Gradual tan

Hi
I'm blonde, fair skinned and have lots of freckles. I've just come back from holiday and have a bit of colour, which I like. Any tips on how to keep the colour? I've been looking at Garnier or Dove daily moisturiser with gradual tan....

The Dove gradual tan is good but be warned that the light/medium is very very subtle. I'm blonde, blue eyed and very fair-skinned and it made no difference at all to my skin, I needed the medium/dark to actually see a change. But you'll be very safe with the light/medium if you're wanting to start carefully.

I like to use tanning drops in my moisturiser (not too thick in consistency), daily until I get the desired colour, then once or twice a week for maintenance. It's easy and streak free. Either Isle of paradise or Bondi Sands.

I’m also very pale and I use the Sienna X gradual tan. I love it and it doesn’t go streaky. I start by doing it 2 days in a row, then every other day and it gives me a nice glow. Then I periodically scrub it off and start afresh.

I caved and bought the gatineau gradual tan after watching so many bloggers promoting it, what a waste of £40 I need a least 3 to 4 layers before I even get a light colour, I'm light skined blue eyes with brown hair.

Another vote for the Dove tanning moisturiser. Also agree that the lighter one is very subtle. I’m blonde/blue eyes/fair skin and use the darker one. Can see the difference after one use. I don’t use it every day though, maybe every other day or every 3 days. Otherwise it’s too much.

I like the bondi sands one.
Consistency is key with gradual tan

Squirrelchops1 · 05/04/2026 15:24

I had a trial of Gatineau gradual tan in my Lookfantastic box and thought it was excellent. No streaks, no nasty colour.

Bondi Sands gradual tan in the blue bottle is the best one I have ever used!

Dove

How do you manage to do your back without missing bits? I am v fair and freckly and I like the colour light gradual tan gives, but I’d love to be able to wear a strappy dress without worrying about patchy bits. Do the long handled mitts work?

GreaterCassowary · 05/04/2026 16:26

@cupidsabsolutepsyche I get my DH to do my back.

liquoriceallsortfamily · 05/04/2026 17:10

Are there any good spray on gradual tans? Xx

Bumblebeeforever · 05/04/2026 18:22

I like the palmers coca butter tanning moisturiser.

Thank you, I’ll give it a try!

I use dove light/medium and it works well for me. I think it probably is light but is more than I’ve ever tanned naturally as I just burn.

Those daily moisturizers with gradual tan can work well. The key is really in how you use them! First, apply a thin even layer every day (or every other day depending on how much color you want to maintain). Since your skin is fair, it’s better to build it slowly rather than applying too much at once. Before applying, make sure your skin is well moisturized & gently exfoliated. Dry patches can grab more color & end up looking patchy (especially on areas like elbows/knees/hands). If your skin stays hydrated the color will look smoother, more even, & fade more nicely instead of going blotchy. Hope this helps!

I got this tan luxe a beauty box and really rate it. Goes on easily, dries quickly and leaves my skin so soft with a nice colour. No biscuit smell either that I tend to get with the dove gradual tan.
