Crochet top & shorts - Mint Velvet - is this outfit actually wearable?

Hello!

Bit of a long shot but has anyone seen this outfit IRL? The description doesn't mention any lining so I'm wondering how difficult this would be to actually wear. I'm in the US so no chance of going to a store for myself.

Also, any suggestions of what would be a sensible option to wear underneath would be most welcome. I'm 50 this year and don't think I'd get away with a pair of M&S white knick knacks! 😂

TIA!

I’m assuming it’s just something to throw on after swimming or a beach day ?!

BasiliskStare · 29/03/2026 20:14

Just from the photographs - it looks like no lining. So I would say nude coloured smooth ( ie not lacy - the most unobtrusive you can get ) knickers / bra . It looks like there's a fair bit of the more dense crochet around parts you wouldn't want showing 😊

Best I can do I'm afraid but hope it helps. 💐

Overtheatlantic · 29/03/2026 20:18

I love that outfit and would have worn it in the summer after a day at the beach. So, either over a swimsuit or nude knickers.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/03/2026 20:19

It wouldn’t suit me but would suit my SIL who is slim and tall.

MakingTheEndsMeet · 29/03/2026 20:25

It’s knitted not crocheted, and any solid underwear or bikini/swimsuit will be fine under it. The holes are not huge, not much will show, so white if you are feeling demure, or a bright colour if you feel fancy.

superexcitedaboutit · 29/03/2026 20:29

Flesh coloured underwear or something super bright and obvious

Beesandhoney123 · 29/03/2026 23:04

They don't have a pic of the shorts from the back, so you can't see the fit or if you'd need a thong if they are cut high at the back.

Everything would have to be nude, underneath, if not over swimmers.

CalicoCaterina · 30/03/2026 06:01

I don't think it is throw on over swimsuit stuff. More general summer wear on a hot day, out for lunch, nice shopping, walking around on holiday, it doesn't look like it is thin, cool, wafty, throw it on at the beach stuff to me.

I'd wear it with either cream or nude underwear underneath it.

Agree. You can also see from the photos that the shorts are not higher cut at the back.

Nude full coverage plain knickers I think.

If you scroll in you can see the model us wearing a nude bra under the KNITTED top.

I dont think it's a throw on to cover your swimsuit. I think it's an outfit by itself. Wear nude underwear underneath it but know that people will see it or go for a bright contrasting vest/bikini top. Not sure about the bottoms. Big nude granny pants?

I cant help but think the bag is strategically placed to hide the see-throughness of the shorts.

HaveYouHadYourBreak · 30/03/2026 09:03

You can tell it's knitted because
A) there isnt a machine that can crochet so its very unlikely you'll ever get a mass produced completely crochet outfit. The man power especially for fancy stitches like scallops would be huge.
B) knitting produces little "V" towers. Crochet doesnt make thus stitch.

It just annoys me that 2 different crafts get mixed up, especially by major retailers.

BunnyLake · 30/03/2026 09:26

I really like that. I’d wear a thin vest top under it and whatever I’d deem appropriate under the shorts. If I were a festival goer I’d wear it with cowboy type boots!

Winter2020 · 30/03/2026 09:44

Call me a prude but I think I would want a white vest and white hot pants underneath so people weren't trying to work out if I had underwear on.

Laiste · 30/03/2026 09:53

Yes i think rather than going for nude i'd wear white. To stop people idly staring and trying to work out if i was naked under there.

Out of interest i had a cropped summer cardi just like that top (except in a coral colour) it was heavier than you'd expect and was actually too warm for wearing when it was actually hot !!

FlyingFlowers · 30/03/2026 09:55

I would have worn this at a barbecue when I was younger, I still might.
Definitely want white full knickers that covered all my arse. Might try nude bra or brightly coloured.

Westpoint · 30/03/2026 13:55

Thanks all. I agree the best way to go for me would be a thin vest top and a boy short type knicker so there's no ambiguity!

I think I'd need to actually try it after feedback that it might still be quite hot to wear as I would like to avoid that in the v humid summer here.

If I order it I'll report back!

Id buy under chunders in your skin tone. Most places like Marks and Spencer, primark ect sell pants and bras in a variety of skin tones from the palest to the darkest black. I'm sure these are available in the US too

I was expecting to see some kind of bikini, but actually this looks really nice and wearable. I'd wear cream boxer-style pants and a cream cami under it, or you could go wild and get them in a bright contrasting colour like hot pink or turquoise.

ArcticBells · 30/03/2026 16:44

I certainly would have worn this when young with nude underwear. Such a pretty feminine outfit

LoveHearts69 · 30/03/2026 19:47

I think this is definitely something that would look really nice if you have smaller boobs (I say this as someone who would love to wear this sort of thing but I’m bigger boobed so think the holes would reveal more and the button up section wouldn’t be as flattering! 😅)

Changeitbacktomorrow · 30/03/2026 21:41

No idea about underwear but I love this outfit and have just ordered it, thanks OP! Big fan of MV anyway and their clothes tend to suit me. I think it will be fab once I shake off the worst of the whiteness of winter.

UninitendedShark · 31/03/2026 08:47

There’s a similar set on John Lewis (own brand) called ‘sorrento’. They look lined to me. There’s shorts, trousers and a top

edit to add on closer inspection the shorts are not lined, the top isn’t but the trousers look lined.

Its 64% cotton so might be ok, but might be fairly warm.

It also isn’t the ‘hand made’ crocheted item the description leads you to believe. It’s machine knitted (knitted into a sheet of fabric then cut and sewn together) As such I’m not convinced it’s worth $155!

As someone who hand knits and crochets it really annoys me to see clothing mislabelled like this.
