Waterproof Raincoat with hood - but cute!

JudyP · 10/03/2026 21:03

Most of my raincoats have been on the more utilitarian design, or at least that is how I remember them. I need a new one and would love stylish but functional, if it’s even possible, so waterproof or water repellent and a hood.
Price - prob not over£150 ish
anyone bought a nice new raincoat for spring? Thanks!

is it so short so that your bum gets wet? Trying to get both practical and cute … but this is cute!

Not to be a Debbie downer but this jacket will not keep you dry in any kind of rain. Buy it by all means as its cute- but it wont really be any kind of real rain protection x

Do you have this one? Is it heavy as well as waterproof? It sort of looks like it might be v warm? Thx!

@JudyP I don't have it but I'm looking myself and have put it on my possibles list. I've found it cheaper on another site and in a different colour. There's a video and it looks waterproof/windproof without bulky warm liner. I'd say it looks spring shower weight.

I haven’t found my rainsisters coat sweaty at all although I did buy it in winter. They give an indication of the temperature range each coat is designed for on the website which might be helpful?

I've been looking at Rain Sisters too, for similar reasons to the OP, and while I love the look of them, I only ever see them styled with skirts and dresses. Do you wear yours with trousers? Does it look okay?

comeundone · 11/03/2026 12:06

Ilse Jacobsen are quite good for this (they retail in UK through various places incl JL, https://www.ilsejacobsen.com/collections/rain-jackets), I have a nice mid calf-length one which is good for this time of year and doesn't make me look totally like I'm off to scale the Eiger).

Heres one with trousers, I dont think it looks as good

Perhaps with skinny trousers it would be better so you get the contrast of the flare and the leg

That's what I feared, @likelysuspect - thanks for sharing that photo, I agree. I've been eyeing up a Protected Species mac instead, and I think that will be more versatile.

What do you think of this? I’m struggling with longer line jackets with wide leg trousers as my previous raincoat was more like some of the suggestions but with this one am concerned my bum will get very wet! It’s an American company but DH is over there fairly often ? https://www.quince.com/women/water-repellant-windbreaker-jacket?color=black&productPosition=1&searchQuery=Jacket+women&tracker=searchPage__search_section__search_results

Too short

Seasalt waterproof coats are absolutely brilliant! I have this one - I wear it every day for long dog walks and it has kept me totally dry all through this awful rain Women's Waterproof Coat | Seasalt Cornwall - Seasalt Cornwall

I have a short trench coat but Im mindful of how a big coat or longer coat is not that practical, if you're in a cafe or restaurant, it drags on the floor if you put it on the back of the chair, very few places have coat hooks

Yesterday I had the pleasure of using a public toilet 7 times. A mixture of trains, train station and public loos plus a shop. Only one of those toilets out of 7 had a hook. So Im there with my backpack (which I wont put on the floor of a toilet), my coat with a belt, my trousers (with a belt), various layers trying to tuck back in once done. The coat had to be all bundled up while Im trying to sit on the loo.

And I hate the back of my coat touching the inside of the loo lid because I gather from various threads on here people think they should shut the lid when flushing so the lid is covered in god knows what which then transfers onto my coat.

I hate that very few toilets have hooks and it always makes me hate that Im wearing a coat. Thank god I didnt have a scarf as well, as I normally do.

Anyway, rant over, I prefer short coats!!!

I may have to look at short trench coats - but I still think I need a hood and a classic trench doesn't have a hood and this is back to the aesthetics vs practicality - a classic trench looks great but a trench with a hood is something I'm not sure I can get on board with! I am talking myself in and out of things as I go along...

I hate going into that Rainsisters site because I love their stuff, would love to own a coat like that but I cant justify it as I only have trousers, I dont wear skirts and dresses

However, I have now seen on their site they do short jackets......

BigSkies2022 · 11/03/2026 13:18

I have one from Lululemon. It’s olive and quite slim cut, so Id describe it as chic rather than cute. But it’s a definitely upgrade from my previous option, which I grabbed off my husband from the donation box. I think it was £140 ish, but that’s a sale price. It’s got a hood, taped zips, etc.

Cocktailsandcoffee · 11/03/2026 16:00

I absolutely love my rain rebel coat from Lululemon, have never bought from this brand and it’s over your budget but some colours are within budget (or may be able to get from Vinted?).

it’s long, hooded, keeps me completely dry and the waist cinches in so gives a nice shape. V glad I went for it as was umming and ahhing about the price for ages!

I've tried and sent back two Damson Madder ones. A cropped navy tartan which was WAY too quirky. Once I got "Per Una" in my head I couldn't get it out. Massive pink DM on the front which made DH go "alright Danger Mouse". And the Logan in Forest which was well constructed and really waterproof but was more of an army green IRL, which I can't stand, and I thought looked very boring and basic.

Had a Stutterheim Mosebacke for 8 years now and it's still going. It is reliable but it's very rubbery (this is the whole point, I realise) and I'd like something more breathable. Rains ones seem similar.

I'm no help.

I think I'd like a 1970s child's snorkel parka?

I like a waterproof trench coat with a hood but it's a very rare beast. These are both just over budget but under £200

I've tried this Seasalt one on and liked it. (Sorry if it's already been posted up-page but I couldn't get the link to work)
https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/penweathers-waterproof-organic-cotton-trench-coat

M&s Jaeger (not seen):
https://www.marksandspencer.com/twill-hooded-raincoat/p/clp60690334?color=CAMEL

And then at £249 but they do offers sometimes, Protected Species. H ood is detachable. I've had a knee length version of this for at least 8 years (They don't do that length any more):

I’ve got that M&S Jaeger one in black. I love it but the DC make Darth Vader jokes when I wear it!

I have this one from Stutterheim, very waterproof, relatively light, but a little stiff! https://stutterheim.com/women/jackets/raincoats/mosebacke-patch-matte-mystic-blue

My daughter has this protected species one, lovely soft flowing fabric, very waterproof, but I found the collar a bit chunky for me, looks great on her!

I LOVE this protected species one - but is double my budget! Argh!

I also have the Lululemon Rain Rebel in a spring green (from a few years ago). It's a great all round jacket. Bought in my regular size, it has room for a cardigan or light fleece, so it can be used well into cooler weather.

I also really like their Always Effortless Classic Fit. I tried it on in the off-white and it is very chic, but I had to talk myself out of another spring jacket since I already have a few! This one is marked water resistant but not water proof; I guess it depends on how long you are outdoors in the rain.

As for going long or short, how do you wear your jackets? Dog walking in the countryside would need longer waterproof, but for commuting a shorter one will do, especially if you carry an umbrella as well.

I'm going to have to find the money for one. They are so gorgeous and come in tall sizes! I can have a coat that really fits!! But classic trench in black or the beautiful green patterned fit and flare?!
