Want colour but no foundation

Hi wonder if anyone can help. I'm real pale and like to have a bit of colour but I don't want to wear any foundation after trying so many and they constantly looking dry and ageing, plus don't want the hassle. I have tried tinted moisturiser and sun cream but they do nothing, barely any colour at all. I've tried ELF halo glow which I like but that's a bit too much colour. Also tried tanning drops/mist but looks awful. Any ideas what I can do/use? I'm nearly 40 so just want a simple routine and not looking pale and ill. I did use cc cream and blusher this morning which didn't look too bad (I can get quite red)

I've started just wearing a bit of concealer under the eyes, bronzer all over (I'm very pale so just a bit, I don't look orange), and a bit of blush.
I also have some tropic tanning drops I mix with a bit of moisturiser, I do that sometimes just to take the bluey/white pale edge off! Just a tiny amount is all that's needed.

@User415373 what bronzer do you wear please? I've tried but it always looks way too dark, I can't ever seem to put it on nicely

I don’t wear foundation but always bronzer.

Go to a dept store with make up counters & get some tested on you.

From memory Hourglass does a subtle one.

@sunshinedaises currently Barry M heatwave. The trick is to use a large fluffy brush and not too much product, give it a good tap off so there's no excess. Very lightly swish it around including jawline and down the neck. You can always add more.
I do mine all over to start then add a bit more to forehead and cheeks.

I'm very pale and use Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Hue Drops. They give just enough colour to stop me looking cadaverous in the winter. You can use half a pump and mix into your moisturiser or SPF if you want an even more subtle effect.

Glossier skin tint or jones road balm . Both very minimal pigment / coverage but still even out the skin without being too glowy !

lindyloo57 · 18/02/2026 16:05

@User415373 hi, which colour do you use, I see Barry m does 3 colours

User415373 · 18/02/2026 16:11

@lindyloo57 the lightest one, think it's just called 'light'

Erborian do a dull colour corrector - it’s in a purple tube. It does give me a lovely glow. Ilia skin tint serum also gives a nice bright effect.

I'd say you need to try some more foundations. I'm really pale but wear foundation every day even at home or I look awful!

Are you prepping your skin beforehand?
I use a serum first, then a moisturiser, then sun block (Mineral based lotion).
I allow about 10-15 mins for them all to sink in before using foundation.

Your foundation should not look dry at 40 - you're still very young!

There are loads that are really light - maybe one of the stick sort which you can apply where needed and blend really well.

Like Bobbi Brown.
Lancome?
LOreal True Match ( only £10-ish)
Boots No 7- lots of foundations to try.

Get a make-over at the counters and ask for samples to try at home.

You need Clinique Bronzing Gelee. Great product. I mix it in with moisturiser and it gives a lovely glow for a no-make up look. Colour with no coverage. You can also use it as a conventional bronzer if you just want colour where the sun would hit naturally. It does take some practise to get the ratio of bronzer to moisturiser right but it blends out well regardless.

Origins Vitazing is my go to … adapts to your skin tone and gives a lightly covered glow with 15SPF.

Have you tried garnier summer body gradual tan? It’s honestly amazing, if you get the light one it works after applying each day after about 2/3 days or the dark 1/2 days, looks so natural I always get asked if I’ve been away and is so easy to apply after my shower in the evening I’m really pale and find this is the only thing that works that isn’t high maintenance
