Merino base layers?

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 25/02/2026 21:23

I have various heat tech tops but they all hold onto body odour and have got a bit pongy. I'd like to eventually swap them out for thin merino base layers but I'm on a budget... Any recommendations please?

Cos do them

2026Y · 25/02/2026 21:28

Not what you asked but soak in hot water and bio powder should get rid of the smell. Normal temp washes and non bio powder don’t kill all the bacteria in my experience.

Uniqlo HEATTECH Extra Warm Cashmere Blend is good, softer and breathable. Maybe on sale in stores as the season is changing.

I have about 6 of these and they are by far the warmest thermals I’ve ever had.
And they don’t go smelly, are really reasonable, wash and wear exceptionally well.

Are they short? I find the usual uniqlo tops rise up all the time

TheChosenTwo · 25/02/2026 21:57

@Nitgel i haven’t found them to be short in the body, I’m 5’7 and they just get tucked into my trousers or tights 😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/02/2026 22:09

Isobaa fo excellent merino tops, and have great sales.

Suburbanqueen · 25/02/2026 22:11

Vinted?

Sheepskinjumper · 25/02/2026 22:21

Men’s second hand merino jumpers. I’m wearing a Kronstadt one right now, it was £4 on vinted and it’s soooo toasty. I buy them with holes or damage too, because they go under stuff and nobody sees.

RockaLock · 25/02/2026 22:21

Definitely the uniqlo mentioned above!

I find they are plenty long enough in the body, and don’t seem to ride up at all.

MyThreeWords · 25/02/2026 22:26

If you spend money on merino clothing, consider getting moth repellent for your wardrobe. Bastard moth larvae seem to love scoffing holes in merino.

WhiskyandWater · 26/02/2026 08:10

Icebreaker merino is amazing, different merino count for higher or lower levels of warmth. Make sure to get 100% merino as they’ve now done a mixed range. It’s much much warmer than Cos (which I also love for the office).

massistar · 26/02/2026 10:15

Sports Pursuit has offers on Isobaa merino tops at the moment. I use them for skiing, they’re fab. Lovely and soft.

biedrona · 26/02/2026 10:48

I second icebreaker. Pricey but washes well and lasts a long time (not just one season)

biedrona · 26/02/2026 10:48

Also, uniqlo heattech are not merino

redfishcat · 26/02/2026 10:59

Mountain warehouse merino is cheap and warm and long enough for proper tucking in

EverythingIsComputer · 26/02/2026 11:11

I don’t find my Uniqlo ones as good as my merino ones from isobaa or peak performance. They have good sales on Sports Pursuit.

puppyparent · 26/02/2026 12:48

Shop for merino wool base layers after the ski season has ended - there’ll be lots on sale

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 26/02/2026 13:57

Not what you asked but I find using Halo sports wash is as good at getting BO out of synthetic mix clothes that have to be washed at 30 degrees as it is as getting stink out of gym kits.
