My young daughter at university has just messaged me to ask for advice as the hairdryer I gave her smells really bad when she uses it. She says it smells of burning fish and I assume that it’s not coming from her kitchen. She is very practical so I trust her! It must be at least twenty years old and I haven’t used it in that time - maybe even thirty years!

£30- £50 (?) mark. I really don’t know - maybe more? How much for a decent hair dryer. She is ASC, so bonus marks for a quieter an cooler one as she is sensitive to smell, touch and heat etc

I have GHD from back in the day that are still going strong but I don’t use a hairdryer.

She beautiful long hair. Not curly, fairly straight.

Mumsnetters you are great! Please could you recommend us a brand to replace.
Thank you all

I got a Tresseme 2000w hairdryer from Amazon fairly recently as my old one went bang. £12. Neither too hot or too loud.
The fishy smell is something electrical, gone wrong.

Babyliss from Boots. They’re all decent.

And yes to the fishy smell being dodgy old electrics

First of all- has she cleared the filter at the back?

If it’s a case of it being really old she can’t go wrong with a babyliss hairdryer or remington at that budget.

Quieter hairdryers are in the hundreds of pounds range.

I have thus professional one from Sallys, it must be over 10 years old now - it’s on offer for £48.99 from £64.99. Interestingly I’ve bought a Dyson and an MD London in between, all at the £200 mark but I always go back to my good old Diva - all the others make my hair frizz.https://www.sallybeauty.co.uk/hair/hair-electricals/hair-dryers/diva-edit-veloce-3800-pro-hair-dryer/DIVAVELOCE3800.html
