I want to look cool, elegant and pretty! Am dreading the heat and anything synthetic fabric is just going ro be unbearable.

Dont particularly like my upper arms or back showing so strapless/strappy dresses are out and I would prefer a natural fabric in a lighter (but not bridal obvs!) colour.

A little bit sexy would be nice - not talking attention-seeking but not frumpy either. And preferably floaty maxi although wouldn't rule out a midi.

Im a 12/14 and 5'7

I dont know where to start- has anyone seen anything theyd recommend? Budget up to about £200

Farm Rio red

Some of these dresses - especially the maxi dresses with sleeves - are far too much fabric and will be stifling in 40 degrees heat!

The length of the dress & sleeves (& the OP's preference is maxi, with some sort of sleeve), & the amount of fabric, are far less important than the type of material, & whether it's lightweight or not. Also important is whether the dress is lined (to be avoided), or tight/fitted (ditto).

A long loose maxi dress in lightweight cotton gauze, silk charmeuse or a silk/cotton mix - perhaps even a light viscose/viscose blend, will work in high, humid heat even if voluminous.

Fine cotton/viscose/silk mix. https://www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/long-puff-sleeve-dress-riviera/

Everything will be stifling in 40 degree heat.

Aspiga have some lovely maxi dresses https://www.aspiga.com/collections/maxi-length-dresses

Most of them are more day/holiday dress in style. But this one would be great. May not be the OP's colour though, plus the back is cut away & the sleeves very short.

Agreed. But some of these suggestions are ridiculous. I live in a hot country and have been to quite a few summer weddings, at 40 degrees you will be suffering a lot in some of these suggestions! You need something light and floaty, if you won’t do short or no sleeves then 3/4 length is better than full at a push. Linen will crease and silk is too hot. And flattish sandals rather than heels will be more comfortable. And light make up, get stuff that won’t melt or slide off your face. A fan will be useful too.

BleakAF · 13/04/2026 02:56

I'm in Panama at a wedding this week, it's 32 and very humid. My dress is Farm Rio, my flats are Ancient Greek as leather tends to make you sweat less. My deodorant is Secret Gel, I get it from Amazon or the States when I go, there is nothing like it in terms of keeping you dry/smelling nice.

cantgardenintherain · 13/04/2026 03:16

Silk is a ridiculous suggestion for heat. Don’t do it.

keepswimming38 · 13/04/2026 03:29

Naw. A wedding in 40 degree heat. Why would you?

I don't think it's as simple as that, though.

Linen on its own may crease, but blending it with lyocell reduces that greatly while retaining the feel & breathability.

Silk isn't inherently warm - it all depends on the fabric & weave. Habotai or chiffon are extremely light, & even charmeuse is naturally cool in its finish. And silk/cotton mixes are usually light & cool.

Cotton is always referred to as the default fabric for heat - but jersey, twill & gabardine are heavy. The type is what matters - cotton gauzes, organdies & voiles are light & cool.

A long-sleeved kaftan in cotton voile or Habotai silk will be far cooler in a hot, humid climate than a sleeveless fitted cotton gabardine shirtdress.

EleanorMc67 · 13/04/2026 04:02

OP - this dress is simple, but loose & floaty in a linen/lyocell blend. It's a lovely colour (though not pale), & could look dramatic & elegant with great accessories. Maybe fine gold chains & earrings, with clashing hot pink/orange bag/footwear?

This really simple fine viscose kaftan dress from H&M could also work with the right accessories.

These could also be good? It says they're a silk-like fabric, but lists them as 100% cotton - so I think from that & the images they might be cotton organdy? Which would be great in heat.

I would prioritise a parasol

Actually that's a lie. I wouldn't be going!

I too would be RSVP’ing no.

If this isn’t all taking place in a/c, what a selfish couple!

MauriceTheMussel · 13/04/2026 04:41

OP, please report back what the bride wore because Sweet Jesus, how she won’t be uncomfortable, I have no idea

You may be right, I am not a fabric expert. I am just going by personal experience of what I generally wear when it’s 40 degrees here. Linen is comfortable and I often wear it to work on hot days, but it crumples, although maybe I just haven’t bought non crumpling linen. Same with silk, maybe I am missing out but I can’t imagine wearing it in 40 degrees, and I love the heat!

awfulapril · 13/04/2026 05:42

It was 30° at my son's in the uk.

id say floaty. Whatever fabric.

AEIOYOU · 12/04/2026 11:09

Why are people suggesting silk for a 40 degree wedding? It will be so horribly sweaty and warm and will absolutely show every sweat droplet.

Hard disagree, floaty silk is the perfect fabric for hot weather - its breathable and any sweat that goes on dries out in moments

The Boden one is really nice.

Yes I want one myself 😍everyone wore a lot of smart kaftans when I lived abroad. We could never stand anything tight fitting.
