Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things | Mumsnet

@ItsNotYou852 and @SecretSquirrelLoo I know 🙈 to be fair it is just the pattern (like a fingerprint) not the nostrils and everything. Now that would be fugly!

Why not get some silver clay and take an impression yourself? I think you have to blowtorch it to make it go silver it even if you have to buy the clay and the blow torch it will still be cheaper!
Or get your dog to step in some paint and just have a framed paw print.

Thanks Inkymoose - that is very helpful! 😀 Wish this thread could run indefinitely as I could probably buy a new car with all the money I would save.

I’ll keep them going as long as people find them useful. They’ll probably slow down over time and just sit there as a resource, which is fine. No grand plan — they seem to be doing their job.

@RodgerReading Yet another reason to never buy anything from Boden. What a horrible man he must be.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/02/2026 13:45

According to Wikipedia, Johnny’s personal wealth was £300000000 in 2014. He doesn’t need any more money from women hoping that one of his frocks won’t look like a dish rag after a couple of washes.

Nowaynowayhose · 02/02/2026 21:56

@TheChosenTwo you’ve persuaded me! It’s the khaki green Power leggings that I’ve got my eye on. I’m getting them now! Not keen on the jazzy ones. I’ve just seen that they accept Blue Light discount too, so that’s 20% off.

Hooray!!!! Now I must avoid this thread before @Whowhatwerewolf comes and raps me on the knuckles for persuading a purchase 😂😂

@Whowhatwerewolf I must be an unlucky one, I’ve tried so many other leggings brands and have constantly had issues with needing to hoik up waistbands constantly or realising they aren’t squat proof a bit too late 😭 I’ve wasted so much money when the SB’s that I avoided for so long have just totally worked for me from the get go. I do reformer Pilates and because it’s not as high intensity as gym stuff I sometimes wear some Lulu ones that are super soft and they’re fine for that.

This is a great idea! I had never heard of silver clay. There is even a gold equivalent.

Whereas I'll wear any old leggings and they're fine. I guess we're all built differently - maybe my hips are quite wide so they hold them up? Anyway, enjoy your leggings @Nowaynowayhose We're still allowed to have nice things after all, as long as we really actually want and will use them. But you know yourself @TheChosenTwo - into the naughty corner you go 😄

Sweaty Betty leggings? Are they really worth £88? I like the wide colour options and I see loads wearing them in my gym classes. But are they worth it?

No. They used to be great but quality is nowhere near as good now. Fabric is very plasticky and only having one side pocket is very annoying. I won’t say who I’ve defected to as it’s more expensive than SB and we’re de-influencing.

Whowhatwerewolf · 03/02/2026 14:34

@FourBlackCats - top of the class for not suggesting an alternative (though I bet you get some DMs). I have noticed the fashionable cool crowd in my pilates class has switched from SB to a couple of other brands of leggings.

Wonder if the remit of this thread could include ‘experiences’. Prob too much of a derail I know. But I have just spent £££ and booked four west end shows between now and Jan 27 and am looking at more😳

FourBlackCats · 03/02/2026 14:42

Another SB power legging bad point - the zippy back pocket can be painful if you attempt to do yoga/Pilates in them and have to go horizontal on a mat.

I think the quality of Sweaty Betty clothing has dropped a lot since the company was sold a year or so ago. Materials are much thinner. At the same time, they’ve widened the range of clothing ( lots of “leisure” type stuff rather than fitness stuff). Get along to T K Maxx - usually masses of SB leggings

KhakiAnt · 03/02/2026 14:49

Birkenstock Boston clogs? I’m so close to buying some. Looks so comfy and easy to pop on in the spring / summer!

Please tell me that I don’t want or need this faux leather jacket. The style is absolutely me. It’s too expensive for faux leather, and I’ve got at least 15 jackets already. But this is not enough to put me off.

Ah, I remember you from the hit movie Matrix

Yes, not sure when I’d ever use that pocket. They’re being delivered tomorrow so I’ll see!

I got some and haven’t worn them that much. I find them awkward to drive in and they’re suede which isn’t the most practical. I’m into proper sandals as soon as possible, so I find the ‘clog window of opportunity’ small.

Thanks, I’ll definitely check out TKMaxx for more, if I like them. They’re being delivered tomorrow.

I do want them and will use them. My old adidas leggings have definitely seen better days. I’ve increased my classes at the gym and having nice gym wear definitely helps me keep motivated to go. Shallow but true!

No, No, No. Repeat after me, 'I must not buy ye olde clogs.' People will either think you are on your way to take part in a historical re-enactment or, if you buy the suede ones, will worry that you are losing your marbles and have the left the house in your slippers. It's a very, very bad idea.

pippy1958 · 03/02/2026 15:38

Those Cromer pants are so simple and don't appear to have any particularly inspiring design features, etc, so I would say they are way overpriced for what they are, even with all the reductions. The Dilling sweatshirt on the other hand, go for it!

exse24Londoner · 03/02/2026 16:21

my turn....... either my hair is difficult to manage or I am simply hopeless but either way, think that a dyson airwrap is the answer to all my styling problems.

Is it??????

Hehe I’ve got the furry suede ones for slippers and I’ve found myself at work in them by mistake! 🫣

I have these too and it's NEVER the right weather for them. In the summer, you want something more open toe and breathable, and if it's cooler and raining the rain ruins the suede. Plus my cat is obsessed with them and keeps scratching them!

James Dyson is not only a Brexit twat, but also a hypocrite. Don’t give him any of your money.
