Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

Klass!

LongGinShortTonic · 19/02/2026 19:44

In my defence, I KNOW that😁

StylishAndBeautiful · 19/02/2026 20:22

Not only is it klass it's also 'stunning'. My mind is blown!

LongGinShortTonic · 19/02/2026 20:52

I have loads of naice jewellry. But for some reason I am inexplicably drawn to this!!

StylishAndBeautiful · 19/02/2026 20:56

Gold doesn't suit you. Put it on a mood board or something instead.

Placestogo · 20/02/2026 05:17

LongGinShortTonic · 19/02/2026 19:36

I can’t tell you how much I love the Catherine de Crecour clover jewellery, I’ve no hope of affording it.

but this Kloudy version - the bracelet and earrings - in the pink - oh, I want it! https://kloudyjewelry.com/collections/bestsellers?tw_source=google&tw_adid=738615187347&tw_campaign=21928411135&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21928411135&gbraid=0AAAAACwtJvf4blwA_zhUsgfTlf7jPYh0N&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI96n3kaTmkgMVr4pQBh0KfwTSEAAYASAEEgKmzvD_BwE

talk me out of it. I don’t even wear bracelets very often. They annoy me. Or gold. It doesn’t suit me.

The celine clover bracelet?? Really? I would be worried the clovers feel a bit clunky and annoying around my wrist. Also not sure it will stack well with other bracelets… are you irish? Why the clovers? Buy yourself something nicer

Tooearlyfortea · 20/02/2026 09:42

Are you thinking of shamrock @Placestogo? Clover has no association with Ireland.

RobinTheCavewoman · 20/02/2026 10:30

Talk me out of a make up splurge - particularly Trinny eye pots and Clinique black honey lipstick and brown mascara!

StylishAndBeautiful · 20/02/2026 10:38

@RobinTheCavewoman , I'm in the middle of a make-up decluttering session.
The unopened stuff would probably outlive me.
There's about 5 bags for life of the stuff if I include the empty, almost empty and the might come in useful stuff.

The Black Honey almost lipstick is lovely but last about 5 minutes on me and Clinique mascara smells funny after a few weeks.

No idea about the Trinny stuff but she's had loads of 'work' done.

Pop round to mine and sift through my unopened stash instead. Smile
It truly is shocking.

Ah my mistake!!!

Whowhatwerewolf · 20/02/2026 20:54

Please talk me out of this?

I wouldn't buy it now but if I put aside £100 per month I could get it just in time for next winter. Would it be really warm and stylish? Or a bit too wannabe WAG?

You'll be nice and warm in it on cold dry winter days.
You'll not wear it any other time but seeing as we've had no cold dry winter days for a few years it will look really nice in your wardrobe.
When you sell it on vinted in about 6 years having not worn it, you'll be thrilled to bits with the £20 you got for it.

The model is 5'10" and probably a size 8. On me, it'd look like I was a chubby little bag lady.

So true. I can’t remember when we last had a proper winter.

Halfhardy · 20/02/2026 22:33

And if we did get a cold, dry winter day it would be accompanied by a fierce easterly wind. That coat only has hooks to fasten it. The fierce easterly wind will whistle between the hooks fastening your stylish but impractical coat and freeze your innards!

Mounjaroday · 20/02/2026 23:22

Jesus Christ, that’s amazing .. but very “in fashion”… you’ll be able to wear it this year only before realising it was of the moment, so then will need to retire it for 30 years before it swings round again.

Whowhatwerewolf · 21/02/2026 11:46

Thank you all, that has helped a lot. @StylishAndBeautiful you've painted a vivid picture of what I'm sure would end up happening. @Mounjaroday thanks for acknowledging it's amazing 😍 I didn't actually realise it's in fashion. Sounds like it will be better admired from afar.

Thanks. I'm trying to not buy a pair of shoes right now. They are almost identical to a pair I already own and have never worn.Smile

Whowhatwerewolf · 21/02/2026 12:08

That's something that could easily happen to me, too. And speaking of shoes....please can someone help with these also?

My obsession with Celtic and Co continues, and I still have that £20 off voucher.

Tassel Loafers

OP posts:
StylishAndBeautiful · 21/02/2026 12:17

Loafers rarely fit properly - either too tight at the front or they rub the heels. I don't like the tan colour or the navy finish.
On the plus side they are leather lined but they're still over £100 with the voucher.
I don't like loafers and those look a bit like ones you'd get in a sale.

BIossomtoes · 21/02/2026 12:27

It’s easy to see why they’re in the sale @Whowhatwerewolf. And isn’t your voucher only valid for full price purchases?

ETA Sorry, I’m wrong, they are full price, I bet they get heavily reduced in future.

TragicMuse · 21/02/2026 12:32

I don’t like loafers at the best of times! They just make me think of middle-aged men in slacks. Rocking a combover. Trying to keep up with younger people and looking just a bit tragic. Someone like Brian Aldridge in The Archers. Or Mike Baldwin in Coronation St.

Or tv antique dealers in coloured trousers, making up some entirely spurious provenance for a piece of tat. Pronouncing provenance in a ridiculous way. Most of Antiques Roadtrip really (my cultural references may need some work!).

TealReader · 21/02/2026 12:33

Do you need shoes? That’s the first question.

I love chunky loafers and wear them all the time but they are currently not on trend, more slimline styles are in. If that bothers you they wouldn’t be a good buy. I don’t personally like tassels on my shoes and I think they are more prone to being damaged.

Whowhatwerewolf · 21/02/2026 12:47

You lot are amazing - you've saved me once again. It was the comb-over and the fact they probably won't fit well, and the fact they look like they should be on sale and the dirty tassels that did it plus I have to admit I don't need shoes (I have Mary Janes in a similar colour that will fulfill the same function more comfortably). Thank you so much.
