Hi

My son gets married late summer this year. Never mind dilemmas over my own outfit, Mum is already fretting that I haven't taken her shopping yet. What shops would you go to? Mum is 85 years old, 5ft 1 size 14-16, hates shopping and getting dressed up, but will want something smart without spending a fortune. I thought Phase Eight might be a possibility, any other ideas?

Oh my goodness I am so sorry, I didn't expect such an amazing response and have been stupidly busy. I need to read back through properly.

She doesn't have anything suitable and despite hating shopping she wants something new. It might be possible to do some online shopping with your suggestions. You have given me some brand names I haven't heard of.

We are 25 miles away from York but she can't walk far so I need to plan where we go carefully.

In York I’d take her to Fenwicks. If she can’t find anything there I’d be astonished.

Just because she is 5 ft 1 doesn't mean petite will work. I am 5ft but always found petite ranges too short on the legs

Maybe book a personal shopper appointment at Fenwicks. I don’t know the York branch but my local branch has a good selection of brands and I’d be fairly confident of them finding a new outfit for my very elderly mum if she needed one (although these days she’s almost always in Toast Gabi trousers and M&S acrylic jumpers or T shirts depending on the time of year).
