I have lost 5 stone on Mounjaro and feel great. Sadly my hair has really suffered, I have lost so much volume and have actual bald patches along my parting. I am taking collagen and using shampoos and serums to prevent /improve hair loss, but nothing is working.
It looks awful and is depressing me.
I have looked at hair extensions and wondered if anyone had used them for the same problem? I wore a topper to my daughters wedding in October and it looked fantastic, but it is not something I would want to wear everyday.

You need to establish if it is the actual weight loss or if you have deficiency elsewhere. Talk to the gp and see if they can check your folate, b12 and iron level including stores.

if it is the weight loss then you have to wait for things to stabilise, massaging your scalp to promote blood flow and not doing too much that will stress it further are a good idea.

if you haven’t been a good multi vitamin is probably worth starting too.

Collagen, serums and shampoos won’t do anything. Hopefully it’s a temporary side effect of fast weight loss. You could try minoxidil if things don’t improve, but I think it takes a good six months to see improvements.

Pumpkin seed oil with Saw palmetto.
I've been taking it for about 3 months and my hair is growing back.

WildLeader · 27/01/2026 16:12

I’m only taking biotin and collagen supplements and I’m fairly sure that it’s not doing much for the hair, however my weightloss is slower now I’m at target and my roots are definitely thicker than the ends

it will grow back. It’s a result of the weight loss nothing to do with the medication

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 27/01/2026 17:56

well done on your weight loss but sadly this is common, both as a side effect of not enough nutrition and (I think...) now directly as a side effect of the medication. Look up Glowwa - it is a supplement specifically for hair growth. It takes a few months to work and I had baby hair starting to come in after 3 months. What turbocharged it however was adding iron in to the mix (yes I was anaemic), now I am sprouting baby hairs everywhere. I look a frizzy mess but it is worth it :-)

Tootyfilou · 27/01/2026 18:24

Thanks for all your replies. I was very anaemic a few years ago.. 5.7g/L ! I had a few blood transfusions and iron infusions and since then my heamoglobin has been normal but my ferritin remains low. I do take ferrous fumarate, but I think I probably need another iron infusion, but little chance of getting one unfortunately.
Do you think it is worth trying hair extensions?

try and get a blood test and check out Solgar Gentle Iron. Normal iron kills my stomach but this one is so much better.

Notmymarmosets · 27/01/2026 18:42

If they bald patches are at the parting, I can't see how extensions would help. Mine have always been attached further down the sides if you get what I mean. A topper as you say, would be great

autumn1610 · 27/01/2026 19:10

dont do hair extensions they add tension to your hair and can create bald patches. My friend suffers with thin hair and has extensions and now she’s in a cycle as it’s made her thin hair thinner

Leafywool · 28/01/2026 10:21

Extensions will make things worse I think.

I lost 50lbs over the past year and my hair thinned out a lot towards the end of the year. I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that I’ve got loads of new baby hairs growing at the front. It looks so ridiculous and fluffy but I am happy it’s growing!

How long ago did you stop losing weight? I think you need a period of time for everything to settle down.

It may be worth trying kerastase genesis serum, I saw it recommended on here when it was in a Black Friday deal, used it for 6 weeks and it made my hair much stronger
