Jumpers over shirt?

Basic Style question here! Love this look but my existing jumpers feel too thin for this look. Is that how its meant to look or should the jumpers be thicker? shirts from Zara.

@MsBubbles85 im sure i have that M&S one but i think my shirt is too big/bulky for it as in you can see it straining underneath or else the jumper is just too thin

House of Bruar Lambswool Crew Neck Jumper, Blue - House of Bruar
might work. You could also look at WOMEN'S JUMPERS & KNITWEAR - Community Clothing.
Are your shirts bulky or oversized?

FlowerFlour · 27/01/2026 17:17

Sometimes wearing a thin jumper over a shirt looks weird because you can see all the buttons etc.

I find it works better to put on the shirt, put a vest top over the shirt, then the jumper on top. It creates smoother lines. It's not really any more bulky, assuming you are also a millennial and usually need to wear an emotional support vest under all tops anyway.

You…. Are a genius!

thank you for the suggestion. And for seeing right through to my milennial soul! 🤣

Gowlett · 28/01/2026 06:44

Benetton. Most of my jumpers are from them.

Bottomofthedeepbluesea · 28/01/2026 06:50

i needed this thread! Can I hijack it and ask for links to shirts you’re wearing with these jumpers? M&S and Zara price ranges - not those where it’s £80 for one shirt.

I imagine this is part of the issue. Can you try a more slim fitting shirt under the jumper?

Also @FlowerFlour emotional support vest stopped me in my tracks! I’ve broken the habit to a large degree but didn’t realise it was a thing! (I’m a xennial)

MoreMaths · 28/01/2026 08:09

Emotional Support Vest! That’s me! 😂😂😂

I will always call it that now.

Fireplacewatcher · 28/01/2026 08:13

just google jumpers with collars.

SoScarletItWas · 28/01/2026 08:18

Try a fake collar. I like the look of a shirt under jumper but hate how the jumper then drags over the shirt. I like a smooth emotional support camisole under the jumper and the fake collar gives that little finishing touch.

Doesn’t work if you also like the look of the shirt hem sticking out under the jumper, of course, but I don’t.

SurferRona · 28/01/2026 09:15

Other thing is to wear sweater vests, you can get jumper or cardigan ones, can leave shirt untucked. Gives you more shirt for comfort but extra layer to break it up visually.
edit to finish my thought

eatreadsleeprepeat · 28/01/2026 09:21

If jumper layered over shirt is for the look then fake collars might work. If it is for the practical purpose of being able to take off a layer then neither fake collars or vest over shirt would work.
Shirts need to be soft, hate to say it but one time when all linen or cotton not so good. Jumper needs to be firmer knit and not at all clingy.

Firm Generation X here and I have to ask …

emotional support vest???

Newmeagain · 28/01/2026 09:26

I love this look but it is hard to pull off in practice for all the reasons described above.

Pedants corner is that way >>>

SydneyCarton · 28/01/2026 09:52

I am neither stylish nor beautiful but came on the thread to also recommend the Amazon fake shirt collars! I’m actually wearing one now with an M&S V-neck and a vest underneath, although as a late Gen Xer it’s less for emotional support and more about channelling my inner Granny Weatherwax.

Agree about needing a lighter softer shirt to look good for this. H&M used to do some polyester satin shirts which worked well, even thin jumpers just slid right over them.

OswaldCobblepot · 28/01/2026 09:57

On a related subject... how do people manage to pull off the tshirt under a jumper look? Like in the M&S picture above. It never seems to work for me. Whatever tshirt I try never seems to sit right, the neck is never the right shape/height.

I just found fake crew necks on that giant shopping site 😄, but you need high tight crew necks to poke out above the jumper neck, so either size down or the other thing which works for me is a body worn back to front. Love that flash of white at neck top, it really lifts a look.
