Brown leather bag rubbing onncoothes

A few years ago on holiday a brown leather bag i was wearing left a vertical mark across my white top. I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and bringing a new brown leather bag but I'd like to avoid the same happening and the stain never came out the top. Does anyone have any tried and tested ways to prevent this?

Had you applied mosquito repellent which contained DEET? The bag handle, coming into contact with DEET (which I have removes ordinary nail varnish and the dye in plastics), then repositions on or body as you move

Not that I can remember. But the same thing happened to my MIL in December where she definitely didn't have mosquito repellent. Coincidentally it happened to both of us in Barcelona! Just at very different times of the year!

*I have experienced

This happened to me last summer in Italy. Instead of a leather bag I took a man-made one as it better suited what I needed. I had black stains on a pale low-back linen dress which I noticed when my bag handle became sticky. Luckily they washed out.
