Waterproof Raincoat with hood - but cute!

JudyP · 10/03/2026 21:03

Most of my raincoats have been on the more utilitarian design, or at least that is how I remember them. I need a new one and would love stylish but functional, if it’s even possible, so waterproof or water repellent and a hood.
Price - prob not over£150 ish
anyone bought a nice new raincoat for spring? Thanks!

I have a rainsisters one but bought it in their sale at around half price. Cute, have a hood, rainproof - but not cheap!

I have the “Lola” raincoat from Fatface which I bought a few years ago. It’s so versatile and easy to wear and I get lots of compliments on it. I don’t know if they sell it anymore but that sort of style is perfect IMO

Melancholyflower · 10/03/2026 22:34

I also have the Rains long jacket and and as PP said it's really useful; it folds up to go in a bag and mine is big enough to put over a lighter jacket, if needed, but I think the OP wanrs something less utilitarian.

Georgiepud · 10/03/2026 22:42

Best to get one you really really like because this pesky rain is set to go on and on!

fiorentina · 10/03/2026 22:53

I also have a Rains one which is great. I’d love a Damson Madder one though too, as they look a bit less practical!

JudyP · 11/03/2026 00:11

What do you think of this? I’m struggling with longer line jackets with wide leg trousers as my previous raincoat was more like some of the suggestions but with this one am concerned my bum will get very wet! It’s an American company but DH is over there fairly often ? https://www.quince.com/women/water-repellant-windbreaker-jacket?color=black&productPosition=1&searchQuery=Jacket+women&tracker=searchPage__search_section__search_results

The main purpose of a raincoat is to be functional and I don’t think that one is - it’s far too short to keep you dry.

A trenchcoat style might work with wide leg trousers.

Or something this kind of shape perhaps

Thanks - yes v good point re function but this was why I needed help! Because I’ve got myself overthinking what I want versus what is practical!

Mine is only shower resistant, but it's cute! And pretty cheap.

I have a Seasalt one which is completely waterproof and comes down to my knees but doesn’t look like I’m about to climb a mountain. I don’t think they do the same one any more but they have similar. “Shower resistant” is a waste of money here in Scotland where we really do rain well!

I keep looking at these. Are they sweaty? I find that rain/water proof jackets can make me really hot and bothered particularly if it's humid anyway.

I like a waterproof trench coat with a hood but it's a very rare beast. These are both just over budget but under £200

I've tried this Seasalt one on and liked it. (Sorry if it's already been posted up-page but I couldn't get the link to work)

And then at £249 but they do offers sometimes, Protected Species. H ood is detachable. I've had a knee length version of this for at least 8 years (They don't do that length any more):

I am tempted by this one, I think it's cute, but you might feel differently.

Ive been eyeing this one up for spring summer!

is it so short so that your bum gets wet? Trying to get both practical and cute … but this is cute!

I haven’t found my rainsisters coat sweaty at all although I did buy it in winter. They give an indication of the temperature range each coat is designed for on the website which might be helpful?

JudyP · 11/03/2026 10:02

Do you have this one? Is it heavy as well as waterproof? It sort of looks like it might be v warm? Thx!

Thanks for these - when I try a trench coat on I feel like the phantom raspberry blower of old London Town! I’m not v tall and sometimes they swamp me so I’ve always done mid thigh length for that reason, I like them on everyone else!

I have a short trench coat but Im mindful of how a big coat or longer coat is not that practical, if you're in a cafe or restaurant, it drags on the floor if you put it on the back of the chair, very few places have coat hooks

Yesterday I had the pleasure of using a public toilet 7 times. A mixture of trains, train station and public loos plus a shop. Only one of those toilets out of 7 had a hook. So Im there with my backpack (which I wont put on the floor of a toilet), my coat with a belt, my trousers (with a belt), various layers trying to tuck back in once done. The coat had to be all bundled up while Im trying to sit on the loo.

And I hate the back of my coat touching the inside of the loo lid because I gather from various threads on here people think they should shut the lid when flushing so the lid is covered in god knows what which then transfers onto my coat.

I hate that very few toilets have hooks and it always makes me hate that Im wearing a coat. Thank god I didnt have a scarf as well, as I normally do.

Anyway, rant over, I prefer short coats!!!
