Stepmother of groom outfit needed

mrsmogg · 13/02/2026 21:48

I feel like I am going round in circles trying to find the right look so hoping for some inspiration!
Summer wedding , church then marquee at the family home. Dress code is morning suits preferred so I need a hat too.

I am 40, size 10, 5'3 so would prefer midi length but I will get the dress tailored. Not yellow. I am brunette and fairly pale, jewel colours suit me. Would like something classy and contemporary, bonus points if I can wear it again for the races etc. budget up to £1000, would prefer to spend less and happy to buy on vinted etc as well.

Which Aje one? I think I posted four!!

The wave one

SeekingSchoolThoughts · 15/02/2026 07:15

Also OP - I think you should run any choice past the B&G before you commit. It’s their day and they can give you a steer on anything you might need to know but don’t. They won’t mind being asked?

Acuppateasavestheworld · 15/02/2026 07:30

I like this one.

Moveoverdarlin · 14/02/2026 21:22

The OP is a size 10 and 40 and can spend a grand on a dress. Jesus, Hobbs, Phase Eight and LK Bennett are what I would recommend to 80 year olds. John Charles is also very very traditional for MOB outfits.

Shes the same age and shape as Lady Gaga, not Nora Batty.

Totally agree. Phase 8 is the bog standard answer on every wedding thread.

Also, the OP is 5ft 3, none of those patterned or floral dresses or those with asymmetric hemlines will work if she’s got to have it taken up to fit. The body length can be too long as well so it sits in the wrong place.

Also gorgeous

DancingNotDrowning · 15/02/2026 08:20

This is fab - I think the no green is a MN thing.

i have the Isabelle Marant dress you linked in a other colour way - it’s beautiful and very flattering. I’m a big fan.

Well to my eyes Solace London is awful, cliché outdated "glam" and not right for a wedding.

Edited

You’re right, Phaeds. Attending a wedding looking like a convict from an Australian penal colony is much more appropriate.

What is your problem?

I said earlier on I didn't like some of the dresses suggested. Other people said they didn't like other dresses. Fine, no issue with that. We can't all like the same.

But why do you have to weigh in with your sneering "funny" comments? The dresses you suggested to my eyes are try hard, obvious and hideous. I clicked on the link and would have just skimmed over them and thought "yuk", but as you were so nasty you got my thoughts on them.

Over budget & not a jewel colour - but rather fabulous ...

https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/magnifico-zooflora-plac%C3%A9e-dress-000862897.html

Love that one, all of your suggestions are lovely. I really like dresses with bows or buttons at the back.

Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala · 15/02/2026 09:45

That dress is gorgeous but as someone who is 5ft 2, it wouldn’t work as you can’t have it taken up.

Striking doesn't mean brash - & certainly not crass?

I'd agree with your other points & would also go for block colour personally - but I don't think patterns have to be ruled out.

It is going to be a "fashiony" wedding though, so I don't see why the OP can't meet the criteria of striking AND classic AND with a fashionable edge - all without outshining the MoB or the bride ...!

The fashionable edge part of that is, however, not a strong point of Kate/Catherine Middleton's outfits (assuming that's who you meant).

It's obvious from your suggestions , if you have a reasonable budget that the starting point is trawl through Liberty, Net-a-Porter and MyTheresa- not Hobbs and the usual suspects.Fantastic selection (apart from the Roland Mouret one - which looks oddly old fashioned compared to the others)

Striking does not mean crass.

Oh stop being so disingenuous. You’ve been spewing bile all over S&B under various names for years yet you’re rattled by a couple of silly comments.

No. I've said I don't like things. I don't say the type of comments you are making.

gototogo · 15/02/2026 10:16

I would say op and its just a thought, you have a generous budget and you get the impression it will be a fashionably dressed wedding but assuming the mothers of the bride and groom will be there please don’t upstage them in a far more expensive and high fashion outfit, you will be setting yourself and the marrying couple up for trouble. If the two mums are also wearing expensive outfits of their choice then all is great, it’s just as the stepmum, which i am and my dsd is planning her wedding, we walk a tightrope between being part of their lives but understanding it’s really important for the 2 women that gave birth. (Obviously if they unfortunately are no longer with us this doesn’t apply). I do know a couple who had this issue, stepmum dressed totally ott huge hat, bright colours and stood out totally with “who does she think she is” being muttered and an upset bride (it was her stepmum) because she also insisted sitting with her dad in said bright colours over shadowing her mum in Per Una standard wedding attire. Read the room basically op

Also, Karen Millen has some gorgeous dresses - and it's having a sale. Lovely shirt dresses too.

No green isn't just a Mumsnet thing, it's a traditional 'rule' from my 89 year old mum's era and before. I can't remember why, maybe as it's associated with jealousy.

Wasn’t green seen as unlucky

Wasn’t green seen as unlucky

By whom?

I've never heard or read of this, or the "can't wear red because it means you are a Jezebel who slept with the groom", anywhere except on MN.

It was considered bad luck as green dye often used arsenic. Obviously not a concern now.

LadyLapsang · 15/02/2026 11:00

Have you spoken to your future daughter-in-law, the mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom? I would suggest there is an unwritten rule that the mother-of-the-bride gets to choose / make her preferences first. I say that as a mother-of-the-groom.

stillavid · 15/02/2026 11:57

The only reference to green I have ever heard with regards to weddings is 'married in green, ashamed to be seen' - but obviously that only applies to the bride.

I do also think you may need tread a little carefully as a step mother - or not if everyone gets on delightfully well!

Her dresses have great tailoring, and the sales are pretty good price wise!

mrsmogg · 15/02/2026 12:09

Some of the assumptions on here 🙄

Yes, I've spoken with the bride and I know the details of MoB outfit, my budget (or more) is entirely appropriate. I read threads on here and its like some people think stepmothers should be made to turn up wearing a binbag 😂

Thanks for all the suggestions esp EleanorMc67 who seems to have nailed exactly what I'm looking for. Will wait another 6 weeks to see what's in stores and a good shout to prebook the fitting and alteration.
