Is there a shampoo that works for itchy, flaky scalp or dandruff? Ideally similar to T-gel which is no longer available

I've got a really itchy, flaky scalp. I used to use Neutrogena T-gel which is the only thing that worked for me. Unfortunately it's no longer sold in the UK. Can anyone on MN recommend an alternative?

T gel is still available in b&m?

Caterina99 · 06/04/2026 17:49

I swapped to a different t gel (it’s kind of clear colour) and it works ok for me

Philip Kingsley flaky itchy scalp shampoo completely cleared up my OH’s. It’s pricey but you can get small sample sizes on eBay. It worked miracles.

Why is tgel not available?
DS likes the body shop ginger shampoo range

I had an itchy, flaky scalp for years. It was horrible, and at one point also built up into dry crusts. Apologies for the gross detail, but it was bad.

And now? It’s completely gone! The cure was simply a good quality shampoo without SLS. I use Cantu because I have curly hair but there are plenty more. To anyone reading this and suffering, do give it a try. It truly was a miracle for me. I’d never have guessed that was the issue.

We use body shop ginger shampoo and found it to be really effective

If your scalp is really flaky or itchy with visible dandruff, shampoos with antifungal or exfoliating actives (like ketoconazole, pyrithione zinc, or salicylic acid) tend to help the most. If the itch is more from dry scalp, a gentler, fragrance-free cleanser and good scalp hydration can make a big difference before jumping straight to medicated products.

Nizerol.

I find the Neutrogena 2in1 shampoo and conditioner brilliant. Used to use Philip Kingsley but it was so pricey.

Hesma · 06/04/2026 19:51

@CatConcerns I bought T gel in the supermarket just last week… it is still available 🥳

Happiestathome · 06/04/2026 19:56

I have found polytar to be a really good replacement. Bit pricey but I actually think it’s better than t-gel was for me.

Clowningaroun · 06/04/2026 19:59

I use Nizoral which I found much more effective than t-gel

StrongTeaDropOfMilkNoSugar · 06/04/2026 20:02

Capasal shampoo. Its normally on prescription, but if you ask at the pharmacy you can buy it over the counter.

Happytaytos · 06/04/2026 20:06

Don't use moogoo, but one of the worst things I've used. All my hair fell out. Poured away ££££ of it.

IDontHateRainbows · 06/04/2026 20:16

Body Shop Ginger Shampoo. Although T gel is still available (but this is better)

Minihippyme89 · 06/04/2026 20:37

are there any shampoos that work as well as tgel that don’t strip any hair dye away? I can’t use head and shoulders, makes my head worse

marginallyawake · 06/04/2026 20:39

Sea Magik mineral shampoo. It has salicylic acid.

Regarding T-gel - there's a specific formulation of it which is no longer available. That's the one I was using. It's the one mentioned in this link: https://www.psoriasis-association.org.uk/news/neutrogena-t-gel-shampoo-discontinued

There are other formulations e.g. T-gel Scalp Relief, but they have different ingredients and aren't as strong. The one in the article is the one I was using - I haven't seen it in any shops (or being sold anywhere online) since early last year.

I used this exact one for years but Vichy Dercos is even better. It’s amazing.

For the soothing aspect garnier have an oat’s shampoo, it’s a white bottle with a pink top. Didn’t stop the flakes but my head was bleeding and it soothed scalp and allowed cuts to clear. Did dry out hair to be honest so have to alternate between that and the blue herbal essence which gets my hair back to normal before scalp goes south again!!

OhcantthInkofaname · 07/04/2026 23:46

Amazon has a generic version of t-gel.

Millindugu · 07/04/2026 23:50

Nizoral is the only thing that works for me. It’s about £7-8 for a tiny 4/5 wash bottle but it’s anti fungal and makes me feel normal

spiderlight · 08/04/2026 00:09

You can still get the brown T-gel shampoo on eBay. It's the only thing that works for my DH's scalp - he's tried most of not all of the alternatives mentioned above.

SnowFrogJelly · 08/04/2026 00:22

I’ve seen T gel shampoo in most supermarkets..

Vanillabourbon · 08/04/2026 07:13

I have recently discovered Osmo scalp Therapy and found this really good.

firstofallimadelight · 08/04/2026 07:15

I use aveeno apple cider shampoo and that has solved itching
