Help me pack for Barcelona?

Going for the weekend. So far I have:

Levis ribcage wide jeans
Pair of casual cotton trousers (black)
mixture of t shirts and vest tops
a white linen shirt
a short silk kimono
pair of shorts (black)
merino zip up hoody in charcoal
pale grey soft fine-knit jumper
leather jacket
Adidas gazelles
Birkenstocks

never been to Barcelona and want to bring layers in case it’s chilly in the evenings, but does this sound ok for some sightseeing (including the cathedral), walking, cafes, the beach, and general soaking up the atmosphere?

Sounds good and like it all matches. What's the weather forecast? I would add hat / raincoat depending on the weather. Are your shoes comfy enough for alot of walking and do you need something dressier for the evening? You could add a smarter top or black dress.

Holdinguphalfthesky · 31/03/2026 08:21

Well, am going with my dd (15) and when I lived in Spain (albeit the north-west, and 20-odd years ago) the vibe was VERY casual except for weddings. I do have a dress I could pop in the bag, but don’t have any other shoes to bring that would be worth their weight (10kg limit).

My trainers and birks are both comfy, was thinking the birks for the long walks to Park Guëll etc and then change to trainers for the evenings. I can pack a raincoat. Oh, and I do have a beautiful shawl.

If you’re doing a hop on hop off bus tour, take a warm jumper. I was bloody frozen this time last year. Had to buy an emergency woollen in Zara. What a disaster 😜🤣

coolcahuna · 31/03/2026 09:23

I think ditch the dress, you can go casual in the evenings. Defo a shawl or pashmina.

It could be quite chilly in Barcelona in April, and it might rain.
Its about 14 degrees atm. To that's definitely not shorts and sandals weather.

(FYI in September when its pretty warm - 20° ive seen many wearing coats!)

I have 2 fine knits, 2 long trousers, a leather jacket and a shawl. But sitting here in UK in the sun with shorts on, so with the sun at August strength I wanted some cooler options. Should I pack a thicker jumper?

forecast to Sunday is sunshine, highs of 18, I know that’s not factoring in wind chill.

I always take a thick jumper to Europe outside of June/July/August- but I do feel the cold!
I'd probably wear it on the plane :)
I use compression packing cubes so that luggage can fit in a smaller space.
Its better to have an extra layer than not enough. Then again shopping in Barcelona is excellent ;) x
(I took 2 jumpers to SE Asia - but that was for wearing indoors in the air conditioning! (Office))

Just make sure you have appropriate means of keeping valuables safe and close to you at all times so no rucksacks or open totes etc. pickpocketing is rife! If you can leave stuff in a safe so much the better.

Eixample · 31/03/2026 14:25

I've been sitting outside in the sun this morning and I had to put my jacket back on. It can be hot in the sun but the second there's a cloud it's too cold. I haven't seen anyone in shorts yet this year outside the gym. It's been very windy too.

Maddy70 · 31/03/2026 15:41

It'll be warm in the day and cold at night this time of year so layers and a jacket are needed. (Cross body bag or bum bag for your phone )

Holdinguphalfthesky · 31/03/2026 19:27

Thanks all! I do have a waist bag, but the zip-up bag I bought on Vinted wasn’t posted till Sunday so I’m not sure it will arrive in time. The two options I have are imperfect (either securely zipped but small, or bucket like but only fastens with a popper . That wouldn’t be for valuables though, more for carrying our layers around!

A bum bag, sorry the pickpockets are rife.

Peony1985 · 31/03/2026 19:41

It’s usually the other way around- hotter than you think.
Barcelona is about a month and half ahead of…think early May temps. Barcelona does get sea fog which is bloody weird but burns off by the afternoon. When the sun is out it’s very warm. In the south today the sun was baking but in shade freezing.
I do light layers. Vest top bottom, slouchy knit, boxy cardigan( long sleeved to tie).

They have chain. charity shops old town - everything 5 euros. Just the coolest Spanish stuff.I take less as an excuse …

Newmeagain · 31/03/2026 19:44

I don’t think you need shorts. It looks like it will be sunny but not hot.

Peony1985 · 31/03/2026 19:55

There used to be of course pick pockets but I’m a complete klutz and never had an issue. Cross body bag, nothing obvious to sneak a hand into. They are opportunistic not hard core.

I read on a blog recently about a young American woman who had her passport taken out of her shirt pocket while photographing La Sagrada. She met up with two other American women one of whom also had her passport taken. They were due to join a cruse ship but were denied boarding even though she had a copy of her passport. Please just be careful.

Spent a few days in Barcelona this time last year. We had some light rain one of the days and it was chilly for the duration of our stay, even in the sun. I layered up with a hoody/jumper under a medium weight jacket, as too cold to wear my lightweight one especially evenings and nights.

Eixample · 01/04/2026 14:32

It’s colder today that yesterday, consider a few layers

Holdinguphalfthesky · 01/04/2026 16:10

I’ve got a quilted jacket as well as the leather. Gloves. 2 fine knit jumpers. Thick socks. Vests, t shirts, and long sleeves (3). As well as shorts 😁 hopefully covering all bases! I’ll report back for anyone else visiting the western Med at Easter.

So, I used both jumpers and both jackets (and my daughter wore on of the jackets as well). Didn’t need gloves, found the shawl useful. Went to the beach and sunbathed, but the wind was cool and I didn’t wear all the vests, or the shorts or the second pair of trousers- although that was more about the jeans working brilliantly for the city and feeling comfortable walking around. I did wear my sandals, to the beach.

It was cool on Wednesday when we arrived, chilly on Thursday evening and then progressively warmer both day times and evenings. Glorious sunshine and of course it’s strong, so sitting in it was very nice indeed- at midday, a bit of shade required.

thanks for all the tips and help, I feel I packed correctly and a day or two earlier or later would have needed to use more warm layers or more of the vests, so it was pretty accurate really.

just sad now to be back and wondering when we can go again!!

This made me laugh as brought back memories of my trip to Barcelona. Did the hop on hop off bus but it was July my skirt was soaked from sweating sitting on the seats luckily it was patterned. And I had to buy a pair of emergency sandals in Zara due to blisters.

Thank god for Zara 😆
