What am I doing wrong? (Redness on face - pic included)

These are my cheeks - with foundation on.
I use Liz Earle face wash, No7 serum, No7 moisturiser. Sometimes use a primer (Rimmel) and always Revlon Colourstay foundation.
But I then have to put concealer (Rimmel Hide the Blemish stick) across nearly the whole of my face - cheeks, nose, chin, forehead - to get rid of the redness. Even then, I still don't look flawless. It drives me crazy - plus is time consuming and expensive. To top it all, I think Rimmel are stopping making the concealer so I definitely need alternatives!

FYI Im 46, perimenopausal and have always had rubbish (spotty/ blemishy / red) skin on my face. It's affecting my confidence and self esteem now. Please can anyone help?
Thank you.

Too many products. Try a simple cleanser and La Roche Posay moisturiser.

@ItalianChineseIndianMexican I went to buy the erborian green cream but could only find the big one at £38! I bought the L'Oréal 24 hour green primer and the Nivea SPF mattifying cream.

Nivea first, then L'Oréal and its made such a difference 😊

I disguise redness with Rosalique, applied SPARINGLY. Build it up where you need it. I leave it 5 or 10 minutes (or longer) after moisturiser, apply a skim of primer and then the Rosalique. I hope you get a solution that suits you!

Get a tester if you want to try it as it turns me orange !

Maybe that's Donald Trump's problem!

This looks like it could be rosacea.

Perhaps look and see if you can get some Skinoren which is azelaic acid. I don't live in the UK, and we can buy it over the counter, but I believe some places need a prescription. It is not a short term thing though, it can take more than a month to see a difference. Start slow like three times a week.

And perhaps scale back to the most basic skincare. Gentle wash, maybe like Cetaphil. Bioderma have a range for rosacea prone skin, Sensiblo AR. Avene and LRP also have nice ranges.

Also Colourstay is quite a thicker texture foundation, so perhaps try something lighter, like a skin tint. You can layer these to give better coverage. I swear by Revlon Illuminance. I am very eczema prone so when I find something that works I stick with it.

i tried azelaic acid but actually found it made it worse.

Some of the azelaic acid that are sold on the shelves, have a mix of other acids in as well. Like niacinamide which many people react to.

The pure 15-20% cream/gel is way less harsh as it doesn't have other additives mixed in. But it might be on prescription only in UK.

Elanol · 09/04/2026 13:46

Try products that contain salicylic acid. That usually works well for me.

I use Clean and Clear that you can get in Boots and Superdrug. It's £3-4, sometimes it's on offer. The Ordinary also have a product but I haven't tried it.

Interesting to hear about the Liz Earle products, I always thought they would be 'kind to skin' but seems like they may be part of the problem...!

I really wanted Liz Earle cleanse and polish to work for me - it smells gorgeous - but it made my skin redder and redder. It's an expensive and costly exercise trying to find out what products are ok for the skin!

My advice would be to go straight to the products which are formulated for very sensitive and reactive skin. Both La Roche Posay and Avene are great brands to start from.

So bizarre - and unexpected! But yes, I'm going to stop using the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish. Such a shame.

Could I hijack this thread slightly to ask if anyone can suggest a facial oil suitable for sensitive, roseacea skin? A few days a month my skin is very dry and needs this. Thanks so much.

Estee Lauder advanced night repair serum is amazing, pricey but the Revolution version is pretty much exactly the same. I'd steer clear of oils.

BunfightBetty · 14/04/2026 17:38

I have rosacea and a lot of sensitivity, and I find rosehip oil really good - very moisturising and plumping, plus calming too.

Is there a particular brand you’d recommend please?

Trilogy is great, but a bit pricey. It sometimes pops up in TK Maxx though. The Ordinary do a 100% rosehip oil too, but I haven't tried it.

Jemimapuddleduk · 15/04/2026 09:35

Soolantra from an online pharmacy sorted my redness out. I’ve had to go really gentle with face products- I use weleda cleansing balm and Kate Somerville goats milk face wash.

Torchout · 15/04/2026 13:43

It looks like a damaged skin barrier. For a week or so just wash your face with water. Don't put on make up either. If it calms gradually introduce one thing, like a cleanser specifically for damaged skin barriers. If this doesn't help see if you can get an antimicrobial as its the main cause of rosacea

ilovebrie8 · 15/04/2026 16:18

What is an antimicrobial? And how do you get it? Thanks

Soolantra (ivermectin cream). By prescription from a GP, a dermatologist or an online pharmacy.

WearyLeader · 15/04/2026 17:44

I’ve always just used water and the cheapest, plainest Oil of Olay with a little spf. And no makeup. Your skin knows what it is doing and will heal if you just leave it alone. Fancy products upset it. Capitalism sells us solutions to made up problems.

Rosacea isn't a made up problem and was first noted in the 1300s.
