Surprise birthday trip to celebrate my birthday, but what do I wear?

Olive colouring, 5ft 2, size 6 bottoms/8-10 top/dress. Don’t like ditsy or animal prints. Size 3.5/4 shoes.

I want to feel stylish.

Happy with cost effective Vinted.

A bit panicked, too much choice and hopeless at putting outfits together.

Heeeelp me please!

I'm from Liverpool and I agree that the style is to look much more glam than you might expect, even in a high-end restaurant. I would definitely wear a dress if going out for a meal. I don't think it's an age or class thing (younger women might be more likely to wear something from a fast fashion retailer though).

In contrast, I stopped off for an expensive meal in Chester on my way back from a conference recently and didn't feel out of place in my work clothes.

Goodness me, what has happened to S&B?

This thread gets wider, which city, which hotel, how am I arriving, how old am I (not telling as I don’t want a Roman or Bon Marche dress 😆) …getting jumped on for not posting enough information about ‘where’ when in fact I had. The poster questioned me and didn’t even come back and help…

I just want style advice as per the topic.🤷🏻‍♀️

Would be nice if you respond to us that are trying in case we are going the wrong way then we can give you better suggestions

HardFuckingBird · 15/04/2026 17:35

In terms of brands to search on Vinted - Rixo, Sezane, Kemi Telford, Me&Em, Moloh, Lisou, Sister Jane, Saloni, Erdem, and Serena Bute are all in my saved searches and might turn up something suitable.

I know it's not trendy but I go to a lot of formal events in my role as a charity trustee and I would look at Monsoon if I wanted something that was "safe" rather than contemporary or interesting.

I'm 5'3" and an 8-10 and I do sometimes find Me&Em stuff too long!

Can you post the vinted options links please?

I don’t think I can link from the app and there are 106 dresses/skirts.

Just put the brand in the search bar and then filter for your size.

Maybe Chester is a style vacuum ...?!! (Sorry, anyone from Chester!)

You're getting tetchy!

Which brand??? The poster isn't asking how to search on Vinted, she's asking you to post links to the ones you've seen that are maybes to get an idea of where you're going?

I have!
Justine Tabak dress was too wintery, though gorgeous fabric and I do wear that style, apart from I don’t like the neckline.

I said the All Saints dress is fantastic.

I commented on another suggestion that bias cut does not suit me.

Give me chance to look at the others and update.

I work with a woman who always looks really stylish snd well put together. I've been trying to emulate her but failed as i just look messy in whatever i wear. The last few times I've seen her she was wearing:
A long black jersey dress with long sleeves with some unusual cream trainers and modern, crisp silver necklace and earrings.
A navy sweatshirt type dress with smart black trainers and matching silver jewelery
I think she buys more expensive things than i would, probably Cos, Arket type things. She looks amazing!

Absolutely not! I was trying to help another poster but genuinely don’t know how to link from the app….

I’m not buying Justine Tabak from Vinted, I thought the PP requesting links wanted to though. @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain? Apologies if I have misunderstood her request.

OP - if you're olive colouring, do you like wearing red? This is full price on Whistles, in their petite range - but is a very versatile dress. And would easily allow for your slightly different top & bottom half sizing?

https://www.whistles.com/product/panel-linen-blend-dress-41126.html

Yes, I would wear red, though atm I am wearing much more sludgy colours.

I ordered that Whistles dress, in black, for a recent funeral, but it was huge on, so I sent it back.

Already acknowledged I missed the hotel part (they do have them in Milan). It's a general frustration in my part at the lack of info in OPs on S&B

🤯

@OP I would look for designer black cigarette trousers on Vinted, I have two pairs (one Gucci, one Etro) and they instantly look very stylish. Then pair with a glam top - maybe a sleeveless cashmere, or something sequinny, or a Missoni fine knit. I got a 16Arlington x M&S top on Vinted, BNWT, for £25 (down from £130).

If you prefer a dress, there are lots of Tory Burch, Sandro, Joseph, Maje dresses on Vinted that would fit the bill.

I too had an extensive saved list, gathered from reading on here and trips to stores. Unfortunately it has disappeared.

This really helps. I had remembered brands such as Aspiga, Anthropology, Sandro, but not others.

Do you normally have to get dresses etc altered if they're from standard ranges? As that's why I'd started with a look through a specific petite range.

EleanorMc67 · 15/04/2026 17:51

Also, don't limit yourself to saved searches in Vinted - also save them in eBay & Vestiaire Collective.

No, not usually and don’t buy petite either.

I suppose I get to know what I can buy in labels. For instance Whistles just seem to be cut large, Rixo are usually very long, Reiss I can never work out the sizes at all.

I keep a running note in my phone of brands I like & particular pieces to save searches for. Sounds a bit regimented, but I've found lots of things that were out of my size/price range that way, often within a few weeks or months.

So you bought that dress in regular not petite?

Maybe you should try again, as trying petite might make all the difference? Because you are very definitely petite, both height & dress size-wise?

Koulibiak · 15/04/2026 18:14

Also if you like the Allsaints look, have a look at Helmut Lang on Vinted, lots of draped styles that look chic but with a bit of an edge

EleanorMc67 · 15/04/2026 18:14

Do you wear slip dresses/sleeveless dresses if they're not bias cut? As this French navy slip dress from Me + Em is on Vinted. It's cut more loosely on the body.

Can't find it on Me + Em anymore as it's a couple of years old - but more details here. However, those loafers she's wearing are bloody awful with it!
