What am I doing wrong? (Redness on face - pic included)

These are my cheeks - with foundation on.
I use Liz Earle face wash, No7 serum, No7 moisturiser. Sometimes use a primer (Rimmel) and always Revlon Colourstay foundation.
But I then have to put concealer (Rimmel Hide the Blemish stick) across nearly the whole of my face - cheeks, nose, chin, forehead - to get rid of the redness. Even then, I still don't look flawless. It drives me crazy - plus is time consuming and expensive. To top it all, I think Rimmel are stopping making the concealer so I definitely need alternatives!

FYI Im 46, perimenopausal and have always had rubbish (spotty/ blemishy / red) skin on my face. It's affecting my confidence and self esteem now. Please can anyone help?
Thank you.

@professionalhomebody Does this stay on all day? I've been looking at it but scared to pay money on something that glides off my face like everything else 😊

It does, and I have hot flushes. I’ve never had more compliments on my skin. It’s a bit pricey for me but it’s worth it.

VividDeer · 06/04/2026 10:14

No 7 serums / creams gave me big problems (peri oral dermatitis)

Thankyou. I'm happy to pay it if I know it works 😊

Do you just use that or do you use anything else?

I use weleda skin food as moisturiser, Cosrx Soothing Sun Cream SPF50 Aloe on top of that. Then the erborian, then a rare beauty liquid blush. No powder or setting sprays or primer.

Have a watch of this video.

MayaPinion · 06/04/2026 10:27

You have rosacea. I got Soolantra (online prescription- about £40) and it cleared it up over the space of a month or so.

Binfire · 05/04/2026 11:41

I have a lot of redness too and have to be very careful with cleansers as often they’re too harsh.
I use this CC cream from L’Oréal which covers a lot of the redness, it works really well and is often on 3 for 2 in Superdrug. I find I don’t need a foundation or concealer with it, my skin looks great once I’m wearing it. I haven’t used foundation in months!

Same!

RAA2026 · 06/04/2026 10:52

As someone up thread mentioned, if you want something to give you instant colour correction, Dr Jart 'cicapair' works immediately.
You apply the green cream to the red area, blend it in and it turns to a natural colour on your face and it conceals the redness.
Wait a few minutes and apply your foundation as normal.

StasisMom · 06/04/2026 11:06

Ps re the L’Oréal CC cream, for me it doesn’t entirely cover the redness, it’s more it stops the individual veins being visible and gives me more of a healthy glow. And I save money on blusher 😶.

2026onwardsandup · 06/04/2026 11:06

I hope you get it sorted out . I don’t have rosacea but do get red inflamed skin from time to time .
Just to flag up that I actually found la Roche posay (sp?) products irritated my skin when I used them a few years ago . But I didn’t use the redness one .
When I was in boots last year , it was one of the staff there who recommended the Dr Jart moisturisers and I have found it to be really good for my dry skin .

MrsAnon6 · 06/04/2026 11:10

Niacinamide serum is supposed to be good for redness.

oneoneone · 06/04/2026 11:14

Before you start taking lots of recommendations and spending money on products that might or might not work, I'd try a GP or online pharmacy where you upload photos. I agree with the others that it looks like rosacea and you're best off trying to tackle it at the root rather than soothe it because you could very easily end up with a cupboard full of products that do more harm than good. I had great results with Soolantra - it cleared it up entirely and almost never need to use it now.

namethisbird · 06/04/2026 11:18

That is rosacea.
I would see a dermatologist or access a dermatology subscription service and start using skin care that helps calm it down as there is no cure but good diet and a meticulous skin regime will help.

PP have already offered some great suggestions but Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid are good for treating rosacea. You may also be prescribed a cream with metronidazole in the formulation.

A good CC cream (green) is good for before applying foundation. I use the erborian one, it was linked above.

Are Liz Earle and No7 products classed as cheap products??

Will look into La Rosche Posay as have heard they're good.

LRPosay are good. I use some, as do many of my friends. Just a note that some feel the LRP Toleriane range works better than the redness range for calming redness. It's a really good place to start.

Clinique also do an anti-redness range (or at least they used to ...)

MrsBucketHat · 06/04/2026 11:24

As others have said, it looks like rosacea to me. I suffered for years before going to the GP who prescribed soolantra which cleared it up. I’d also drop the Liz Earle and switch to a much gentler formula like La Roche Posay. A good SPF and a big hat in the summer are also essentials for me.

UmberMoose · 06/04/2026 11:47

This seems more like rosacea. I had that so better you see a good derm and clear that first. I had a similar thing and got it cleared and then started a routine. Will share that here as well.
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Cicaplast
Evening:
LRP moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

B242 · 06/04/2026 12:05

I second the erborian cc cream! It’s not cheap, but a little goes a long way! The makeup artist for my wedding turned both me & my mum onto it and it’s honestly like a miracle product! I have rosacea and often just pop a little bit of this on and you can’t tell.

ThatWaryLimePeer · 06/04/2026 12:10

You could be sensitive to some of the products you are using or it may be sun damage. I have redness and I use Nivea products on my face, almond facial wash, day cream and night cream plus occasional mask. Any other products seem to make me redder.
To hide the redness I really recommend No 7 Pro Artist foundation. It’s quite runny, I pour a tiny bit on my hand and then use a large eye shadow brush to literally paint in on my red bits. It blends seamlessly in with my skin. I’ve tried lots of concealers etc in the past and this stuff is like magic plus it stays perfect all day.

Soozikinzii · 06/04/2026 12:25

My husband has extremely sensitive skin and dermatitis - as diagnosed by consultant dermatologist - not just some home google diagnosis ! He has nizoral shampoo prescribed for that to let bubbles go on face as well as scalp . I get him that rosalique which is green but blends in very well.and has a matt finish . It lasts for months because you only need a tiny bit .

Thanks again everyone, some really useful advice on here. Appreciate the support :)

My GP diagnosed rosacea and prescribed Soolantra cream, which has ivermectin as its active ingredient. You can get it privately from one of those online pharmacies but it will cost a lot more than getting it from the NHS. I’ve been told to apply it once daily for three months. I’ve been applying it for 2 weeks so it’s too early to say if it’s working.

dc82 · 06/04/2026 23:06

There is more than one type of rosacea. I’ve type 1, which I’ve had pretty much all my life. Soolantra/ivermectin works much better for type 2, which tends to have a different cause. You can have more than one type at the same time as well. I’ve fixed triggers for bad flares and these are stress, alcohol and sugars. Avoiding these helps but perimenopause make stress unavoidable. Skincare is really key, but I have to avoid niacinamide! It’s a known trigger for some forms of rosacea and will leave my skin a mess and it’s in so many products now - I often see it recommended but it actually can be the worst thing depending on your skin type. Regular red light therapy and azelaic acid in smallish doses work really well for me. I recommend speaking to your gp but ideally a dermatologist really. Erborian cc cream does a fab job for covering up for me too!

ShowDownTime · 06/04/2026 23:43

IPL laser works. Not permanently, it comes back but you get a good 6-12 months

ShowDownTime · 06/04/2026 23:44

i tried azelaic acid but actually found it made it worse.
