WTF do I wear this summer?

I stubbornly sweated my way through last summer in leggings. Can't do it again.

Late 30s, tall, postpartum aka a bit wibbly in places. Like to shop in Uniqlo, occasional bits from M&S, aspirational Beyond Nine. Wardrobe has a lot of oversized but flatteringly cut styles.

I don't like feeling like I'm wearing "holiday clothes" day to day. So I'm not really into linen, straw hats, floaty summer dresses etc. Also don't iron so I'd look like a crumpled bed sheet.

I noticed Adidas shorts as everyday wear last year, which pleased me as an elderly millennial. Have I missed that boat? I don't particularly follow trends but always really struggle for summer bottoms

What's everyone else wearing?

I like skirts and dresses in summer but not necessarily ‘floaty’ ones. I got a couple I really liked from Mountain Warehouse last year - very practical and don’t need ironing.
My young adult daughter also gets some of her summer workwear from outdoors shops - she’s in a profession where walking shorts are apparently the warm weather norm! 😂

I tend to wear long lightweight trousers with a t shirt or vest. I look terrible in shorts so I only wear them when I'm abroad or if its unbearably hot here.

I don't do shorts either. Tend to spend summer in either wide legged trousers or maxi slip skirts (with chub rub shorts!) and a graphic tee.

I wore a lot of linen culotte type trousers last year

Having said that, I’m not very tall and some were more like cropped iyswim

I wear wide legged cotton trousers, mostly from Next or the thin linen blend easy trousers from Uniqlo with a t shirt tucked in. When it is really hot I wear shorts and my favourites are from Mountain Warehouse of all places. Just plain coloured and lightweight so keeps me cool.

What have you worn in summer before last year? What sort of things do you wear the rest of the year?

Peanutbutteryday · 30/03/2026 10:23

You sound a bit like
me. Mid 30s and post partum. The floaty dresses simply do not suit me. I don’t get how they look good on others. Neither do linen trousers. I also stubbornly made my way through the last few summers in leggings and a nice top. I’m out of options so interested in other suggestions.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/03/2026 10:43

Would cropped trousers which aren’t linen work for you? Just lighter weight cotton trousers rather than clingy leggings can be ok in a lot of uk ‘summer’ weather.

I think that unless you work somewhere with some sort of ‘dress code’, there aren’t so many rules about what to wear in summer versus the other seasons.

FourForksSake · 30/03/2026 11:15

Look for linen mix fabric for wide leg trousers, to avoid the creasing/ironing. Pair with plain T-shirts or vest tops, not too tight.

You need to shop around and try on shorts to find a flattering style. Shorter length ones tend to be more flattering, rather than knee length.

Janey90 · 30/03/2026 11:20

I also like skirts and dresses, but try to avoid the styles with too much material, not sure why so many things could double up as curtains! There are some nice shirt dresses around, which have a neater silhouette

Midi jumper dresses, carrot/balloon jeans, simple tops. But mostly leggings and a sweater tbh.

Interesting to hear about shorter shorts being flattering. Poss not on my legs, horrendous looking knees.
