Is there a shampoo that works for itchy, flaky scalp or dandruff? Ideally similar to T-gel which is no longer available

I've got a really itchy, flaky scalp. I used to use Neutrogena T-gel which is the only thing that worked for me. Unfortunately it's no longer sold in the UK. Can anyone on MN recommend an alternative?

I use aveeno apple cider shampoo and that has solved itching

I don't use that but I do use the Aveeno oat milk conditioner for iritated scalp alongside the Vichy Dercos and the combination has totally sorted my lifelong problem.

Vichy Dercos seems to work really well for me. You also need to do a scalp pre-treatment like the Inkey List salicylic acid to get the flakes loosened from your scalp so the shampoo can wash them out.

Lush shampoo bar soak and float. My dad swore by it

I’ve seen T gel shampoo in most supermarkets..

Yes my DH uses it regularly. Has it changed its formula or something? I think last time we bought it it had different types (eg dry hair etc) and it wasn't clear which was the "original" version.

Have you been to the GP? I caught some nasty fungal scalp thing from dirty hairdresser combs (yuck) and needed an anti fungal topical prescription plus nizoral shampoo which cleared it up completely. But yes T-Gel is still in Home Bargains.

@CatConcernsmy husband had the same issue with T gel. He has psoriasis and used that one they have discontinued all the time. Instead he has been using my body shop ginger shampoo and has said it's relieved a lot of the itching on his scalp. I've been using the ginger shampoo for years, my hairdresser recommended it as my scalp was starting to get flaky and have not had any issues since

My scalp is very dry and flakes and gets itchy crusty sores with some perfumed shampoo. Delightful.

I'm now a fan of E45 shampoo which i buy from amazon. By keeping my scalp healthy I only need to shampoo twice a week.

Coal tar shampoo

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 09/04/2026 10:14

T-Gel is still available but it has been reformulated. The new formula contains salicylic acid. What OP wants is something containing the old active ingredient of coal tar. I've been through this process as coal tar is the only thing which keeps my scalp psoriasis under control.

OP, you need Polytar, Alphosyl, Psoriderm (get the shampoo, not the cream) or, my preference, Capasal.

Another vote for MooGoo. I thought it was expensive at £12 but it's a huge bottle and it left my hair looking incredible and feeling really soft and shiny.

This works really well.

Capasal Coal tar shampoo

Nizoral seems to be doing the job for me.

Itsanewnameeveryday · 11/04/2026 13:13

MooGoo is fantastic, I had an itchy scalp for years and it totally cleared up.

I tried the SeaMagik range , it was okay but not something I'd re purchase . The salt granuals in the scrub didn't get anywhere near my scalp but at least they dissolved .

Unlike the BodyShop Ginger scrub which matted my hair and the granules were a blighter to rinse out . I buy the shampoo/conditioner for anyone who wants to use it , Mainly DH but I occasionally do.
I find if I go too long without washing my hair it makes my scalp really sore . Not itching but like someone is pricking my scalp with needles .

I cannot use coconut oil on my scalp , it gives me irritated scabby areas Blush

I read they've discontinued the tar version due to lawsuits regarding one of the ingredients being carcinogenic. I bought the Salicylic Acid one a couple of times by accident as they made the packaging look like it was the tar version.

I've bought Polytar from Amazon a few times and I'm happy with it.
