Hype - bit of a scam?

I recently bought two lucky dips of the same age range from hype and received two identical sets of items. I emailed asking about returns and they replied saying no. My older son as feeling left out of the “lucky dips” excitement so when it came in stock in his age range I stupidly bought a ten piece lucky dip - it consisted of some pretty heinous printed t-shirts which I expected but also a lunch box, draw string bag and pencil case! I really feel like I’ve been scammed, by a well known brand. Their customer service has been frankly rude and I’m sworn off them eternally.
Has anyone had a good experience with this? Or is it a scam? I don’t understand how they can get away with not accepting returns.

I've never thought it was worth taking the chance when my ds was into hype the website was full of pretty garish stuff I knew he would probably get and then wouldn't wear.
Could you put them on vinted?

Not sure I understand - you paid for 10 random items (presumably the ones that aren't that popular) and that's what you got? Or you didn't?

What's the scam? Obviously they're not going to let customers buy blind and keep returning until they get what they want?!

Just googled and it says this on the product description:

The items you will receive will be chosen at random from our exciting product categories including t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, backpacks, shorts, joggers, lunch bags, accessories and swimwear. All you need to do is simply select the size you need and leave the rest to us!

Please note that these items will be selected at random from current and past seasons. Samples, guest brands and unpacked products may occasionally be used.

The packaging displayed in the product image is for illustration purposes only. Goods will be packed and delivered in our standard packaging.

*We're afraid that due to the nature of the Lucky Dip we are unable to swap individual items that are received, nor are Lucky Dip returnable unless faulty, please note we will only issue store credit.

Lucky Dip are random products and as such there is a chance of disappointment with what you receive but this is reflected in the price, We cannot guarantee specific item categories, colours or fits.

I ordered 20 items total (glutton for punishment)
2 lots of 5 item lucky dips in the same age bracket, the 2 lots were identical items so I don’t think that qualifies as a lucky dip.
Then the 10 item lucky dip had very similar items as well as a pencil case, draw string bag and lunch box. I’ve ended up with 3 of the same lunch box as it was in all sets.
I did put the polyester t shirts on Vinted as knew my son was unlikely to reach for them.

I hate this type of buying. Spending money on random shite without even knowing what you're getting. Why not just spend the money on one decent item that you/the kids really want?

NewGoldFox · 10/02/2026 22:27

I thought it would be a cheaper and fun way to bulk out their summer wardrobes. I won’t be doing it ever again, just was wondering if anyone was pleased with their lucky dips.

Sell it on vinted?

ItsPoochie · 10/02/2026 22:32

It’s just a gamble then. It seems obvious that they are calling it an exciting name but what it actually is is a way to get rid of things they can’t sell.

I don’t think you can complain that you have duplicates. If anything, that is proof that it is random rather than it isn’t random.
