Zigzag hair

Wasn't sure where to post this.. but seeking help for my already sorry state of hair!

I am late 30s and have very fine, flyaway, easy to break hair. Always been this way but worse since having children.

Whilst doing a head massage on myself this evening, I have just discovered zigzag looking, coarse, hair on my head. Have just seen 1 so far, about an inch long, but can feel a few more growing.

Anyone experienced anything like this? Wondering whether it's hormonal or something else.

I regularly use a scalp exfoliater, kerastase hair products, and take a hair multivitamin to try and maintain hair health, for the very little hair I have!

I used to get them growing out of and near a scar at the very top of my forehead. Do you have any scarring, spots or bumps that could affect the way the hair grows out of the follicle?

No not that I am aware of, not experienced any head trauma and my scalp is smooth, if not slightly dry and flaky

I have a few and always have. But my hair is extremely coarse so they don't look especially out of place. They just look like they have a much tighter curl pattern than the rest of my hair.

Peri menopause hair.

I did wonder if it could be linked to peri!

Hi OP. It can indicate a few different things happening at the follicle level. It could be hormonal changes from postpartum shifts that are still affecting your hair years later, or it could be follicular miniaturization where the follicle gets damaged or distorted and starts producing weird-textured hair instead of your normal fine strands. Sometimes nutritional deficiencies can also cause changes in hair texture and quality. Best to check with your dermatologist so they can examine your scalp.

I've always had a mix of textures although predominantly coarse. I just assumed the odd zig zag was just genes! Similarly I occasionally find smooth fine hairs too.
