Stepmother of groom outfit needed

mrsmogg · 13/02/2026 21:48

I feel like I am going round in circles trying to find the right look so hoping for some inspiration!
Summer wedding , church then marquee at the family home. Dress code is morning suits preferred so I need a hat too.

I am 40, size 10, 5'3 so would prefer midi length but I will get the dress tailored. Not yellow. I am brunette and fairly pale, jewel colours suit me. Would like something classy and contemporary, bonus points if I can wear it again for the races etc. budget up to £1000, would prefer to spend less and happy to buy on vinted etc as well.

The burgundy I linked to was just there to give a general feel. I love black in summer too though.

Yes I was responding to a pp saying burgundy and navy were terrible summer wedding choices rather than your choice of dress which I agree is lovely.

SP tend to brighten up their colour ways as summer approaches and I’d be surprised if they don’t put that dress out in some more colours in a couple of months

Are you trying to outshine the mother of the groom?

This is such a silly question!!!

What are you referring to as glam and architectural? Self Potrait? SP is bland and safe.

Go back and read what I said about SP. I’m clearly referring to Solace London which I linked in my first post.

Well I did and as I said it got masses of compliments.

Were the lights on?

Self Portrait have some beautiful dresses, although I don’t know how long they are.

Love that one. Trying to think of an excuse to buy it myself now. 😂

Grizelina · 14/02/2026 17:09

Have a look on the Facebook group pre-loved wedding and occasion outfits Uk for starters as this will give you a good idea of the various types of outfits available. As they’ve been worn by the seller usually, who is required to post photos and measurements, you get a realistic idea of what they look like.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/02/2026 17:11

Really not a fan of those jumpsuits, personally.

Goditsmemargaret · 14/02/2026 17:21

You're being so rude to people I want to hate this and sneer at you but unfortunately I think it's gorgeous.

How is it rude to say I think a dress is nice or not?

People can sneer at any link I post. I don’t give a shit. If I like something, I’ll wear it - as, I assume, will others on here whatever I, you or anybody else may think.

Bloody hell, style and beauty is like a war zone these days. It's all kicking off on at least one other s&b thread.
I just post a suggestion or two and then stop. Unless I love something someone else has posted then I might say so.
Do people really need to argue about whether stuff is nice or not? If @mrsmogg doesn't like my suggestions (she didn't) that's totally her perogative. I hope she gets something she loves, so the more suggestions the better.
Stop taking everything so personally, people!
P.S. This is not directed at any particular poster, it's just a general reflection. 😂

She’s 5ft 3 !

So? Just have it taken up.

Agreed. Even if you’ve personally designed and hand made an item that somebody else dislikes, why on earth would it matter that somebody else doesn’t love it?

I’m surprised they’re considered “old” my most stylish colleague who is a size 8 and in her 30s is often in Hobbs and everyone always comments on how put together she looks. I owned a lot of LK Bennett and Hobbs in my 30s and wore outfits from both to Ascot, weddings, and smart garden parties. So maybe it’s a more recent thing it’s now aimed at an older customer. Anyway, I hadn’t realised that the OP was looking for fashionable rather than classic as that only came out later in the thread.

You can be fashionable and classic at the same time.

I don’t own anything from Hobbs and tend to prefer French clothing lines to something like Hobbs. A Quick Look at their website and I could see how Hobbs could work for a conservative work environment but their dresses/wedding section looks like something a very British dressing 60 year old would wear. Obviously not bad but nothing spectacular.

sittingonabeach · 14/02/2026 15:28

Are you trying to outshine the mother of the groom?

That’s an odd question. Can’t she want to look nice, feel happy and confident in how she looks without it needing to be because she’s trying to “outshine” another woman?

DancingNotDrowning · 14/02/2026 19:42

When people post asking for advice or making suggestions it’s reasonable for other posters to provide feedback on the request/responses.

No one should care what a random poster thinks of their choices especially when you have no idea whether that poster is usually to be found head to toe in fleece and wet weather gear from Mountain Warehouse or Lycra and 4” heels from Lipsy.

sittingonabeach · 14/02/2026 19:47

@pepperminticecream a budget of £1,000 and wanting it to be striking, seems to say I want to be noticed. I’m not saying OP should be spending £10 from eBay, but it seems a very high budget for stepmother to spend. But then maybe I move in different circles because I didn’t spend that on my wedding dress!

Cappie73 · 14/02/2026 19:53

MotheringHeightz · 13/02/2026 22:22

rosiebr · 14/02/2026 08:14

I’m also 40 and I think this one is perfect for what you described OP

Me too!

Moveoverdarlin · 14/02/2026 21:22

The OP is a size 10 and 40 and can spend a grand on a dress. Jesus, Hobbs, Phase Eight and LK Bennett are what I would recommend to 80 year olds. John Charles is also very very traditional for MOB outfits.

Shes the same age and shape as Lady Gaga, not Nora Batty.

Well to my eyes Solace London is awful, cliché outdated "glam" and not right for a wedding.

Tbf Remus generally isn't rude.

Depends on whether you view the £1000 as a one off spend on a one off MOB outfit which can't be worn again or a £1000 spend on a great dress/suit/whatever that you'll wear on every possible occasion.

I have several dresses which were over £1,000 and I get a lot of wear out of them. I've never bought anything with the intention of only wearing it once or anything, including the dress I got married in that couldn't be worn multiple times.

People have different budgets for clothing though. I wouldn’t hesitate to spend 1k on a nice dress for an important event but then I do tend to spend more on a single clothing item (but shop less often) and it’s not because I’m trying to outshine other people. As women we should be building each other up and be supportive of each other when we look our best, instead of seeing it as a slight to other women.
