De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Yes, please can someone talk me out of buying this blouse? I’ve managed to kick my wine habit. Now I need to tackle my shopping habit.

M&S did something similar that was a lot cheaper a couple of years ago. They do linen (if you like ironing) and you can wait until you have a Sparks offer on tops to get a reduction if you really need a new blouse. Another suggestion is to go through your wardrobe and see what you have in there that you haven't worn lately. Do you already have something similar that you could wear instead?

I agree with you about the lip oil; it is the best. Could you request the varnish as a birthday present if someone asks you what you want? Or could you buy it from a shop where you have points or a discount?

Have you got a link for the lip oil. I want to buy that now.. Clearly I need this thread.

Please someone talk me out of this. Since watching the traitors I want a chunky knit cardigan!
https://hopemacaulay.com/collections/cardigans/products/nova-colossal-knit-cardigan

There are some Traitors threads where these cardigans are discussed. In short, they are very "Marmite," and I certainly would not be spending much on them if I even liked them as I doubt it will be a look that lasts. To begin with they don't look all that comfortable - extremely bulky. They look like the sort of thing I can't wait to fling off when I come in the door.

I always think with clothes it is quite useful to do a "WTF was I thinking?" test. If you can imagine looking back in ten years and asking that, I'd give it a second thought. Fashion can make fools of many of us.

Hi. Please Please talk me out of buying this gorgeous jumper! I have 30 jumpers and cc debt....but it's so lovely 😍

Have a look at your 30 existing jumpers. If you wore them all once in the coming weeks you would find that the winter is over and we've moved into Spring with no need for a jumper. Promise yourself you won't look at jumpers again until black Friday deals are out at the end of the year.

I saw something similar in Next for a lot less money.

I can’t, I have it and love it and it’s the only one I use - like a French manicure but nice!

I keep wanting to buy the things in this thread... so I obviously need this thread.
FYI.. that varnish is reduced in Boots atm

We've got building work going on and my useless useless stick dyson is rubbish. And only does about three stairs at a time.. I thiink all the dust etc will finish it off.

Thinking of getting a Henry - any objections?

ps. can anyone stop me from buying that Seaweed Shampoo? I've got very fine hair and I don't believe it grows back just because of shampoo- but still.

Thanks. I might need to look at sprays. I am a bit sceptical about how much you would absorb from a spray though.

Cant talk you out of using magnesium oil spray unless you enjoy sleeplessness and leg cramps - it cured me of both these things oveŕnight and I am eternally grateful!

I see it's called "Corriedale". Is that a current joke!
It certainly looks cosy, and it's wool but it's pricey. Could you get it under a coat?

Great thread.

Kiwi &Co do the dupes - hand knitted in acrylic for £60-£70. That scratched my itch!

SpiralSister · 29/01/2026 14:23

Oh and you can only get it under an enormously sleeved coat, so won’t be much use until spring..

I bought something in that vein. My bloke said it had got dotty old lady written all over it. Needless to say it went straight back.

If you've ever knitted anything you'll know there is very little skill evident in that piece. And it looks like it would constantly be in the way and get snagged on door handles and things. Plus it's very much of a moment (season 4 UK traitors) and will date quickly.

Didn’t know Tom Daley was on crack cocaine. It’s hideous and expensive and you won’t get it for weeks, by which time it’ll be too warm and you can buy something much nicer.

It's a good company but that's a particularly flattering photo of the cardigan. Have a look at the photos of the Truffle version, you can see the clunkiness and the stretching between buttonholes a bit more clearly.

I have a cardigan from here. My partner purchased it as a gift for me in October 2022 and I have worn it around 5 times. It looks like it has been worn 500 times as the wool is sort of shedding/pulling. Also the cut is not that flattering, it feels quite suffocating on, and it takes up way too much room in my wardrobe. Honestly I need to get rid of it! Wouldn't recommend although I was in love with it at the time!

I want a Dyson airwrap! Tell me it’s a waste of money, and it isn’t as good as everyone makes out!!

I have the dup of the Dyson called the Lilly Styler I was completly influenced but it is fantastic and only a quarter of the price. If that's any help

A jumbo/super chunky yarn like this has very little twist but a lot of surface, iykwim? If 100% wool it will be quickly affected by friction and will start pilling and bobbling. If there’s any plastic in the composition it will still bobble and additionally end up in your internal organs, mostly in the brain.

Another thing is that a chunky knit like that is very heavy, it has a tendency to collapse and lengthen under its own weight. So unless you’re very tall you might end up with a floor length coat rather than a cardigan.

It would inspire me to make my own vs spend that kind of money!

The bottom oven on my double oven has just died. I feel I need an expensive pyrolytic oven to replace it. Please tell my why not.

I have an AEG one, the pyrolytic thing is a gimmick and does nothing at all to the black crud.

On my to buy list right now is a Moka pot and also a wool duvet - fed up of getting sweaty from microfibre duvets!

please deinfluence me! I’m sick of the price of nespresso pods going up and up and up

I had a wool duvet once, it was unbelievably heavy and a huge struggle to change the bedding. And it smelled very faintly of sheep. I wouldn't.
