Is it just me - sizing issue

I'm 5 foot 5, 10 stone, size 12 as a rule. I'm also pear shaped so not exactly snake hipped but small waist.
Every single pair of trousers I've bought recently I['ve had to return for a size 10, it's beyond tedious having to send all this stuff back all the time.
I bought these track bottoms from Marks and they are massive, 4 inches too long but marked regular, enormous round the waist and ridiculously baggy everywhere else.
I've never been a size 10 in my life but I'm now wearing a 10. I can't try anything on in a shop because I don't live near any major retailers. Anyone else having sizing problems.

It does seem strange as 12s have previously fitted you and now don’t.

However, I’ve recently lost 2 stone. I was previously a size 14 (probably verging on 16 on the bottom).

I am 5 ft 6 and am now 10 stone 7 and a size 12.

I think a 10 sounds reasonable for you.

what are your hips and waist measurement

my hips are 39 inches, waist 28 and I’d say I’m a comfortable 12.

SilenceInside · 02/03/2026 11:28

Were the M&S trousers significantly different in measurements to what would be expected given their size guide for size 12 regular length?

Gettingbysomehow · 02/03/2026 11:29

i haven't got a tape measure in the house but I've been 10 stone for 6 months and weighed myself this morning.

Mind you I bought a Tu top in a 10 recently as my top half is a 10 and had to send it back for a 12. I don't think sizing is terribly reliable and more. I'll have to get myself a tape measure I think.

Well, yes! I have the tape measure right beside me whenever I’m browsing clothes sites. Brands don’t confer on sizing.

I currently weigh more than you and while some of my size 10 skirts are a struggle to get into now, I recently bought a size 10 dress that might as well be an 18; it’s absolutely huge.

So you do need to scrupulously check the website sizing details and garment measurements and compare them to things you already own, and against your own measurements. Every time.

mondaytosunday · 02/03/2026 12:49

At 10 stone 10 at 5’ 11” I was a 10 in Monsoon, a 12 in Long Tall Sally and 12-14 at H&M. A 10-12 at M&S. Sometimes with same brands I could be 10, 12 or 14! I’ve never had an issue with trousers being too long! Joggers are fairly generously sized as they are supposed to be easy wear, and perhaps the length was an anomaly.
You just need to keep trying on and don’t get too hung up on the label. Frustrating I know! Just wish I was that size now….😟

SherbetDipDap · 02/03/2026 12:56

I’m 5’6, around 11.5 stone and can be anything for a 10 to a 16.

My measurements are 38-28-41. Even when I look at the size guide (in which I am invariably in a different section for every measurement) things don’t fit.

BillieWiper · 02/03/2026 13:00

I find sizing hard. No bra fits me. I have really wide shoulders but no waist, short torso, small hips and skinny legs. I can wear a 6 in some things and need a 12 in others?! You'd think I was some kind of out of proportion freak?!

Everyone is a different shape and clothes sizing varies so much it's just like they want you to buy loads of things that don't fit and not be arsed to return them?!

DoingTheBridgertonDancesInTheKitchen · 02/03/2026 13:03

I have those joggers in the navy and ecru. I’m usually a 10/12 and I had to have a 10 in the navy and a 8 in the ecru. 🤷🏻‍♀️

DancingNotDrowning · 02/03/2026 13:08

Marks and Spencer are generous with their sizing - and have got noticeably more so in the past 6mths.

I’ve worn a 10 from there for a long time. Now I’m an 8. I haven’t lost weight.

FirstDayonthePlanet · 02/03/2026 21:04

I’m generally a size 12 but more often than not have to buy size 10 at M&S, particularly jeans. As a PP said I do think their sizing is bigger than the rest of the high street.
annoyingly not absolutely everything so sometimes I order a 10 and it fits like a ten so is too small.

Gettingbysomehow · 02/03/2026 23:58

Ive sent them back and have a size 10 coming tomorrow. They ran out of those so I got the green stripe ones which are just as nice. I wanted the Baukjen ones but my bank account doesnt.
