70s party outfit

I'm going to a 70s theme party soon. I don't want to go all out, but I do want to fit with the 70s theme. I've bought this jumpsuit. Does it loosely fit the brief? What accessories/shoes/hair would work? I've got shoulder length straight hair which does not hold a curl.

Big platforms and jazz it up a bit with a belt and don’t forget make up. Think David Bowie or Marc Bolan. Add a floppy hat. Everyone will channel ABBA.

I’m old enough to remember the 70s. That outfit is not really 70s style. Possibly the shape, but u think legs would have been more flared, cleavage maybe deeper. Probably halter neck or a long pointy collar. Chunky metal work too - zips, belt buckle. But mostly, the colour is all wrong. 70s clothes were bright and patterned! Maybe people did wear black outside work/funerals/court, but not typically.

The shoes also don’t look right. You need stacked heels or wedges. Wooden. Tan leather or bright patent. Chunky metalwork again.

it’s a lovely outfit, but it doesn’t even whisper 70s to me. It screams early 2000s.

Style was quite tribal:
Hippy style - loon pants (wide flared cotton trousers) and Indian print smocks or tie dyed T shirts. Laura Ashley dresses, skinhead Tonic suits, Oxford bags (wide leg trousers) and, remember, Punk also emerged in the 70s. You wouldn't have found these different looks at the same party in the 70s. Pick a style.

dudsville · 08/03/2026 08:52

I agree with the last few posters. This jumpsuit isn't really 70s. Google for examples and see what style attracts you.

I think I can remember Abba (the men as well as Agnetha and Anni-Frid) wearing jumpsuits occasionally. ( Were they called 'cat suits' at the time?) Likewise male glam rock stars, except they'd be metallic or leopard print and open down to the navel. I don't think they were a huge trend and, when they were worn, they were far tighter fitting, more extreme and less, well.... tasteful than yours is, op. It depends how authentic you want to be.

I can remember those outfits on TOTP but never saw anyone dressed like that in real life 🤣.

ginasevern · 08/03/2026 13:56

Jump suits weren't really a thing in the 70's (except for ABBA!). You'd be better off getting some flared jeans, an Indian or gypsy print top and some platform shoes. Also, lots of bangles on your wrists, rings on your fingers and large hoop earings (jewellery would be silver, not gold). You can just leave your hair long and straight with that look.

OhDear111 · 08/03/2026 14:04

David Bowie wore jump suits. The point about a party is —— dressing up! You don’t heve to copy high street 70s. You can go glam rock with the jump suit! Easy! No one will care that only a few wore them in the 70s. We all saw them on stage!

MrsHaroldWilson · 08/03/2026 14:16

Oooh, go online and find a true vintage dress! So many beautiful vintage dresses out there, it would be a crime to wear that out-of-period and unexciting jump suit!

That was me in 1973.

And me Captain! I was 16. That's how I definitely know what 70's gear to wear.

Jewellery might be chunky wooden type stuff.
platform shoes for sure.
Later 70s ‘gypsy’ skirts and dresses … ah to be young again, I loved thoseSmile

Oh, I do envy people who were adults or teenagers in the 70s! I was too young in the 70s to wear anything other than what my mum bought for me.

Definitely go for gold or metallic stripe heels and wide metallic belt, you can get these in vintage shops or eBay/vinted. Hair should be Farrah Fawcett waves.

My aunt was a teenage model in 1970 onwards. Her modelling career shows a wide range of outfits though!

Definitely bright and patterned. My aunt wore red hot pants and a short striped top for a modelling assignment with Freddie Mercury and you also had gypsy style clothes with floppy wide hats and cheesecloth.

Wow, she must have great memories! Has she kept her portfolio - it would be wonderful to look back on and show her younger relatives?

EscapadeVelocity · 08/03/2026 17:53

I’m not sure black existed in the 70s …

As everyone has indicated, @Namechange4843Y, you need to have the word psychedelic in your head when putting your outfit together.

Yes my mum has her modelling card and a magazine when she modelled with Freddie Mercury.

Thanks everyone. All taken on board. I've been round the charity shops today and gone way outside my comfort zone, but I think I have an outfit. White flares, a hideous orange, red and yellow patterned top and some extraordinary orange tan fake croc high platform boots. Does that sound more like it?

Yes much better. Do you have photos?

I was born late 1979, so my 70s outfits were babygros!
