I need some help please

If your 5ft 8/9 and weigh 10st to 11st (I’m 10st 10) what clothing size do you wear?

I’ve lost a significant amount of weight and went clothes shopping properly in actual shops to work out what size I am, in one shop I tried on so many different sizes and nothing fitted right, one shop a I couldn’t get into a size 16 yet a size 14 top was massive, surely I should be a comfortable 12 or 14? Zara was incredibly inconsistent and make me feel like I was still too big to wear their clothes (need some for work)

I know a lot depends on body shape which I am still trying to work out but I’m at a loss and it’s made me incredibly nervous about shopping again

I'm a size 10. Towards the top I find a size 10 tight particularly in jeans. I wear medium in Zara. Towards the bottom of that range I'd be a size 8 in tops or small.

I'm currently around 67kg which is high for me (although perhaps the new norm since menopause). I am not particularly large busted though and straight up and down. Also pretty well toned.

ilikeeggs · 27/02/2026 06:01

I’m 5ft 8.5 and 10st 11lbs and I’m a size 12. Sometimes I can squeeze into a size 10 top or dress.

simpledeer · 27/02/2026 06:01

Sizing is completely random, even in the same shop. Sometimes even with the same item in different colours! I always find black jeans come up smaller than regular denim.

I am 5ft 4 and weigh 8 stone 2. I have clothes in my current “rotation” from size 16 to size 6. They all fit.

So my advice is not to get hung up on clothes sizes at all.

So I should be a 12 to 14

But you said youve lost significant amount of weight, so do you have excess skin? It can make a difference. Im 5ft 5, lost 10 stone, weigh 10st 12lb. I have lots of excess skin. Im 12 on bottom, 14 on top. Small in some items, large in others - same shop. Shouldn't be like this but so many variables at play here

notatinydancer · 27/02/2026 06:09

5ft 9. 10.10 stone. Depends on the shop and style. I tried a lot on today. Anything from a 10 to a 14.

NotMyNose · 27/02/2026 06:22

I'm the same height. When I was your weight I was a 8-10 in today's sizes. I'm now 2 stone heavier and 12 in Oliver Bonas and Tu, medium in Lucy and yak, Large in Uniqlo, 16 in H&M.. I tend to pick up 14 as a starting point everywhere else. Sizing is bollocks, basically!

Body shape dictates most of it. For me, things have to accommodate my chest and I only suit fitted high waists. I'll either check measurement charts or ask for measurements on vinted. Or in shops, hold a waistband against my waist or a shirt over my chest to get a vague idea before trying on.

I seriously recommend getting a tape measure and making friends with your body shape to demystify the process.

Interesting thread.

In my young days l was 9 1/2 stone and 5ft 8. I was a14

MinnieMountain · 27/02/2026 06:31

5ft 10 and 10 stone. I'm generally size 10. Boden and M&S I'm size 8.

EvilNextDoor · 27/02/2026 08:32

@Wholenutislife not really my arms are very wobbly and the a bit at the top of my thighs

A large 12 - size 14 never fits on shoulders/waist and is always a bit loose.

RedRiverShore6 · 27/02/2026 08:40

I bought a pair of straight cords in M&S sale yesterday , 14L, which is what I expected to be. People just carry their weight in different places so clothes size will be different. I have always had a thigh gap not because I'm thin, I'm not, just that is my bone structure, I also have a large ribcage which means I need a size 36 bra and sometimes look like I have two sets of boobs in tight clothes.

birdpoo · 27/02/2026 08:43

5 ft 9.5 and 9 st 10 - size 6-8 depending on brand

RedRiverShore6 · 27/02/2026 08:46

Zara probably isn't the best shop to go in to see what size you are, their sizing is odd at the best of times.

RedRiverShore6 · 27/02/2026 08:49

I'm sure I am probably about L or XL in Zara so don't let it put you off if you were XL in some things

CornishPorsche · 27/02/2026 08:49

I'm the same height as you and when I was 11 stone I wore a size 10-12. I'm currently 15 stone and a size 16-18 after 7 stone weightloss with another 4 stone to go!

I think you're looking at clothes that are far too big.

ThisJadeBear · 27/02/2026 08:52

drusilla49 · 26/02/2026 22:03

I’m 5’ 8” and about 10 stone 4. Usually. 10 on top, but I have a narrow ribcage and back. Sometimes a 12 bottom half.

I am the same height and weight… well I used to.
Post menopause I’m 16 top and 14 on the bottom.
Same on the scales but the change has been huge. Bust size gone from 32 to 38.

MissAnthr0pe · 27/02/2026 08:55

5'10 and 67kg (~10 st 8)

It depends on the shop and your chest/waist size. I usually try on 3 sizes of the same item of clothing (10, 12, 14 or S, M, L) and buy whichever hangs best on my frame.

lljkk · 27/02/2026 08:56

I'm 5'7.5" nowadays, I think?
About 62 kg.
Size 12 for bottoms & size 14-16 for tops most typically, Men's medium in tops. I like a looser fit and length is a chronic issue, I sometimes joke that I'm under-fat because trousers that fit my hips/waist are too often short.

Disturbia81 · 27/02/2026 08:58

5ft 7
Size 10/small in everything
10 stone 10lbs

Tobleroneswillbemyundoing · 27/02/2026 09:02

I'm 5'8" and even when I was just over 10st, I was a 12 in jeans (I carry the weight on my hips and thighs).
I'm just under 12st now and although I still fit my size 12 dresses, my size 14 jeans are too tight 😏

Wildviolet · 27/02/2026 09:16

I think Zara is very unreliable size wise.
I read an article in The Guardian a while ago where the reporter did random size tests on various shops and Zara came out pretty much worst having huge variance both when compared to other brands and also just within their own products.

brendaschmenda · 27/02/2026 09:21

I find these threads so interesting.

Im shorter than you so possibly not a lot of help, but I am 5 ft 6.5, 10 stone 7 and I think I am a size 12.

I have wide hips and a small chest so sometimes a 10 on top.

like you, I have recently lost weight, I have lost 2 stone.

I think I was a 14 before (possibly sometimes a 12 on top) but I’m now realising that realistically I was probably a 16 on bottom.

ive lost 2 stone and find it hard to believe I’ve only dropped one dress size, but that’s just how it is.

That was me, back in the '70s. I think that the same size nowadays would be a 12 or even 10.

Pyjamatimenow · 27/02/2026 09:23

5ft 10 and 10st 10 size 8. Not sure how

Snoopypie · 27/02/2026 09:30

5ft9 -11st 5 and go between a 16 and 14, big boobs and big tummy when my adenomyosis flares up. I do prefer lose clothing though.
