Which of these dresses for Chelsea Flower Show?

Agamede · 26/03/2026 06:39

I’m off to Chelsea Flower Show and then for supper at a nice restaurant (Daphne’s I think) with a group of friends. Looking for a lovely dress to wear and wondered about these. I’m 48, size 12 with a tum, five foot four. Mid brown bobbed hair but soft coloring.

I think others will be in (expensive) floral dresses I imagine, but I fancy something plain and will probably wear with cream woven Mary Jane’s and a cream cashmere crop cardigan. I’m obviously not cool, but would like to look well presented and a bit stylish.

Any thoughts about these two dresses? Or something else entirely?

I prefer the reise one - the other is very boring

I think if you get the right size and it’s not tight the tummy won’t show

RHS Chelsea is really, really crowded - loads of people eating ice creams etc. A plain light colour with show every mark if someone splashes coffee, drips ice cream or just causes you to lean against a dusty wall. If you plan to wear the same dress for the flower show and dinner, I’d suggest something a bit more forgiving, perhaps a floral print or a darker colour.

I like both dresses but I wonder if the Reiss one will be difficult to pull off. I’ve been to Chelsea flower show and both will fit in fine.
I like this one which is a similar style but you may not like the composition

I thinks you are wise to notice if florals don't suit you op. Lots of people don't suit them but choose them because they look pretty on the hanger. Clothes and curtains need different styles of assessments!

LizzieSiddal · 26/03/2026 13:20

I’m not a floral person either but I think those dresses are so dull and ordinary.
It's such a special occasion, surely you can find something a bit more exciting!

Also a warning, the last time I went a few years ago, we had a massive thunderstorm, we managed to fit into the big marque and kept dry but it was so cold afterwards.

Omg I need that Reiss dress! 😍

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 26/03/2026 16:24

I like the second one but in the green. It’s such an antidote to florals.

The Reiss dress is really lovely

Slightly off topic but I have a Poetry dress similar to that one but 100% linen and its smells peculiar. No matter how I wash it or what I use or if I dry it outside or inside. Never had that before. Anyone experienced that? I'm thinking of getting rid of it which is annoying as they aren't cheap.

Wash it with Dettol laundry cleanser

Thank you! Will give it a crack.

My thoughts are that while I love the clean pale blue look and natural fabrics what are they going to look like at the end of the day - they'll be very unforgiving of stains and you could end up a crumpled mess by the time you are at the restaurant. There's probably a reason for the florals pr other prints as they offer an element of disguise!

ScrollingLeaves · 26/03/2026 19:40

I think they are both lovely, fresh, spring- like and understated. I also think it is very nice that they are plain.

I agree you should try petit for the Reiss one.

The Reiss one has more structure than the Poetry one, but the cloth of the Poetry is especially lovely. I think the only way to know which suits you the most is to try them on.

I wondered if the wide shoulders sleeves of the Reiss would work so well with the cream cropped cardigan. Be sure to take that with you when you go to try them.

StylishAndBeautiful · 26/03/2026 22:13

The Reiss one. They're both nice.

Shellythesnail2333 · 26/03/2026 22:28

The Reiss one. I can only imagine how creased the linen Poetry one would be by the end of the day!

Overtheatlantic · 27/03/2026 03:33

I tried on the Reiss one and at 5’3” I can say that it was enormous. I thought about getting a petite and sizing down but I also didn’t like the way the shoulders sat so there were too many strikes against it.

And the linen one will crease horribly and look like you've slept in it.

So? People who love linen couldn't give a flying fig, and why would they care what others think.

Well if you post a dress on mn to hear what people think…it’s a bit of a giveaway - you tend to be a person who gives a fig about what people think.

Daffodilsinthespring · 27/03/2026 06:20

First one is ok.

second one looks like a sack of potatoes as as though you haven’t bothered.

With all those darts at the waist? That detailing is lovely.

Ophir · 27/03/2026 07:38

I love the Reiss dress, perfect for the occasion

Don't think it really needs dressing up, it’s classy and the simplicity is what makes it

the other one, no, makes me feel sad

Calliopespa · 27/03/2026 08:30

OP I recently saw a very similar cress in a lovely fuchsia shade by Max Mara with a very pretty sash tie. The fuchsia might look slightly more "floral" without having a pattern? It was beautifully cut.

ETA it was ramie so should be breathable if hot. The shade might have been "cyclamen."

deeahgwitch · 27/03/2026 08:42

Both are beautiful @Agamede
