De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

I would really love to buy this Dior nail varnish (sorry for the long link, I don't know how you make them shorter!)

I only wear clear or tinted varnish, I tried it in the shop and it looked only the tiniest bit different to the one I was already wearing (maybe even too pink), I would never consider paying that much for a nail varnish except I've been suckered into people telling me how great it is.

I keep thinking it will be like the Dior Glow lip oil which is just better and more luxurious than any other lip oil I've used.

Someone please talk me down, I'm trying to pay off my debt for goodness sake I don't NEED it!

I can’t, I have it and love it and it’s the only one I use - like a French manicure but nice!

@Specialagentblond

so…what…she isn’t allowed to buy and wear any nice clothes?? And just go round looking and feeling like crap?? Nah. Another option is that she can teach her kids to respect her and her clothes.

she can teach her kids to respect her and her clothes.

I think wearing a skirt that looks like it got snagged climbing a fence or in one of those old fashioned spin dryers ( that were used after a mangle) is not really an ideal item to teach "respect for clothes."

VW can be great. but this end of her line is not looking all that classy.

PS the idea is to discourage purchase.🤐

I am desperately in love with this skirt! I have so many tops it would go with, cardigans and I love the fabric.

I've been trying to deinfluence myself - I'm trying to lose the last bit of baby weight (what size would I buy?) and also I don't know when I would wear it. But I NEED it!

Edit to add - I can justify it because I haven't brought any new clothes for almost 2 years, and I know I would it would be loved and looked after for years

Edited

Jesus wept woman! Don't do it...it's only cotton, not particularly unusual colours and does not look like it cost £10, let alone £550. Clothes are worth paying money for if they are beautifully tailored, lovely expensive fabric, etc, not checked cotton! If you have a tailor or dressmaker near you, I think you could easily get this made up in very similar fabric, or something similar readymade in somewhere like Cos, Reiss, or other upmarket retailer

Has this worked?

chipsticksmammy · 29/01/2026 12:22

Also, I am not being rude. You are getting my unfiltered thought on your item, I would never actually speak it out loud to your face. If I was a real friend and know you I would say this and help you choose something better.

I love VW, that skirt however is awful.

Same for Mulberry, I have many of their bags but the current bags are no longer made in England, the leather and hardware look different and the styles are quite dated.

Roka, again its a functional rucksack. Its not stylish in any way. Its not going to bring much to your life. Its also overpriced.

Fat face linen - washes terribly, ages you, so many better options out there.

Dyson? At least your arm strength will improve. Curls drop our of my hair before I have even finished. Only use the airwrap if you have the time to pin it and leave it in place for a long time.

Collagen, waste of money. Magnesium, same.

Pyro ovens, expensive and do make your food taste weird.

Pleaseee deinfluence me from a White Company dressing gown. I love this one and there is one in stock in my local store: www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Unisex-Organic-Cotton-Hooded-Ribbed-Hydrocotton-Robe/p/A16643?swatch=Blush

I don't hate this, but find that this sort of colour can very quickly get a bit dull and lose it's freshness.

AndrogynousElf · 29/01/2026 12:26

Snugglemonkey · 28/01/2026 21:37

Ok, I am being very tempted by wee sachets of a magnesium drink becsuse most adults are deficient in it and taking it will help me sleep better. Or it might be nonsense. Do I need to try these?

Matthew Walker, sleep expert, went on diary of a CEO and said it didn’t work, and that the studies were flawed. Also, if it did work, then everyone would take it and no one would have any sleep issues.

If you already have one a similar colour why are you wasting money buying the same thing

This jumper:
https://www.secretsales.com/df12448cdfed59-river-island-river-island-womens-jumper-nephthys-green-bow-christmas-colour-green/

It looks like the kind of cute vintage jumper that never actually comes in my size, but it's also made of that weird sort of fluffy compressed fabric that places like Shein use, is it likely to fall apart in the wash?

It’s quite Christmassy - would you wear it post Christmas. Do you have other clothing that goes with it? Is it worth it to wear it (potentially) just in December?

I love that card and would maybe buy it if it were hip length and I had a spare £150... But it's too short! It would look boxy on a normal human being.

Also, if you want a cardi that's warm and snuggly like that, you'd also want your hips and arse to be warm.

The size chart on the website gives the length, this might help your decision?

It's nice, but I have bought a lot of their dressing gowns over the years and they are water absorbent in the wash and take an age to dry. They also tend to get stiffer and sort of scratchier with age.

On the other hand, I bought a Marks and Spencer one for my mum to take into hospital (where I was worried it might get lost or similar) for a fraction of the price and ended up getting one myself. It was so deliciously soft and snuggly and they have had some great plain colours recently - even, I think some similar blush and putty ones.. Every time I put mine on, I was coveting hers until I got one and simply love it! It's like being hugged by a cloud, whereas my long and heavy ones feel like a burden to drag about.

I didn't get that colour, which is my next reason. I find that kind of pink can look soft and fresh when new, but quickly gets a sort of grubby undertone after washing. And as another pp said, that colour is far from slimming ...

It’s show over the top of gym wear because that’s how thin your clothes will need to be to make it sit right. The cut is very tight.

It's also very short, cannot find the measurements online but at least you can go to a M&S and they should have it in stock?

SlothSpiritAnimal · 29/01/2026 12:31

Viviennemary · 29/01/2026 11:58

It's quite cheap looking. Whats the point of buying someting expensive if everybody is going to think you bought it from Temu.

I don’t mind if people thought it was from Temu though - I actually do like it (it’s the little knight charm I like best!), but it’s not worth the money. If there was a cheap version I’d buy it, tacky or not. Also to add, I’m not encouraging Temu shopping, just saying that I don’t like it ‘because’ it’s Burberry, but I like it despite that IYSWIM.
I’m not getting it though - far too much money, and, as others have said it’s not actual gold. So this thread has worked!

Please talk me out of the stupid Roka lucky dip. I don’t need any more bags, I really don’t.

I did it last year out of pure fomo and got a black one which is tbf great. I’ve used it twice. Twice.

Ok please don’t hate me - it’s hideously expensive but I love this necklace so much, please talk me down!
https://uk.burberry.com/charm-necklace-p81169051

I think it might feel quite uncomfortable, as well as being eye-wateringly expensive. Not keen on the Burberry tag either, as looks a bit cheap, but I do like the robot charm! Can you try it on somewhere to get an idea of how it feels on? You might even be able to get a real gold necklace at that price!

I tried magnesium capsules. They were enormous and I couldnt swallow them so I tried opening them and mixing them with yoghurt. They tasted disgusting. And they didnt help me sleep.

I get mine from Poundland (if you can find a branch) and are not the size of torpedos and they work

Purplebunnie · 29/01/2026 12:46

@Goldpanther tartan skirts are very versatile but that one isn't. Anyway spring is not that far away so tartan will be out until next Autumn

no magnesium drinks or tablets have ever helped me sleep. You're correct most people are la.cking in magnesium but you can buy a massive tub of magnesium flakes on Amazon Stick some in your bath it helps you relax and it absorbs into your skin. you can also mix equal parts of the flakes with boiling water let it cool down put it in a spray bottle and spray on the bottom of your feet.

If you look at Fleece Hooded Dressing Gown, in M and S Women's online, you will find a few options. One I am sure comes in a putty pink colour, and another (maybe slightly different?) design in a baby pink.

They are about £30 and truly are blissfully soft and dry fast (in comparison!)
ETA I got the one that was £45 and slightly velour-y!
