Is there a shampoo that works for itchy, flaky scalp or dandruff? Ideally similar to T-gel which is no longer available

I've got a really itchy, flaky scalp. I used to use Neutrogena T-gel which is the only thing that worked for me. Unfortunately it's no longer sold in the UK. Can anyone on MN recommend an alternative?

Have you tried the Head and Shoulders Derma range? It comes in a variety of types (sensitive scalp, dry scalp etc, hydration etc). It’s worked wonders for my dry scalp. It comes in a blue bottle with a bronze coloured lid.

My friend likes MooGoo.

LasVegass · 06/04/2026 15:47

DD uses Dercos

I use T Gel occasionally, I buy it off Amazon.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 06/04/2026 15:51

I saw t gel last week in Home Bargains

Polytar has the same active ingredient (coal tar). You can get it from amazon or in chemists.

Derma X. It's a little bit more expensive than H&S etc but it's really gentle. It helped the itching within a couple of washes.

T-gel Scalp relief also helps and you can get it on Amazon.

We use vosene.

The Bodyshop does a ginger shampoo, that is good for an itchy scalp, according to members of my family.

Sainsbury's sells three different versions of T-Gel, my husband uses them. There's the original, one with conditioner and a sensitive shampoo.

I got T-Gel in Tesco recently.

BlessedAreThePureOfHeart · 06/04/2026 16:12

Boots have got 5 different types of T-gel for sale

LastHotel · 06/04/2026 16:15

I bought T-gel only a month ago.

My flakes are like powder so it dry scalp rather than dandruff . I use shampoo with hyluronic acid, L’Oréal purple bottle.
It’s not as damaging to my highlights as the medicated ones. I haven’t found one that has totally worked so am watching with interest.

Nizoral works for me. Get the one from behind the counter to clear a build up, then they also do more frequent use products.

I remember Selsun used to work quite well for me too.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 06/04/2026 16:27

Nizoral

@CatConcerns as PP have said, Sainsbury's sell it. There was a period of a few weeks where they didn't have any in stock (don't know why) but it's now back. I bought some just last week.

I used to have this problem which turned out to be an allergy to some chemical/s in commercial shampoo. Largely solved by using an Aleppo soap with a high proportion of laurel oil in it.

I have a hereditary dry skin condition and have had an itchy flaky scalp all my life. I find that using Eucerin Dermo Capillaire shampoo and scalp treatment in combination keeps it at bay most of the time.

Regarding T-gel - there's a specific formulation of it which is no longer available. That's the one I was using. It's the one mentioned in this link: https://www.psoriasis-association.org.uk/news/neutrogena-t-gel-shampoo-discontinued

There are other formulations e.g. T-gel Scalp Relief, but they have different ingredients and aren't as strong. The one in the article is the one I was using - I haven't seen it in any shops (or being sold anywhere online) since early last year.

Neutrogena® T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo – Discontinued

The Psoriasis Association were informed in early April that Neutrogena® T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo has now been discontinued and is no longer available in the UK and Ireland.

Yeah exactly. I just saw T-Gel in my Tesco Extra just this past Wednesday. @CatConcerns double check your supermarket sources before putting your scalp though hell trying to find another shampoo that works.

Actually, @CatConcerns you know what? You’re right. My husband was using for years and last year I even told him about the plans to discontinue it. I think that’s why I was surprised to see the box in Tesco but’s the Scalp Relief version. Sorry to doubt you. 🙂
