The eternal search for a long sleeved white t shirt for layering continues…

Anyone else notice that almost all round neck jumpers, for both men and women, are advertised by retailers with a white long sleeved crew neck top peeping out? But do you think the same retailers sell a suitable white long sleeved crew neck top? No they do not! No amount of ‘shop the look’ or ‘we think you’ll love’ leads to one.

I have several said tops but none of them are quite right. The necks aren’t quite high enough to poke out the top, the sleeves aren’t long enough to poke out the arms of my jumpers, the length isn’t enough to peep out the bottom (or it’s too long and over-peeps), the material isn’t right etc etc.

I have quite specific requirements. It has to be thin enough for layering, and close fitting enough to not add bulk. It has to have nice long sleeves. Most importantly the neck has to be a proper CREW NECK, and not advertised as crew neck that turns out on closer inspection to be a scoop, boat or slash neck. If anyone has bought a top that fits all these requirements and comes in a size 12 please would you share it.

I’ve added a picture of one that looks perfect for reference but of course it’s only available in a 20 or 22.

Thank you @PrepossessingPenelope, that does look quite promising although I’m not convinced on the neck. Bit expensive for layering too but if it was perfect I might buy it. I will try to get to an M&S to try one on!

Oh and Jigsaw OP, I have their cotton long sleeved t shirts in other colours but they will come in white. Sadly Jigsaw's version is even more expensive.

I have this same problem as I am a big fan of the layered look with a touch of white under top showing. Wonder if any of those faux skins tops you know that slinky material (Primark, Zara, Sainsbury’s) would work but I can’t comment on the neck height.

canyon2000 · 14/02/2026 14:57

I saw someone on Instagram say to wear your white top the wrong way round as the back is higher than the front. I've yet to try this but it might work!

EstherGreenwood63 · 14/02/2026 15:06

@canyon2000 is correct.

Willowskyblue · 14/02/2026 15:35

Uniqlo have the right t shirts for this.

Uniqlo is where to go. I have their Cashmere heat tech long sleeve crew necks for this purpose - both black and white.

CoastalCalm · 14/02/2026 16:49

Matalan for me or M&S - Matalan do long sleeve for £4 so a couple of times a year I refresh my black and white ones and the old ones go in the rag bag

Noeggsontoast · 14/02/2026 16:52

I just wear my top back to front.

Comefromaway · 14/02/2026 16:54

Uniqglo

Papyrophile · 14/02/2026 16:56

I have one from Arket that is perfect, but I bought it 18 months ago. Otherwise, I'd start at Uniqlo.

Papyrophile · 14/02/2026 16:59

IRIS Signature Long-Sleeve T-Shirt – White – ARKET GB This seems to be the current version.

paddleboardingmum · 14/02/2026 18:48

Why oh why doesn't anyone make good ones of these? I used to have some from Gap body and they were stretchy and ideal. Can only find that thick non stretchy too short slightly scoop neck ones now. I'm sure if we could get them loads would buy. Closest I have found is Primark.

fiorentina · 14/02/2026 19:34

Mine are from Uniqlo, Arket or Hush. They all work well under jumpers.

Papyrophile · 14/02/2026 19:57

I usually start with Uniqlo, especially for anything I want in white, black or navy. Their colours are usually hideous, sometimes (rarely) wonderful, but I mostly buy very neutral clothes and spend more on accessories.

minnowonthesay · 15/02/2026 07:27

The Primark heat IQ tops are great, the sleeves are long because they have thumb holes in should you wish to use them. It comes in white, I’ve posted the brown below, so you can see the detail. Again, wear back to front to get the higher neck.

ive got lots of white tshirts… but i have to wear them back to front to achieve the “bit of tshirt showing above the jumper neckline” look.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 15/02/2026 18:03

Uniqlo - I've tried most brands and prefer Uniqlo for quality, how well they wash and wear.

Wonkypictureframes · 15/02/2026 19:05

I don't understand the back to front thing. Can't you see the stitching where the label is? I've never found a t shirt that looks as neat at the back of the neck as it does at the front.

OP - I'm on the same search as you

Didimum · 15/02/2026 19:09

I have loads of these from ASOS.
