Please help me accessorise this dress for a palace garden party?

I really love this Emma Willis maxi dress, I’m 5’7” and size 12 and it’s ankle length on me, not floor length. I have a cropped off-white summer jacket/blazer if it’s freezing or raining on the day.. but no idea what to wear with it.

I was thinking straw/tan coloured accessories – need to find some new wedges (the lawn is v v soft and you stand on it for hours)… and really stumped about hats - I don’t like fascinators, would really like something wide brimmed in straw but I am hopeless with hats, I have Phillip Treacy tastes on a John Lewis budget…

Ideas gratefully received!

You'll need a hat id suggest a straw one with flowers but .not convinced the dress will be formal enough

The dress is very pretty but looks quite thin and casual - more like a beach dress?

spingforward76 · 29/03/2026 05:20

This dress would be more suited to the beach. Carry on looking.

The dress isn’t formal enough I’m afraid.

similarminimer · 29/03/2026 05:34

I like it

Nice as it is, that dress isn’t formal enough for work, let alone a royal garden party

SteelyEyed · 30/03/2026 09:07

@doglover90 I really like that hat, thank you!

Thanks to others for the feedback on the dress, I'm lucky enough to have been to one of the garden parties before and I can assure you the dress is quite appropriate, it's fully lined and not at all 'beachy'. I've already bought it and worn it before to a school prize day thingy. Hoping for more hat ideas though? 🙏

@VerityUnreasonble ooh yes that's really nice - thank you, I'd never heard of Whiteley before - I like quite a few of their hats... now having a quick Vinted hunt, there are loads!
