De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Sorry, just seen your update

Only 28% wool. At 70% I’d have snapped it up!

Don't think she even wears a cape, but first image I thought of was Vera.

Nothing wrong with Vera if it's the look you're going for.

I don’t know who Vera is.

Now some people like their very vivid magnesium dreams. But fucking hell they are exhausting. And never sodding ending.

All sounds very Brandon Sanderson Mistborn metal magic!

Ah, clever - I've just seen that they have cunningly put the word "wool" next to the 70%!
You're right! Mostly not wool.

I don’t know who Vera is.

Vera Duckworth on Coronation Street. Long suffering wife of Jack.

I think the pp meant the detective played by Brenda Bethyn.

Help!!! I really want to buy Shiseido or Tweezerman eyelash curlers

Where did you find this picture of me on my recent beach holiday? I thought I’d managed to avoid the paparazzi.

Reminds me of a lampshade my nan had on a large standard lamp. Didn't really need the light on because the shade was luminous enough without it.

No, you really don't. I got a good pair in TKMaxx for £2. They do the job very well. Similarly ones from Superdrug.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie are you Claudia Winkleman? Only Claudia can truly pull off a cape coat, whilst everyone else looks merely try hard. Pretty sure that’s enshrined in law somewhere.

I sent my Shiseido curlers back. I spent ages researching the best curlers for short lashes and they kept being recommended. However, they were rubbish. The didn't fit my eye shape (& I'm pretty sure I have a regular eye shape) & they just bent my lashes at a funny angle.

I'm sorry but that is a very expensive way of looking like you've got your skirt caught up in your knickers.

I was once chased down the road by a woman who thought I’d got my skirt caught in my knickers, when I was wearing Westwood.

Have you got a link for the lip oil. I want to buy that now.. Clearly I need this thread.

I get really dry lips in winter and the best thing I have found to do, better than any lip oil and definitely lip balm, is to use my face cream on my lips before bed. Sometimes I'll put somethig sealing on top that I already have (CeraVe Advanced Repair appointment in my case). A face cream with ceramides will do the trick. If I've run out I use avocado oil from the kitchen cupboard.

Try what you've already got first, even if it's a product you use slightly different. We often don't need very specialised products

Yes, please can someone talk me out of buying this blouse? I’ve managed to kick my wine habit. Now I need to tackle my shopping habit.

Edited

Is your bra size any larger than AA? Because this 'blouse' doesn't have side darts. And it doesn't fit across the shoulders. On women who are not model-thin, these shapeless blouses just add two stone to you, make your shoulders look meaty and your waist as wide as your hips. Avoid.

I’m going to be in a sling for a while and I’m convincing myself that I need a cape coat. Who’d like to talk me out of even looking?

Not me, I absolutely love a cape coat 😍

Looks like the dolly on the top of the loo roll got a 70s makeover.

TrickyD · 31/01/2026 16:47

That Vivienne Westwood tartan skirt looks like something rustled up by a particularly unskilled competitor on Sewing Bee.
