Bootleg trousers - yay or nay if the widelegged look isn't for you?

I don't really follow fashion as I wear what suits me - I've been wearing skinny jeans/slim straight trousers for ages, despite loving flares all through the 90s and early 2000s and never imagining the hold skinnies would take!

I wanted to try some wider-legged trousers as I have some flat Chelsea boots I want to wear to work, and my straight trousers just don't work with them. However these just make me look like a toddler or like I'm waddling around - I have quite slim legs and don't like this baggy look on me.

I found some old bootcut jeans and they seemed like what I was looking for - straight on the thigh and slightly flared at the bottom, so look flared with jeans or slightly straighter with boots. This made me think my ideal work trousers might be bootcut - but I've tried some black ones and although in theory they're what I thought I was looking for, I can't shake the feeling that I've stepped straight back to the 00ies and I look really naff and dated because of it.

Do bootleg trousers work, style-wise? Do they only work with heels?

I quite like bootleg but everyone will come on here and tell you that you must wear only wide leg trousers despite them all being so very hideous. Grin

luckylavender · 07/02/2026 19:14

I think people should wear what suits them.

Littlethatchedcottage · 07/02/2026 19:18

I like these, I’ve noticed that most of the models are shown wearing heels with most jeans, not a popular opinion on here but bootlegs do look better with a heel, they just wouldn’t look as good if the model was wearing lofas or whatever.

I’m the same as you OP and have made the transition to bootcut jeans. I can’t even look at my skinny jeans anymore. The bootcut is my happy place between skinny and wide leg, and I wear them with trainers and Chelsea boots.

DramaAlpaca · 07/02/2026 19:23

I like bootcuts. They make my legs look longer and I like the shape. Like a poster above, I wear them with trainers or with flat boots; I don't tend to wear heels.

StylishAndBeautiful · 07/02/2026 20:21

I still have my Gap Long&Lean jeans and I'd wear them with heels.

Teaforthetotal · 07/02/2026 20:24

I like them too (and I really did back in the day!). I'm quite petite and apple shaped and they definitely look flattering worn with boots with a heel. I think they suit everyone to be honest.

PenelopeAsks · 07/02/2026 20:24

I like skinny bootcut. I think they are more flattering than wide leg.

ForPinkDuck · 07/02/2026 20:27

Im an apple shape. I recently bought some boot legs from next. Flattering,

Nitgel · 07/02/2026 20:32

I love them. Marks and Spencer Ava jeans are good

TheChosenTwo · 07/02/2026 20:35

I love a wide leg, don’t mind a straight leg and really dislike bootcut on me, I’ve got slim legs and they just give me a clown like appearance for some reason!
it’s fine, not everything will appeal to everyone so it’s good that there’s a choice.

Teaforthetotal · 07/02/2026 20:43

Sorry when I re-read your post I realised it was more specific to work. If I saw someone wearing black boot cut trousers at work, I would think it was a a smart and classic look rather than thinking 2000's.If I didn't already have plenty of work trousers and a more dressed down dress code in my office I'd be looking to buy myself some.

B0D · 07/02/2026 20:44

Wear what you like and what suits you I’d say!
I have jeans in many styles and shapes (but I don’t much like high waisted) and could wear skinny , kick flare/bootcut and men’s straight jeans all in one week!

Bruisername · 07/02/2026 20:49

I’ve been wearing Boden’s black bootcut trousers to work for years - some long with a heel and some regular length with a flat shoe. They seem to have discontinued them at the minute 😬

I also wear bootcut jeans and tbh I don’t care what’s in fashion - I think those barrel leg trousers look terrible on pretty much everyone but if they are happy to wear them then so be it. I don’t care that they’re probably looking at me wondering which decade I stepped out from!!

would add that my 15yo dd who is very fashion forward recently bought herself some bootcut jeans which she assures me are completely different to my bootcut jeans…

watchingthishtread · 07/02/2026 20:59

I like bootcut. I hadn't worn them in decades but I've bought some recently.

I think that both wide leg and bootcut ideally need a pointier toed shoe. Flat chelsea boots might not work great with either.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 07/02/2026 21:01

Bootcuts are back. The teenage girls I work with have started wearing them.

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 07/02/2026 21:04

I like bootleg, they’re cool. Lots of people in them at my uni.

2chocolateoranges · 07/02/2026 21:13

I wanted wide legged jeans but they do nothing for me, so I’ve bit the bullet and purchased 2 pairs of bootcut jeans and I love them on. I don’t follow fashions and don’t care what anyone else wears or thinks. I feel good wearing bootcut jeans.

Floisme · 07/02/2026 21:26

I enjoy fashion and I wear both.

EconomyClassRockstar · 07/02/2026 21:44

I have a Paige pair of bootcuts that I LOVE. Very dark blue and slim on the thighs. Make my legs look really long even though they're really, really not! I wear them with cowboy boots (my personal fave with them), heels or my Samba's. They don't look good with chunkier sneakers, that's for sure.
