Hybrid trainers for the gym / work for someone who doesn’t like “sporty” trainers.

I’ve got big ideas of starting to go to the gym before work as the days get longer.
i would have to go straight to work afterwards. I cycle and definitely don’t have space to carry an extra pair of trainers around with me.

I’m pretty fussy with my clothes. I only ever wear gym / running shoes for the gym or on runs. The rest of the time I wear Adidas gazelles and the like. I do not like the look of “sporty” trainers with normal clothes. My New Balance 327s are a sporty as I’d usually go and I’m not massively keen on how they look (though they are super comfy).

Help me find a gym to work trainer that I can run in on the treadmill but equally don’t look too much like a gym shoe. It’s important that they are comfy and cushioned and are designed for actual sport, just don’t look like they are!
I should also say I’m in my 50s.

Am I asking for the moon on a stick?

I wouldn’t wear gym trainers to work myself, sweat and all.

SherbetDipDap · 16/03/2026 15:36

I would absolutely stink if I did this 🤣

You might get away with it if you’re just lifting or doing very light cardio but definitely not if you plan to actually run.

OP I was going to suggest the NB 327s 😀 I wear these to work and think they look smart, I wear them to the gym if I don’t have time to go home first to get my trainers or if I forget my gym trainers

You need separate work and gym trainers.

They'll get too sweaty to be able to wear for a whole day.

Bergamotte · 16/03/2026 15:41

Are you sure you're allowed to wear outdoor shoes in the gym / on the machines?

You could wear grippy "slipper" socks. They would take up hardly any space in your bag.

CraftyNavySeal · 16/03/2026 15:41

Leave work shoes at work or put basket/panniers on bike to carry trainers.

No way would I wear sweaty gym trainers at work!

ElectoralControversy · 16/03/2026 15:44

Option B - lift heavy at the gym, and do it in your gazelles or similar flat shoe.
Run at the weekend.

Holdmybeermoment · 16/03/2026 16:04

Just change your shoes

The gym definitely has no rules about outdoor shoes. Is that a thing?

Do you mean wear grippy socks at the gym with no trainers? Not a good idea for many reasons!

I’m most like to be doing more weights and less running. I’m not concerned about wearing the same shoes all day.

Im a community physio. I can’t just change in the office or stick shoes in a basket on my bag. I need to carry everything I need.

Adidas ADV 2-very comfortable and supportive for HIIT and weights. I wouldn't say the black look too sporty, personally. Under flared/wide legged gym trousers, work with a jacket over my gym top, they're smart enough for my job and I do the opposite of you-I go straight to training after work, usually, and I I need to do is take off my jacket.

You need a pair for the gym and another for work.

But the point of this thread that there will be days where I need trainers that I can wear to the gym and then on to work. I have gym trainers and work trainers already.

Allbirds Dashers - I take these when I am travelling and I only want one pair of trainers. They are not too sporty and in black are reasonably smart with trousers or jeans. They are good for light running, walking and weights.
