Highlights gone wrong, how to fix

Help. Had my hair highlighted yesterday hoping for a natural golden tone. This looks very stripy and obvious I think. Do I go back and get them to put toner in? I feel really miserable, I saved up for ages. Thanks.

Personally think you’re being unreasonable, your pics aren’t very clear but they just look like highlights. Maybe ask for a root tap

DinoLil · 19/03/2026 08:09

Nothing wrong with those imo.

TapsOff · 19/03/2026 08:11

Would they ever look less streaky? I feel like ginger spice

As someone else said the photos aren’t clear but they look like normal highlights.

Nitgel · 19/03/2026 08:17

The don't look like normal highlights. They look streaky. Did they not put in any toner at all ? Not sure i would go back there in the future. Was it a whole head as there's bits missing

TapsOff · 19/03/2026 08:25

No toner. If I went back and asked for one would that make it more muted? That’s what I want.

Highlighters are stripes as that’s how they’re applied. Sounds like you wanted all over colour rather than highlights. They look fine and not even brassy so I’m not sure what you want the toner to achieve.

Nitgel · 19/03/2026 08:49

My hairdresser always adds toner and the highlights aren't stripes. I would go back but bear in mind that the toner will fade

Your hair is lovely

Try osmo black ice shampoo and conditioner.

Highlights are not that striped. Just look at any hairdresser video doing this, they take a small sliced section of hair and then weave the tail comb through the section. That way they pick up a few strands at a time. The weaved section gets foiled and bleach applied with colour.

OP your base colour is very different to the highlighted sections and I think the highlights themselves are a bit thick. I would go back and ask them to tone down the bleached sections.

This very short video will show how highlights are meant to be done plus the end result which looks very natural.

Will toning it down be simple? Anything I should say/not say?

Yes, a toner can help. You'll still see the contrast but it won't be as stark. Or you could break up the chunky strips with some low lights.

They are generally semi permanent and fade with time.

minnowonthesay · 19/03/2026 09:42

Hi Lights can take a while to bed in sometimes, so I’d give it a couple of weeks. If you have a hairdressing wholesalers near you, Sallys? You could go and buy a wash in toner, no mixing just apply straight to hair, you’ll probably get two uses out of it that will take you over the next few settling in weeks. Just be careful what you buy, anything ash may turn them green, I think I’d go for a medium golden blonde which is an 8 in hairdresser colour world.

Nitgel · 19/03/2026 09:44

Just ask for a toner in the shade you want to achieve. Don't buy anything yourself.

I’m going back in later today and someone is going to try and fix it. Anything I should look out for? I’m so annoyed they’ve needlessly ruined my hair condition with all this bleach.
