Smartish black trouser help please!

First time on style and beauty, but I need some help, and fast!

I have a job interview next week, and have nothing to wear on the bottom half. I'm looking for some black trousers, cheap as possible, but I really need to stay away from wide leg, ridiculous barrel leg, and slim fit if I can. They also need to be able to pair well with boots, as I don't own any shoes...

I have tried doing a few searches, but literally everything seems to be wide or barrel, or joggers which regularly come up in the same searches for some weird reason.

Thanks in advance!

Try Next and Fatface

M&S? Or Next - they have reasonably priced work trousers.

I rate H&M smart trousers. I've recently bought them in navy and dark brown. They are slim fit and sit just above the shoe on me (5ft 6). They are 54% cotton which makes them look more expensive than they are as they don't have that polyester shine.

I can't link them as i have their app and can't work out how to just open the bloody website instead! But search for their cigarette pants at £22.99.
As I said, I'm 5ft 6 and they are nowhere near as short on me as on the model!

Oh I think I misread your post, I thought you meant you wanted slim fit but maybe slim was still part of the "avoid" list. Sorry!

Fluffywabbits · 13/03/2026 06:53

Try the supermarkets if you need a really cheap pair.

I do plan on going to tesco on the way home from work 😂
But I just wondered if anyone knew of any 'normal' trousers lol to save me traipsing around everywhere!
Will take a look at next and h&m now as well, thanks

@faineante thanks, but I'm most definitely employed, just never had a need to wear trousers for anything since my last job interview 20 odd years ago 😂

Have a look at Tu clothing. I bought some trousers from there really cheap and they look much more expensive than they are.

M&S jersey wide leg are not very wide - more a midway between straight and wide. They hang well and are so versatile.
