Which of these dresses for Chelsea Flower Show?

I’m off to Chelsea Flower Show and then for supper at a nice restaurant (Daphne’s I think) with a group of friends. Looking for a lovely dress to wear and wondered about these. I’m 48, size 12 with a tum, five foot four. Mid brown bobbed hair but soft coloring.

I think others will be in (expensive) floral dresses I imagine, but I fancy something plain and will probably wear with cream woven Mary Jane’s and a cream cashmere crop cardigan. I’m obviously not cool, but would like to look well presented and a bit stylish.

Any thoughts about these two dresses? Or something else entirely?

This is gorgeous.

Blingismything · 27/03/2026 10:24

This year I am wearing a plain jade green linen midi dress and a vintage Liberty linen blazer with pink rose print. I will probably wear green suede Autry trainers.

rainbowunicorn22 · 27/03/2026 10:30

I like the Reiss one too. I would be tempted to wear with strappy sandals and a nice matching fascinator

StylishAndBeautiful · 27/03/2026 10:33

I read "green suede Autry trainers" as "green suede Aunty trainers". Smile

Not keen on the Poetry one

I like this

Dartania · 27/03/2026 10:47

The Poetry dress is dowdy, the Reiss one much nicer and plain is infinitely better than anything floral. We go every year and there are always hundreds of women in (frankly) ghastly floral dresses.

It’s not be trying to dress it up. It’s simplicity is very chic.

Badballerina · 27/03/2026 11:23

Love love love the reiss dress

Savonne · 27/03/2026 11:26

IMO though Reiss quality in rl quite poor

TonTonMacoute · 27/03/2026 11:35

I think the first one looks a mess and prefer the second one, but agree with a PP that it looks a bit clinical, you would look like a nurse in a private care home

Monolithique · 27/03/2026 11:42

The Reiss is very nice. Maybe safer to go for petite as is looks long on the model who is probably tall

oviraptor21 · 27/03/2026 12:37

I'm a floral person but love both the dresses you have linked.
I'd prefer the first as a bit more interesting as long as it doesn't accentuate features you want to mask.

FionaP1959 · 27/03/2026 14:45

Both dresses are lovely but agree with the comment that the reiss one is a bit boring. Although it could be jazzed up a bit. Beads,. earrings, bags, shoes. You would also potentially get a lot of wear from the more 'boring' one. Go with what you're happiest in and have fun!!

KeepCooking · 27/03/2026 18:41

OP I prefer plain too. I normally go for Cos and wear contrasting shoes and jewellery and jacket/cardi. If you like light blue..
And not everyone loves florals!

Agamede · 27/03/2026 19:27

@KeepCooking That is a lovely dress. I’ve had a few nice sweaters from Cos but have never found a dress that suits my shape but I might try that one. I do like light blue, and having never been a surgeon or vet, the scrubs allusion doesn’t really land with me.

I'll be deciding on my Chelsea outfit depending on the weather, a summer dress is lovely but it's not always practical, being cold makes me feel miserable and it's a long day.

anon666 · 27/03/2026 23:47

Both lovely. First one best.

Sgreenpy · 28/03/2026 09:37

I like both dresses, and several other of the plain ones. Don't go floral
I'd have a back up trousers/jacket combo in case the weather is awful/cold/wet.
Hermes scarf - would really dress it up and look FABULOUS!

Agamede · 28/03/2026 11:38

@Sgreenpy I love the idea of an Hermes scarf to dress it up. I’ve always thought they belong on other kinds of lady but am thrilled to think I probably now qualify. I’m now on the hunt for one.

No help at all - I love both. Gorge colour OP, probably one of my favourite.

deeahgwitch · 29/03/2026 10:30

I went to the Chelsea Flower Show but never thought to dress up Blush

I’ve been to Chelsea a few times. They have a variety of visitors, so you’ll see jeans/ casual outfits, and also plenty who are dressed up. Lots of visitors wear printed fabrics, especially flowery patterns. I think the dresses you’ve linked are a bit too plain for Chelsea tbh. Last year I wore smart trousers with a flowery silk blouse and a blazer, because it was chilly and a bit damp. Longish printed dresses are my preference though, with really comfortable trainers. There’s lots of walking and standing. I also take a tote style handbag so I can carry all the show guides and pamphlets, a small umbrella and a little picnic.

I don’t think OP needed help on this. At no point has she said she hasn’t been before and isn’t aware of all of this.
