No it doesn’t!

Your skin is a literal barrier

I always thought that, but how do products like ibuprofen gel work? 🤔

I have the Inkey List Ceramide Moisturiser, it's always on offer somewhere for around £15

I also like Cerave moisturising lotion, I use it like a serum, and Q&A peptides serum.

This one. Really moisturizing and skin feels comforted.

Revolution Miracle Cream. Infact, their whole skincare range. Whoops No7 etc and a fraction of the cost.

“Certain parabens phthalates & synthetic fragrances have raised concerns over hormone disruption”.
It’s up to every individual to make their own decisions about what they put on their skin.
I only stated that I wouldn’t like to use product s that I wouldn’t eat.
Thanks.

I have really sensitive skin and use Clinique which is expensive so now also use Boots own brand everyday fragrance free moisturiser. It’s really rich and decent and it’s £1.65

Sandramademedoit · 11/03/2026 07:06

Cetaphil saved my (mature, grumpy) skin. I buy the big tub & use it as a day & night cream then add the SPF over the top for daytime. It’s literally the only brand my skin will tolerate.

Peripain · 11/03/2026 07:07

Anyone tried the new plant based Nivea?

a cheap budget one which is good is the Lacura Cavier moisturiser around £5 I think

I recently bought the Lacura caviar gold and it’s without a doubt the best moisturiser I’ve used in bloody years. I put my Clinique one back in the cupboard. It feels gorgeous and hydrates my skin so well but I’m anxious about re buying it as it was a middle aisle product 😱

Waitrose Pure day cream. Absolutely brilliant and it costs £3.50. I've not found anything better.

I was coming on to say the pure night cream which I use twice a day to save having two creams on the go.

The cleansing milk is a good alternative to dermalogica calming cleanser.

Imfat · 11/03/2026 08:52

I use Cetaphil moisturiser for normal/dry sensitive skin. And use a sp over the top.
It's cheaper to buy on eBay than boots etc.
Cetaphil also make a cream with the sp already in but I find it doesn't suit my skin.

Organic coconut oil… can use it to shallow fry with too.
I also like to use on my skin, what I’d be happy to put in my mouth.
your skin is your biggest organ, so whatever you put on it, is absorbed into your bloodstream.
No doubt I’ll get slammed for suggesting, Lol!

Skin doesn't absorb everything you put on it. This is an internet myth.

Think about transdermal patches (nicotine, hrt etc).
They would be simple to make if skin just absorbed everything but they're actually a significant pharmaceutical challenge which include specific penetration enhancers to help the active ingredient get through the skin barrier at a therapeutic dose.
Without them, most of the drug just sits on the surface.

The myth has been around the internet a long time, I used to formulate natural skincare in the early 2000s and it was used by other clean beauty brands then. But I could never find an actual scientific source for it.

Boots cucumber moisturiser in the little green tub. £1.50 ish. Keep it in the fridge and apply to tired morning face while kettle boils. Wonderful!! After coffee has done it's job I then use Nivea moisturiser and I look gorgeous. 😉

REDB99 · 11/03/2026 09:05

I love Lush Skin Drink. I’m 46 and it’s the only one that gives me the moisture I need. It’s £28 which is a lot cheaper than some of the Clinique, Lancôme and Elemis products I was buying.

Cerave pm moisturiser and also the hyaluronic acid serum. I’ve been using on repeat for about 3 years now. Buy when on offer in Boots!

I really like the cerave pm moisturiser..then use separate sunscreen

BlahBlahName · 11/03/2026 09:11

After cleansing in the morning I used a niacinamide and zinc serum (cheap) and generally one of the Avene hydranse moisturisers with SPF. Evening I use the Avene Multi intensive night cream (some people find this intense at the start so you could start a couple of days a week and build up). This is a good combo for my late forties sensitive, dry but acne prone skin.

Ive just started using the Inkey List ceramide moisturiser. Its fantastic, even better than my usual Medik8 and much cheaper! I’ve only been using it a few days but my skin looks and feels great. Highly recommend. Their Omega Water Cream is also very good.

tfu · 11/03/2026 09:26

I also use lacura caviar - so good and cheap

FartSock5000 · 11/03/2026 09:37

@IFeelLikeChickenTonite don't fall for gimmicks.

Choose one with hyaluronic acid and apply to wet or damp skin. If you can find one with ceramides and peptides too, you're on to a winner.

Cerave serums are a good, budget friendly starting point,

If your skin is aging, you'll want to look into Retinol based creams as well to help combat fine lines.

MimiGC · 11/03/2026 09:42

I have used L’Oreal Hydra Genius Aloe Water moisturiser for years and love it. But it is getting harder to find and increasingly expensive . Does anyone know a good substitute?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 11/03/2026 09:45

I used boots vitamin c moisturiser and now using Sainsbury’s cucumber moisturiser. Both are equally good.

NippyNinjaCrab · 11/03/2026 09:51

Another vote for the Inkey list, it feels amazing and my skin is sensitive. Khiels also gets a vote. The worst I've used for my skin is any of the Liz Earle range including toners and cleansers. I am always reluctant to go spendy on face care as its often a waste on my skin.

SideshowAuntSallyxx · 11/03/2026 10:05

I use Nivea Q10, have used nivea in various forms for almost 40 years moved on to Q10 a couple of years ago as my skin was getting dry and the usual moisturiser wasn't working as well.

I have extremely sensitive skin but nivea doesn't irritate it.

Hi OP. For dry, sensitive mature skin, you want to look for moisturizers with ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids which actually repair your barrier rather than just sitting on top, plus humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid to pull water into your skin. Niacinamide is amazing for mature skin because it strengthens your barrier and reduces redness, and squalane or panthenol are great for adding moisture without irritation. Avoid anything with fragrance, essential oils, or a ton of plant extracts since sensitive skin reacts to those, and look for creams rather than lotions since you need that richer texture for dryness. The good news is you absolutely don't need to spend a fortune, I actually recommend checking out drugstore products because many of them have really solid formulations with effective concentrations of actives at affordable prices. Hope this helps!

Thanks for that Chat GPT 🙄

ChirpyAmberLion · 11/03/2026 11:15

Another vote for Aveeno Calm & Restore! It's a life and face changer for me having spent a fortune on a plethora of other products to try and calm my sensitive skin, especially around my eyes (Aveeno do an eye cream but it's not from the Calm & Restore range and I can only use that sparingly under my eyes, otherwise the skin/bag/wrinkles flare up). My skin is moisturised and as smooth as a baby's bottom. 😆

UmberMoose · 11/03/2026 11:20

I use the cerave moisturiser and its good. So here goes my routine with that:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Cerave moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
