Birkenstocks sizing

I am about to order my first pair! I am average size width wise maybe slightly wide. I am a size 4 but website seems to just have 3.5 or 4.5 in all styles. I heard they run big, should I size down slightly? I have a small bunion, I'm hoping they will be comfortable for hols

I thought I had wasted my money, they gave me blisters to begin with. I wouldn’t size down in your situation.

However once I had worn them in they are super comfortable and wore them all last summer and worth the first few outings!

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 11/04/2026 22:51

I’m a size 7 and always buy a 7. I buy the normal width and have slightly wide feet.

pinkpony88 · 11/04/2026 22:53

I am a 4 and buy a 4 in regular width if that helps.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 11/04/2026 22:55

I am a size 7 and buy a 39 which is a 5.5

Blueeberry · 11/04/2026 22:56

I’m a 7 and ended up having to buy a 5! They run really big in my opinion

notnorman · 11/04/2026 22:57

Im a 6 and I’ve bought 39 and 40 in the past. Think my current are 39 and they’re good fit

PauliesWalnuts · 11/04/2026 22:59

They size a bit big for me. I’m a 9 (!) and wear an 8 in Birkies.

barkygoldie · 11/04/2026 23:01

I wear a 40 in them, when in other shoe brands I’d more often be a 41. Also have bunions. I think you have to try them to find out.

Myfridgeiscool · 11/04/2026 23:02

I’m size 4. I’ve been buying size 37 Birkenstock for years. Live in them all Summer.

Marble10 · 11/04/2026 23:04

I also sized down. They are comfortable for bunions as they are very wide, my dr recommended them for me. You may need to order a couple of pairs to find your perfect fit

RosesAndHellebores · 11/04/2026 23:05

I am a 5. A Birkie 38 is too big; a 37 is too small. I suspect they just aren't the right shape for my foot. They hurt in the shop.

Travelfairy · 11/04/2026 23:05

I think ill try the 37.....no local shops stock them so I think I'll order online and hope for the best!

Im a 5 in their trainers but 4s in their boots and London shearing. I dont have any sandals.

Trampoline · 11/04/2026 23:07

I'm a 6.5 and bought a 40 - didn't find them particularly large, perhaps it depends which style. I don't find them comfortable though! (I have the Arizona)

Forgot to say Im normally a 4 in other shoes, but incredibly wide feet, impossibly wide. Wide fit doesnt cut it for me.

Travelfairy · 11/04/2026 23:08

Did you all get strapless at back or ones with strap behind heel?

OP posts:
OopsieeDaisy · 11/04/2026 23:39

I’m usually a 5/5.5 and I wear a 5 in their Arizonas. The size guide suggested I’d need a 6 and whilst I think they’d be more comfortable, they looked like boats when I tried them on!

Executrixnotextraordinaire · 11/04/2026 23:47

I wear either a 2.5 or a 3 dependent on style, Im a 3 or a 4 in most other brands, Id size down , the ones with the toe indents need to fit well or they really rub. I have the backless clogs and find they’ve stretched quite a bit so slip about, but they are cute.

Travelfairy · 12/04/2026 00:09

I think I might have to drive to somewhere that stocks them! Thanks for all the replies

If you can get them get the soft footbed style, they are comfier and break in a lot faster. As a PP said you may get blisters but worth persevering, wear little and often at first. I love mine, have about 6 pairs in various styles. I find the Arizona (2 wide straps) the comfiest but the only style I can't get on with is the thinner strap over toes only as I walked out of them all the time!

Shinyandnew1 · 12/04/2026 00:35

I am a 5/38 in most other shoes but wear a 37 in Birkenstocks. If you get the plasticky Eva ones though, they seem to be more typical sizing so I’d buy a 38 in those. They are the most comfortable shoes ever. I wear Birkenstocks in the summer and Fly in the winter!

Gemstonebeach · 12/04/2026 00:42

I’m normally a 39 in shoes but take a 38 in Birkenstocks

I have both

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 12/04/2026 07:42

I tend to get suede ones as I can't be doing with breaking the leather ones in.

Petrine · 12/04/2026 10:05

I’m size 3.5 and always order a size 36. I find them true to size. Having said that I always order the Gizeh style so can’t comment on other styles.
