Just that really, do you think this dress is ok for a Christening in a few weeks and a wedding at the end of May?
I'm not quite 3 months post partum yet so like that it's a bit flowy and got some extra material around the stomach area.
Opinions please 😊

It is ageist.

Ok. It’s old fashioned and dated which is why my mum would choose it now. It will be similar to styles she’s been wearing for 20/30 years.

I don’t think it’s in any way stylish. If that doesn’t matter to you then fine but the OP asked.

I thought Remus and SparDay were being unnecessarily harsh but looking at it again it's too sparkly and fussy for the christening and more importantly JJ's House isn't a brand I'd ever recommend to anyone for anything.

What about Zara?

The "trench dress" looks very plain but is beautifully constructed and you could dress it up with lots of bracelets and big earrings. It would do for graduation also.

Edited

Maybe I’m just a horrible person but I’m struggling to understand how, ‘Sorry but I don’t like it and agree with PP that it is old fashioned’ is unnecessarily harsh. I thought I was being very polite!

I like that gingham dress, but think it’s probably too casual for all three events. Don’t like the others, but the trench dress in a nicer colour could be good - it’s a nice shape.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/02/2026 21:04

The more I look at the original dress though, the more I imagine Queen Camilla in it.

Like Spar I'm twice the OP's age and I wouldn't go anywhere near that dress. What is ageist is assuming it's old fashioned and dated but it'll be fine for old women.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/02/2026 21:06

I think it’s lovely. Regarding the christening, is it a church family? Regular church goers, or just occasional? If it’s a regular church family they may well be a bit more casual but no one is going to mind you being on the over smart side. The families who look like weddings tend to be more occasional church goers.

I think with your colouring that’s a stunning dress that will work for all your occasions.

I don’t think it would be fine for an older woman and didn’t say that. I said my mum and my aunties would probably choose it or similar. You don’t know how old I am.

You aren't usually as forthright.! Plus I didn't look properly at the dress, but on a second look I agree with you.

girljulian · 23/02/2026 21:09

I think it's lovely! I'm your age OP and I'd definitely wear this.

What relevance does the fact your mother and aunts would like it have? There's no point in mentioning them beyond making the point it's a dress for women at least a generation older than you.

Fucking hell, you’re tiring. My point, clearly badly made, is that the style is dated and something my mother and peers often still choose as it was a style they’ve worn for a long time.

I don’t care if you agree with me because it was an opinion based on my own experience.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/02/2026 19:40

That’s nice but I don’t consider it high fashion either.

It’s drab, I’d buy it as a nondescript everyday work dress and I’m almost 50.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/02/2026 21:25

I don’t know a single person who would wear it, of any age.

Brightlittlecanary · 23/02/2026 21:26

Op I’m 2 decades older and I’d not wear that it’s really dated and old fashioned.

Your point was badly made. Had you said "because they're stuck in the past/ lack confidence" or similar then you would have had a relevant point.

As Spar said the assumption that older women lose all sense of style or interest in clothes is really, really annoying.

PregnantPumpkin · 23/02/2026 21:41

Ok is this any better? I do like Lipsy stuff and used to wear it quite a lot although nowadays I'm usually in wellies, leggings and a rain coat 😂 I really like 60's style clothing and decor so perhaps subconsciously that's why I was drawn to that original dress as apparently it's old fashioned 😂

I like it a lot, but I wonder if you'll want long sleeves in May?

It was a joke because I don’t like the dress. Think I might log off!

Ag right! So used to all the sniping on here that I totally missed the joke!

As so often on these threads, for me, the "helpful" suggestions are not as good as the OP's original choice.

Hmmm not sure I’d consider that a positive,..😄

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/02/2026 22:10

These are quite nice.

Carousella · 23/02/2026 22:31

The dress is pretty but I’m more than double your age and I wouldn’t wear it. Typing wedding guest dresses into John Lewis there’s so much to choose from if you’re interested.
