Matchy matchy?

I keep seeing posts about which items of clothing and accessories should match, and should not. But I’m still confused!

Got a posh wedding in the summer - hats mandatory.

So, what should the hat match with? Shoes and bag? Just shoes? Just bag?

(I actually haven’t decided on the dress yet, but let’s assume black and white for the purpose of this matchy matchy thing)

If it was me, I'd match 2 of the 3

FlapperFlamingo · 09/03/2026 17:42

I'd try to match the hat with the dress, then have contrasting shoes and bag.

Two out of three is OK, financially. But not if I have to buy a bag, too.
Would matching hat and shoes be ok?

It depends on the dress and colours. Say navy dress with fuchsia hat and bag I’d then wear pale sandals.

what style dresses and hats have you been looking at?

Do you have a bag already you want to use? If so what style and colour. I’d start with that in this case.

I have about 100 bags 😂 All colours, just not small. I feel a big bag would be a bit too functional for a wedding. Ideally, I’d use my (black) Chanel clutch, as it deserves an outing after many years.

I have no shoes, though. definitely need to buy shoes. Hate shoes.

If I need to, I could get a small, cheapish bag. And the hat shopping will be fun.

Neutral coloured dress, I expect - haven’t decided yet.
I was thinking to go for red hat and shoes, but see that may be the wrong matchy style.
Loathe shoe shopping but it has to be done! I’ve got some big events later in the year so need to up my style, anyway.

Oh, and I haven’t even been hat shopping yet! Tried a selection of the few styles available at John Lewis last month, so I know what suits and what doesn’t (yikes!) but I need to find an actual hat shop sometime.

You have a Chanel clutch bag, definitely use that. Red hat and shoes sounds lovely (red and black are my fav colours so I would say that).

I’ve worn hats only a few times so hard to get one to suit, well I think it is. I am trying to remember what matched with what last time I wore one :)))) I think I had black hat, with a band of colour on it with black sandals so two matching. And then I already owned a vintage floral beaded clutch bag……I have no idea where that’s gone, will have a hunt in my wardrobe for that tomorrow.

The last big wedding i went to, the only women wearing hats were MoB and MoG.

Hats are very much still in in some circles.

My niece is in a ‘country posh’ set and goes to a lot of weddings due to age group.

Every photo I see most of the ladies are wearing something on their heads, whether hat headband etc.

Thank you. I used to wear hats all the time in my teens and 20s, so I’m no stranger to them. This is the part I’m most excited about!
