Please help me for my friends wedding (its a church do). I have no idea where to start looking as I live in jeans or uniform for work and rarely buy clothes for myself.

I am 38, 5'7, size 14, brown wavy long hair, decent tits, chest and waist area but have to hide hideous thighs and upper arms (also am starting to look veiny just below the backs of my knees)! nice!!

I always feel wrong at these sorts of things as I'm so out of my comfort zone.....am starting to wish I had said we couldn't go.....and do I have to wear a hat and end up with hat hair??

Please help me not to look and feel like a right tit.

Also, nowt too expensive as I doubt it'll get worn again too soon!

Thanks all you groovy stylish mumsnetters in anticipation.

This is quite pretty, but I'm never sure about black at weddings.

Your NewLook links won't open Jackie but have one near me so can nip in. DingDong that red Debenhams dress looks great too. Do you have to book for their personal shopper service or just turn up?

Thanks everyone so much, I am feeling inspired! I shall go to the ball!!

I think best to book the personal shopper. Though if you're around anyway, why not go in in person to do it, and they might be able to see you there and then. Best of luck.

Haven't looked at e-bay yet Cod, might be good for inspiration though.

Hmmn, not sure who I'd borrow off as all my friends are as bad as me....or did you mean one of those posh clothes loans shops?

Habbibu that dress is pretty with the sequins and whatnot but I've got a mental block where black's concerned for a summer wedding.

Thats nice Cod, that sort of shape would suit me I think. I wonder how much the Coast stuff goes for on there.......

turkey lurkey when is the wedding and where (ish) are you? the red one comes in chocolate too, if red is a bit full on for you!

hana · 13/06/2008 21:15

go to monsoon, they have gorgeous dresses and quite reasonable too

singyswife · 13/06/2008 21:17

You can dress up black by getting pink accessories. There was a girl/young lady at the wedding I was at recently and she had on a simple plain black straight dress (the type we all should have in our wardropes), she had ties a fuscha ribbon round the middle, got fuscha shoes, fuscha handbag and put her hair in a bun with a latge fuscha scrunchie and she was stunning. So simple yet so effective.

TurkeyLurkey · 13/06/2008 21:18

What no they won't point and stare if I'm in black? Are you sure?

Don't like the red M&S one..too short and a bit hookerish.

The Wedding is on the 9th August and I am in The Midlands.

iamdingdong · 13/06/2008 21:22

oh dear, I'm not in midlands - was going to suggest you could try a couple of mine on

AbingdonGirl · 13/06/2008 21:26

I would wear something like this with a pair of linen trousers and some strappy sandals. Stunning!

TurkeyLurkey · 13/06/2008 21:27

Oh thanks for your kindness Dingdong. Can't believe how people are willing to loan things to complete strangers on here!

I love you all!! mwah mwah xxxxxxx

Keep your eyes peeled for the Coast sale - lots of my purchases from there have been dramatic reductions.
