Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

You'd also put them on back to front all the time, as this is where those pockets should be. Especially when you're drunk ...

anonymous0810 · 23/02/2026 18:51

Excellent work folks! I’m going rapidly off them. I do like her stuff though - I’ll have to stop looking at the website.

I urgently and desperately want a woollen kilt, specifically this one... https://www.plumo.com/products/boyd-kilt?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22534385461&gbraid=0AAAAADltM07vOof40ZOTUe6FORGveroxs&gclid=CjwKCAiA2PrMBhA4EiwAwpHyC1dVKW1alGgUi6bFw16sVfeSrT_GP0ei1jzRhCWFurQ3E3Rj01U1bhoCc8AQAvD_BwE
...though I might be happy with something similar for half the price from, for example, Celtic & Co.
I love it so much, already have a few perfect jumpers to wear with it, but if I buy it I'll have no fun money left for the next month.
Can anyone put me off it - please?

Its a lovely kilt but realistically how much wear are you going to get out of it, as it is already getting milder. Maybe wait until September and think about it then.

StylishAndBeautiful · 25/02/2026 09:24

@ThingsBeingVarious , it looks like a school skirt from the 1950s. If you want a kilt get a tartan one.

BIossomtoes · 25/02/2026 09:42

It’s lovely but it’s completely the wrong time of the year to buy something you’ll have to put away for seven or eight months almost as soon as you get it. Save up for it or an equally nice equivalent and buy it in the autumn.

ThingsBeingVarious · 25/02/2026 10:14

Saved by Spring! Thank you, I do (just about) feel able to delay buying the woollen kilt until September and perhaps could even squirrel a few tenners away each month so it doesn't leave me skint for the month when I buy it. Will just gaze longingly at all the photos for now and imagine the tops I'll wear with it.

TragicMuse · 25/02/2026 11:11

I’d have said the same - no point buying a wintery thing now!

Also, you might find one on Vinted…

Edwardbear1 · 25/02/2026 11:40

The kilt is lovely but reminds me of something Miss Trunchball would wear

I like it and I have something similar (a vintage Celine skirt found on vinted, grey wool, no straps). For me it’s a very versatile and universal garment BUT:

  • I am currently looking at 16 tons of snow through my window, if you don’t, no point buying an autumn/winter skirt
  • The leather straps are a no from me. These are fashionable now but can get out of style next year. I wouldn’t buy this skirt because it can look dated quickly.

It's a kilt and kilts don't really date but Claudia W and Traitors have made kilts more popular, and the grey kilt is not really Claudia's style. It's basically a long pleated grey skirt.

SpiralSister · 25/02/2026 14:04

I think this has come up before, but Tu have a cracking black maxi length kilt for £25. Obviously not wool, but fantastic for the money. Got mine last autumn and wore the hell out of it. They restocked recently.

It might scratch the itch, although the spring thing is a good point..

I’m no expert in kilts but my guess is they are not something that is normally stocked in every other shop or seen on the streets after the current hype is over? I should have said that it was going to look out of place rather than dated.

It's £17.50. It's not in the same league as the Plumo one, but it's not bad.
It still looks like a school skirt though.

BIossomtoes · 25/02/2026 15:10

It’s sold out.

ThingsBeingVarious · 25/02/2026 18:43

I do have a couple more traditional kilts, heavy tartan and knee length. They are too big for me now as I've lost 3st. The Plumo one appeals mostly because it's worsted, so will be lighter, and it's plain. I love Plumo quality and tailoring so the Tu one doesn't appeal at all. In fact I don't think there can be any substitute, it's this one or none. So it's none (for now). I didn't buy those Cromer pants, nor the merino sweatshirt - I still think about them though.

The pants are still on there.

ThingsBeingVarious · 25/02/2026 19:14

@StylishAndBeautiful I know - and I'm still not buying them!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/02/2026 19:36

I am going to slide onto this thread as it is now Officially 100 Days till my Significant Birthday .

I need to get myself a Princessing List in my phone ( or paper , would work better )

I bought a really nice M&S top and got 20% off it . But in the new M&S in Oxford street I could find nothing /nil/nought I wanted !
They de-influenced me by doing that clothes in groups thing "so this shirts and these trousers go with this coat" .
I want Here's all the black trousers and here's all the work trousers . Here's leggings and jeggings not having to go from rail to rail.

I spent nothing on me (top was ordered last week) . My legs are giving me cramps because I walked a fair bit . I can call that exercise .

You cannot de-influence my from Rituals products but I'll wait for a special offer

notnorman · 25/02/2026 20:53

Why are the legs different lengths? Send me the money, I’m sure I can knock something up equally ridiculous on my sewing machine!

DeathBanana · 25/02/2026 21:14

I have bought these loafers from M&S. Do I keep them? I like them. I keep seeing influencers looking good in similar. I’ve got to go back to the office a day a week for the first time in a long time but don’t technically need them

i think my hesitation is around them being brown. I tried the black leather ones and thought I preferred these. Can I wear brown shoes with navy trews? Isn’t there a thing about that combination? I can’t remember what it was but I feel it may signify….something

Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things
ThingsBeingVarious · 25/02/2026 21:36

@DeathBanana I think you posted a pic of my grandad's slippers by mistake.

BIossomtoes · 25/02/2026 21:40

There are far, far nicer loafers available.

DeathBanana · 25/02/2026 22:57

Oh Christ. They’re moccasins aren’t they?!? That’s why I like them, they’ve given me subconscious nostalgia.

I do like them though

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/02/2026 07:43

I see loads of people with navy trousers/brown shoes when I'm on the train and I'm judging watching people .

Personally I think it's nicer navy/brown over navy/black though I do wear both.

Those loafers look nice now but they'll go all baggy over time , especially suede so your poor little feet will go slop slop slop in them .

HTH Wink
