Which of these dresses for Chelsea Flower Show?

I’m off to Chelsea Flower Show and then for supper at a nice restaurant (Daphne’s I think) with a group of friends. Looking for a lovely dress to wear and wondered about these. I’m 48, size 12 with a tum, five foot four. Mid brown bobbed hair but soft coloring.

I think others will be in (expensive) floral dresses I imagine, but I fancy something plain and will probably wear with cream woven Mary Jane’s and a cream cashmere crop cardigan. I’m obviously not cool, but would like to look well presented and a bit stylish.

Any thoughts about these two dresses? Or something else entirely?

The poetry one is nice but looks more of a throw over a swimming costume to explore a seaside town vibe than a flower show.
Not sure about the reiss one either tbh.
The colours are lovely though.

I really like both of them, especially the Poetry one. I'd wonder at 5'4" if it will be too long though?

PinterandPirandello · 26/03/2026 08:11

Reiss one is more stylish than the other but I think they’ll be too long or are you planning on shortening it?

I am a veteran of getting all my dresses shortened, I’ve got a giants torso and miniature legs which doesn’t help!

I really like the Poetry one, it looks well cut and fitted and a lovely fabric. It might crease when you're travelling though?

The Reiss one looks great on the model, but I feel like it would take some management - that belt would annoy me and definitely wouldn't be flattering on me, there's just too much fabric.

It's fine to not wear florals, I've been to Chelsea many times and people wear all sorts. A nice dress you can go out to dinner in will be fine.

I've seen a few dresses I fancy on Boden this season, might be worth a look?

Pleats over the abdomen will make your stomach look bigger. The model doesn't have a stomach!

And the linen one will crease horribly and look like you've slept in it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/03/2026 08:48

Do please be aware that it won’t necessarily be nice weather for Chelsea! I’ve been several times, and the one time I used one of our free tickets for a friend who’d never been, it was cold and raining!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 26/03/2026 09:01

They are both lovely and just right for CFS. Order both and try them on.

Ghostspritz · 26/03/2026 09:09

I like both dresses. I’d probably go with the one that flattered my figure the most if I was you as the waistline’s are quite different. No need for you to be in floral just because your group of friends are. Not sure about Mary Jane’s. I can never pull off the look, I feel they always look frumpy on me. Comfort would be my priority unless I wasn’t really going to explore the show. Take a waterproof is my tip. I’ve never been cold at Chelsea but often wet and then the marquee’s get crammed and sometimes there’s no cover. I see you’ve been before but if you haven’t got caught in rain it’s difficult to appreciate the lack of covered space until you do.

Cream woven shoes will be a mess by the evening, maybe trainers for day and change to fancy shoes in the evening if you must - bring something so you can sit on the grass without a huge stain on your arse.

ConstanzeMozart · 26/03/2026 09:13

The Reiss dress looks more structured and stylish to me. I like the belt. Who cares if you've got a tummy, if you like the dress?
if you want to make it look more styled/interesting, maybe go for a bright- or strong-coloured bag.

Oneearringlost · 26/03/2026 09:13

I love the Poetry ( its nice and understated). But the the Reiss one lovely too; i suppose what the question is, is, do you need to make an impression?
My feeling, about Chelsea, is that one goes for the plants and shrubs....however, I think, if I went, I'd quite like to look nice..,too x

Growlybear83 · 26/03/2026 09:16

I think they’re both lovely, and a really pretty colour. I really like Poetry clothing and prefer the style. Could you not order both and send one back?

Ophy83 · 26/03/2026 09:39

The Reiss dress is perfection. Not boring in the least.

RedRosie · 26/03/2026 09:42

I love the Reiss dress. I'm not a fan of floral, and this looks so much more classy. I'm hoping for a beautiful sunny day for you, as it looks fabulous without a cardigan and from the back. I'm very often on a bus home from work, passing the show. I'll look out for you!

ChillWith · 26/03/2026 09:45

The reiss dress is absolutely spot on!

LadybirdsProcessing · 26/03/2026 09:51

I prefer the Poetry one. I like the simplicity. It would be a refreshing counterpoint to the sea of floral prints (and I like floral prints).

For whatever it's worth, I'm not sure the wide belt on the Reiss dress would be flattering to someone with a bit of a tummy, but you know your figure better than we do.

remotecontrolledphone · 26/03/2026 09:53

I don't think the Reiss belt works in gold - it's the wrong tone, it cheapens the dress. And the Poetry dress is drab.
Why don't you try more pattern rather than floral - stripes, spots, geometric. Plain light coloured dresses are hard to pull off without some serious accessorising.

viques · 26/03/2026 10:02

More important than a dress at Chelsea is comfortable shoes. Different surfaces, thousands of people not looking where they are going, swampy if raining.
I would go with trainers!

Have a great time, remember to take a notebook if you are serious about plants, otherwise take pictures.

Wtafmakeitstop · 26/03/2026 10:31

I would really hesitate to wear cream shoes there. I know you’ve been before so I’m probably telling you something you already know, but it can get quite muddy if there has been any rain at all and even if not it’s often dusty.

Southwest12 · 26/03/2026 10:46

If it's rained at all I wouldn't wear pale shoes, if you do don't stand on any grass areas. I ruined a pair of cream ballet flats the other year trying to buy a cocktail as the ground was muddy after rain two days before. A friend also ruined a pair of expensive suede heels two days earlier.

BIossomtoes · 26/03/2026 11:44

I think they’re both lovely. A real palate refresher after all the patterns everyone else will be wearing. Don’t for the love of God ruin their elegant simplicity with floral scarves or anything fussy. I need a new frock like I need leprosy but I’m severely tempted by the Poetry one.
