How to get waves in hair

Jojojojo55 · 23/03/2026 11:34

growing hair which is now shoulder length, want to style it with lose waves, any advice on what to use for this, it’s currently just hanging straight

OP posts:
Lovelygreenpen · 28/03/2026 06:36

How does Claudia winkleman do her hair? I love waves with straight ends. Hers is perfect of that genre and miraculously uncrispy and straw like, looks so soft and shiny.
Here’s where reality and me part company tho- I really dislike what hairspray does to my hair being so crispy and sticky. Always smells grim too. And I can’t bear using straightners because I can see the moisture being dried out of my hair in steam. No thanks.
so any no heat no hairspray advice for a wavey/straight ends look on very thick fine straight hair?

FlyingFlowers · 28/03/2026 08:30

We used to sleep in rags when young. Possibly longer hair than OP describes.

Lots of adverts for Tymo here - a brand I’ve never heard of before. Feels a bit suspicious! Or is it really a miracle brand?

The curl pro really IS that good! I’m a complete dunce at hair styling and even I can get lovely waves and curls in less than 10 minutes with this.

I just plait my hair after washing and leave it to dry overnight. Cheaper and better for your hair.

And you don't even need to plait it wet! Overnight plaiting was the favoured way for impoverished 70's teenagers to get Pre-Raphaelite waves.

Danikm151 · 28/03/2026 17:53

Sock curls over night.

works every time 😀

FruAashild · 29/03/2026 10:44

Love that this thread is basically half people advertising some dodgy Chinese product and the other half suggesting various cheap or low cost and heat free ways to get curls overnight.

Talipesmum · 29/03/2026 11:27

Another one recommending the tymo thing - please search my other posts if you think I’m a style and beauty paid advertiser, you’ll find the occasional one about buying shoes for fat feet, probably some posts on kids applying to university, some in the sex and gender, and a smattering of random other stuff.

Flat fine straight hair that doesn’t hold a curl, plus general incompetence and lack of desire for anything high effort as I will immediately give up, burn myself or both. Bought one with an Amazon voucher I got for Xmas, and it really is v good. I had to look up how to section my hair as I get tangled up otherwise. I can’t use any of the “heatless curls” methods as there is zero natural wave and a strong propensity for my hair to ping back to ruler status. Tried the tymo thing and with a bit of hairspray afterwards the waves lasted all day, though were nearly dropped out by bedtime. I’ve been googling to see what sort of product would help hold them longer. I need a real dummies guide. But it’s easily the best thing I’ve tried, both for simplicity and for results.

This thread has convinced me I need a Tymo! Can anyone tell me the difference between the curl pro and the curl plus please? Is it just the longer barrel for longer hair or is there any other difference?

I think it’s just the barrel length. I got the normal non pro one and my hair is long bob. There are billions of videos explaining but was easy enough for me to choose as def in the shorter zone.

Thanks, mine is a bit longer than shoulder length so I might need the plus

I've just ordered a tymo curl pro plus, it better be as good and as easy to use as you all say it is!

I bought a tymo for DD for Christmas which curls beautifully but neither that nor any other product will keep the curls for longer than 2hrs max. I am useless when trying to help here as I have tight curls but she is dead straight. What to use to keep the curls in?. Edited for Typo!

Placestogo · 31/03/2026 09:14

@lovelygreenpen Try wow style on steroids finishing spray
not your average granny spray. Leave your hair textured and styled without the cakey aspect

for loose curls, i bought a babyliss wand but i wished i bought the tymo curler. I researched the differences for weeks but went for the wand so i could get different styles of curls… and a more natural finish…
it is too much of a faff and im not skilled enough… im just glad i didnt go for the expensive cloud nine wand!!!

It's arrived, I'm so excited to try it!

How to get waves in hair
mochimoons · 01/04/2026 14:30

I have the waver: https://www.boots.com/tymo-rovy-wave-curling-iron-pink-10363165?srsltid=AfmBOoqRnPYOYJAoUTFTfp2RTxtP9-bBPScHz1EuPupAGJTPsxm11z3v

I'd like to hear the review of the curler though @InvisibleSmoke

InvisibleSmoke · 01/04/2026 18:28

@mochimoons I'm mad that noone told me about this wonderful gadget sooner!!!

I tried it this morning and curled my whole head in fifteen minutes and that's including reading the instructions and figuring out how it works, I expect it'll be ten minutes next time now that I know what I'm doing.

I have never ever before managed to curl my hair by myself without getting frustrated and giving up halfway through after burning myself repeatedly. If you've ever seen the video of Ann Widdicombe trying to use a hair straightener, that's exactly what I am like trying to do anything to my hair, but with a lot more swearing.

I've bought so many gadgets over the years that look like they are finally the easy to use one that will be foolproof for even my impatient uncoordinated self and every time I try them a couple of times and get frustrated and give them away to people who are good at this stuff. It's a running joke at this point, if someone wants a new hair gadget they mention it to me knowing that I will buy it and hate it and give it to them. I love this one and am keeping it!!!

I didn't use any products today because I wanted to be able to brush it out easily before work if it was a disaster but my poker straight hair which usually falls flat immediately is still amazingly wavy and shiny!

InvisibleSmoke · 01/04/2026 18:32

More thoughts in case this is useful for anyone else...

As well as being uncoordinated I struggle too with achey shoulders and wrists trying to hold curling tongs above my head at awkward angles. When I opened the box it looked big and heavy and my heart sank thinking there's no way I'll be able to use it, but it is very lightweight despite looking bigger than a normal curling wand and as you don't have to contort your wrists into odd angles even if it was heavy it would still be easier to use. I even curled the back of my hair by myself easily!

And it's impossible to burn yourself, you can even rest the barrel against your head or ear or face safely!

5* so far there is nothing I dislike about it and will be recommending it to everyone (but they can buy their own this time!)

Talipesmum · 01/04/2026 22:16

Glad you like it!
I still don’t understand how people are doing their whole head in 10/15 minutes, it takes me a lot longer cos I find I miss bits. It was quicker today - I enlisted my teenage boy to do the bits at the back for me and that went a lot faster - decent results too!

Poutypants · 02/04/2026 08:30

Yay! Glad you like it. I’m the same as you, buy a device, don’t get on with it, and never use it again! But the tymo is a game changer

SuperSharpShooter · 02/04/2026 08:31

This ^^
Worth every penny!

Woops, sorry... this one.

InvisibleSmoke · 02/04/2026 19:26

I might have found something I don't like about it... how do you clean it?! I don't use a lot of hair products so won't need to worry about any product build up for a while but it will eventually need at least a wipe over. Anyone got any cleaning tips or ticks to reach the inaccessible parts?

@Talipesmum I guess that'll depend on how much hair you have, mine is fine but I have a lot of it. I did quite big sections as didn't want tight curls on the first try and I probably did miss some bits at the back. I forgot about switching the directions button too. When I use it again tomorrow morning I will have more time to be more precise.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/04/2026 15:28

I have one of those Tymo in my basket .
My hair is wavy but I usually wear it tied back , I really need to do something with it .
I've got the Dyson Airstrait for when I want sleek smooth but I fancy some beachy waves ........

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/04/2026 21:03

I have ordered the curler tool the one that grabs a portion of hair and twirls it .

I am in that what do I do with my hair phase , I need to get the ends done but not too short . It sits below my shoulders at present . I keep debating fringe/no fringe but if I can wave the sides I think I can do without a fringe .
Hopefully if it waves round my face a bit .

I will give it a try . Might have to wrestle it away from DD
