Should I keep the Brora tank?

I ordered a Brora cashmere tank in the sale. It's still £225 which I consider a pretty large sum for a single garment. The colour is amazing, I love the colour but I'm erring on the side of sending it back but then worry that I'll regret not keeping it?

It looks shit without anything underneath it (on me at least) and I had visions of wearing it over shirts. I don't currently have any shirts. The only thing I've got that I could wear under it are some long sleeved t-shirts.

Or I could order a few shirts to wear underneath it before I make a decision?

It's the ONLY item of clothing that I've bought this Winter, apart from a pair of loafers (from Russell and fecking Bromley). I have made a few things tho'

OMG. In short, is this an investment piece that will last forever, if I look after it, or is it too indulgent especially as I need to buy things to go with it (that I was going to buy anyway ...)

I think we need a pic op.

notacooldad · 24/01/2026 21:55

Im not a fan of long t- shirts or tank tops so on thst basis it would be a send it back from me.
Also you are saying you will have to buy shirts so that becomes another expense rather than the item completing what you already have.

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/01/2026 21:59

Wear it over long sleeved tee shirts, other long sleeved tops, etc. I don’t have many actual shirts either and wouldn’t buy any specially. Still think we need to see a pic, lol

LoveSandbanks · 24/01/2026 22:08

Fuck! A picture?

it looks less identifying but im still going to
delete it tomorrow!

currently braless because it’s way to late to put one back on

imagine it with a pair of navy merino wool flannel wide legs (made by me obvs)

I might not buy many clothes but I spend a fortune on fabric! 😳

I think I would send it back. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I’m not sure the fit/shape is quite right. I think a lower V would be a better style on you, especially if you’re wearing something underneath. For the money, I think you could definitely find something that you’re completely happy with.

RedRosie · 24/01/2026 22:21

I absolutely love Brora. And I love a tank top. And it's quite nice. But never, never buy Brora at this price. There will be another sale. That's so much money! I vote send it back, cross fingers, and wait for the next sale where it will go down again.

WhereAreWeNow · 24/01/2026 22:27

I would send back. I love Brora and it's a perfectly nice tank top but I was expecting it to be a beautiful fairisle or something. I think if you're unsure if/how/when you'd wear something and you're thinking you'll have to buy more new clothes in order to make it work, then it's better to return it and wait until you're sure.
Why not get a cheaper tank top on Vinted to work out how you feel about the style, whether you need a shirt etc? If you love it, then hold out for the next Brora sale.

Cazziebo · 24/01/2026 23:48

Agree with @Furlane. A deeper V would be better and at that price I’d want it to be perfect. Colour is lovely.

ibuprofenhead · 24/01/2026 23:52

I don’t like it. You need a deeper v neck

Yes, agree. Love the colour but the fit isn’t quite right for the price.

Send it back. I have a cashmere Brora buttoned Fairilse vest and a patterned Palava tank I wear over shirts and dresses but that's really boring.

leaflikebrew · 25/01/2026 06:30

I think that's a beautiful colour.

It sounds like you really want to keep it - in which case I would recommend keep it and enjoy wearing every time you do.

CeciliaMars · 25/01/2026 06:35

I’m sorry OP but it doesn’t flatter you. £225 is a crazy amount of money for one jumper in my opinion.

Floisme · 25/01/2026 06:55

I wear tank tops a lot and I’d pay that much - if I could afford it - for real, made-in-Scotland fair-isle, but I wouldn’t pay that for Brora - they’re not what they used to be.

PersephoneParlormaid · 25/01/2026 06:57

It’s very plain for that amount of money. I saw a lovely arran style one on here for that price, it was knitted by some form of women’s group.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 25/01/2026 07:18

OMG - as per the phoenix nights song "Send the buggers back"

You can do sooooo much better.
For that money it should fit well and look good.

It doesn't and its the tank, not you.
The proportions are weird and the v is too high.
The colour is nice but thats the best I can say for it.

BusterGonad · 25/01/2026 07:20

I don't think the fit is right and I don't see how a shirt would go under it. It does look a lot like the tank tops older gentlemen wear. The other one that's linked, is far more beautiful.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 25/01/2026 07:21

Soontobe60 · 24/01/2026 23:59

Sadly, it doesn’t look the same on you as on the model. She’s likely to be 5’ 10” and a size 8 with no bust.
This one, however, is stunning! (And is £120 cheaper)

LOVE this

BreakfastOfWaffles · 25/01/2026 07:30

I have a few "investment pieces" in my wardrobe. I think it's better to try the style out with cheaper versions before going for the expensive version. That's to say, an investment piece should never be something that you aren't certain fits with your style and other wardrobe items. It sounds like you need to do a bit more experimentation with how tanks fit into your style. On that basis, I would return this one.

Wickedlittledancer · 25/01/2026 07:31

I’d also send that back op, it’s doing nothing for you. I love a tank, me and em do fabulous ones, but that’s fairly basic, certainly doesn’t look the cost, and isn’t flattering either,

Meadowfinch · 25/01/2026 07:34

That's a huge amount for a plain tank. I was expecting a beautiful hand knit, multicoloured one until I saw the picture.

Personally, I'd send that back, or at least order a decent cotton shirt to go underneath it.

tsmainsqueeze · 25/01/2026 07:34

It doesn't look 'special' enough to me to justify all that money , you can get better I think.
Also agree with the v needing to be lower.

I think you need something less fitted, go a size or two up, it will look more stylish. Also go in Vinted, there are Brora and other premium knitwear vests you can pick up very often new with tags for around £50. Seriously no point buying new
