Where to find swimsuits for teens?

Latenightpostings · 09/04/2026 23:52

My 13 year old is adult size 12, but she's not into adult shape swimsuits.

She doesn't want low plunging necklines or high legs.

Does anyone know where to get swimsuits in adult sizes that aren't too adult? We're after colourful and fun swimsuits - but ideally not costing the earth!

Wow that's shocking. I swim 2-3 times a week (probs not in the water as long as your DD!) and my Speedo costume will last for a year as a rule.

I would be complaining to Speedo about that.

Edited

I agree about the poor quality of Speedo. Very quickly broken white fibres appear through the togs. Fabric sags and fades. I only buy Funkita/Funky Trunks or Arena for my swimmers now.

Have a look at next as a girls age 16yrs is an adults size 12. Plenty of choice on there

I wasn’t suggesting she was a club swimmer but the Arena ones are what the young teens are wearing at the swimming club. So presumably they are considered appropriate for that age group. I have found Arena doesn’t fade too badly with a lot of wear.

I don't mean to suggest they are inappropriate in any way, sorry if that's how it read. And I know this style is popular as I used to swim regularly at a session immediately preceded by a club session of teen boys and girls. But I don't think a swimsuit like the one I am uploading is what @Latenightpostings's DD wants?

See I think those Arena ones and the Funkita ones mentioned are rather revealing. I know that club swimmers like that style (it’s not clear if @Latenightpostings’ DD is a club swimmer?) presumably bc they are all super fit and slim and the costume is minimal, but I suspect from the OP’s posts their DD wants something that is more than a front of a costume with tiny string straps across the back. The Funkita colours and patterns are great tho.

Do the Arena ones wear well? I cannot get over the fading on the Speedo one pictured earlier Shock

Funkita do different styles. I have a competitive swimmer who won't wear lace back or high cut, and she has worn loads of Funkita togs over the years. Arena also do a variety of backs - lightdrop back definitely aren't revealing.

Yes, I think DD would find these too revealing.

DD is tall and an early developer - she takes after me. She's 5'7 already at 13.

She's curvy i.e. busty and has full hips - she's the shape of an adult woman not a typical young teen.

Her body is changing quickly, but she doesn't feel comfortable in skimpy / sexy things.

I remember being the same at her age. It was around 13 that I first noticed creepy men ogling me and I hated it. I felt much more comfortable hiding in baggy clothes. If you have big boobs and you wear a swimsuit (or any top) designed to make them look sexy, it makes you look especially, obviously busty if you have larger boobs.

I can totally appreciate that DD doesn't feel ready for that yet. She might look like a 16 year old, but she's not, she's only 13.

She's always liked colourful swimsuits or ones with funky patterns. She doesn't seem to have grown out of that yet, it's just much harder to find that kind of stuff in her size now, except for beautiful swimwear that costs more than I really want to spend!

Yes mine also wears Funkita, but they are very expensive. I'm surprised by people raving about Speedo costumes, we had Speedo for a while but our daughter does swim training twice a week and the colours on the Speedo costumes fade rapidly and the fibres snap so they go threadbare in places, they were barely lasting 2 or 3 months in our house. I took a photo of new versus old (max 3.5 months) costume in identical design.

Wow, I'm really surprised about this! Thanks for the heads up.

I meant to say the pic I posted was the Arena block colour team suit mentioned by a PP. The brand may do suits with more coverage so might be worth a look.

Latenightpostings · 11/04/2026 17:18

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

I have family visiting this weekend so haven't had time to have a sit down and go through them, but once I get a decent moment to myself I will!

In slight defence of Speedo (no I am not employed by them! but I have swum for fitness for many years and I have found them the best) this is my current swimmy which according to the website I bought in March 2024! that's longer ago than I thought. I have just bought a new one but tbh I think this one is still OK and not that faded nor is it losing its elasticity too much. I swim 2-3 times most weeks for about 30-40 minutes. So nothing like a club swimmer's time in the pool but not such a small amount. A costume normally lasts me about a year or so. (obvs I don't have a new costume to compare this one to!)

Supermarkets. My favourite swimsuit ever came from Asda, not high leg or low cut, pink with stripes. Look on their websites - George, Tu etc

clary · 11/04/2026 17:28

Actually here is my current one on the website – not too faded now?

My tall 12yo DD and I both wear Amanzi or Arena Kneesuits. Modest, no worry about bikini line, good for serious swimming or splashing about, good quality, great range of colours.
I’ll try to post a link (but I’m shit at that)

FoxLoxInSox · 11/04/2026 17:36

This is what I mean (and there’s thousands of colour ways / patterns / prints). There’s 10% off first orders on the Allens website too.

Look at decathlon Women's Swimming Costumes & Swimsuits | Decathlon https://share.google/lQ7mnDHiBQvLDAFmg

FionnulaTheCooler · 11/04/2026 17:46

I get my DD the slazenger ones from Sports Direct with the shorts style lower half as she also dislikes a high bikini line and the feeling that it gives you a wedgie as you're walking up the stairs to the flume. A word of warning though, make sure you take her with you to a larger store with fitting rooms as they're very awkward about taking things back if the size isn't right.

Photobot · 11/04/2026 19:48

She sounds about the same size as 12yo DD, a swimmer who is very tall (she's maybe more of a 10) and you are right the kids speedo won't fit well. I'm a tall swimmer as well and I don't think Speedo are great for taller women. I use Zoggs or Arena for preference. I have to go up 2 sizes in Speedo for the length as does DD.

I'm not icked by vinted (we get through a lot of swimwear in this house) but you can usually get end of line reduced quite a lot of you're not too fussy on design. Decathlon is also fine but the sizing is tiny, again have to go up a lot.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 11/04/2026 19:54

I get my DDs swimwear in Sport Direct. The ones I get my 14yo are like shorts around the legs. They do a navy and black. There’s other swimming costumes, but some have splashes of colour. My DDs didn’t like those ones.

You want:

  • A bra-fitted bikini from somewhere like Bravissimo for the proper support and fit. A bikini will dry quickly so you need only one.
  • A couple of cheap rash tops (or those vests in wicking fabric that you get from the gym section of Primark) and surf (or 2" running) shorts to pop over the top for coverage.
  • Woolite and a bra bag (for the bikini top) for washing them as soon as you get home from the pool on the delicates cycle.

I was an early developer too and I remember the pervy paedophile men. If your pool offers women-only sessions, take her to them as they are so liberating.

Salyexley · 13/04/2026 14:14

As I kid learning to swim aged 10 I had high legs, in 80s we didn't care if a dodgy adult was gonna perv on us, what do you expect her to wear? A burkini?

In the 80s, I was told by the responsible adult to stop floating on my back in the pool because a man was following me around the pool staring at my proto-tits. We absolutely cared if dodgy men (not "adults", women don't do this) were perving on teen and pre-teen girls.

ZiggyZowie · 13/04/2026 15:36

I got several tankini sets from Amazon, they have bottoms that look a bit like shorts and are good for coverage and very good prices ,under £20.
You can also return items easily if not liked.

Cla1981ire · 13/04/2026 15:58

I'd definitely recommend shein or Temu, they're fantastic for girls/ladies swimsuits and very cost effective too. I have bought many from both websites and they wash up and wear very well 👌

PoachedSmoke · 13/04/2026 16:08

Asda OP! Get to a big Asda with a large George at Asda section or look online. The sizing is quite big but a size 10 or 12 in the ladies range should do it. They have lovely coloured sensible well cut swimmers.

I swim 4 times a week and my Asda ones last years! Most are lined and they wash and dry very well indeed. The last one I bought was £12.
